Gaining Massive Amount Of Weight Overnight!

PreOptMegs

I was wondering if anyone else GAINS weight after consumption of gluten. I just recently found out I was a celiac, so it has taken a while to get a grasp of all of the pitfalls, but if I eat gluten, I gain at least 5 pounds overnight and I become massively bloated and I feel awful. I know most celiacs lose weight, but I am just the opposite. I hope I am not the only one!!Open Original Shared Link

nope you aren't the only one. I gain massive amounts of weight INSTANTLY when I accidentally get glutened. But as long as I stay gluten free the weight just drops off. weird.

PreOptMegs Explorer

I will lose a lot of weight very quickly, until I get to a certain weight, then I am stuck, no matter how healthy I eat, or how few calories I take in...

ianm Apprentice

Another weight gainer here. Lots of bloating too.

Guest gfinnebraska

Me too... gain weight as soon as gluten hits my lips. We are the "other" type of celiacs. Not a fun group to be in, but oh well!! You are not alone... :D

Guest Eloisa

This is so true. When I've gotten exposed I'm bloated for days at a time maybe even a week and I feel so much pressure in my stomach. It does end up being about 5-10 pounds maybe even more, then it goes away. Try not to consume less than 1200 calories cause you'll shut your metabolishm down and your body will try to retain the fluid. Remember when the body feels attached or if you've exposed it, its common defense is to retain fluid to get it well or back to normal.

I'm a gainer too. I get really bloated and have lots of pressure in my tummy.

I gain weight with gluten. It is the main reason my regular doc told me I couldn't possibly have celiac. Biopsy proved otherwise to her!

cmom Contributor

Yeah, I am totally frustrated...as far as I know, I am totally gluten-free but keep gaining weight, even with exercise. My stomach is so distended all the time. It has gotten much worse the past year. I can't wait to get my clothes off some days just to feel comfortable! B)

Yep- Me too. At first, before I realized I had it, I had lost twenty pounds (not pretty) but now that I'm gluten-free I've gained about 15 back but when I get glutened now I gain weight. I think it's because I get bloated and constipated.

Guest Viola

Can I inject a little good news into this one? :P We can't do much about the bloating when accidently glutenized, but at least for women ... there is just a little good news. Most of women's slacks and some jeans now contain 2% spandex! Now that doesn't sound like much, but it does make life just a little more comforable for those of us that actually have to keep our clothes on when we are bloated

Guest nini

LOL! My favorite jeans actually have a bit of the spandex in it... They really do come in handy for those times when you feel so swollen and look 5 months pregnant when your not!

Oh and one time before my dx, I had a dr tell me that all my problems would be solved if I just lost some weight, and he put me on a very specific diet very high in fiber and WHOLE WHEAT!!!! I gained like 15 pounds in just a week... I went back and screamed at him. Demanded to see a different dr. in the practice. I couldn't understand why I couldn't lose weight when I ate so very little. Didn't realize that the foods I was eating for the nausea (saltines, pretzels, dry toast) were all the culprits!

Oh, I can soooo identify!!! I swear I gain two pants sizes when I've been glutened. I've been so bloated all week, and feel like I have PMS even tho I don't (retaining water, is my guess). Also, I can't seem to get rid of about 10 pounds that I'd like to see gone...baby fat from my last child who is now 2 1/2...no matter what I do I just won't go away. Several times I've managed to get rid of 5 pounds, only to gain it back over night! It's so frustrating. I guess technically I'm not overweight, but I am really not used to being the weight I am now. I was always so skinny until about 5 years ago when all this started. My dr. told me I couldn't have celiacs, too...since I hadn't lost 15 pounds spontaniously.

Guest nini

I just wanted to add that I too was very very skinny up until my early twenties, when I guess the damage caught up with me and my body started holding onto whatever it could (which was the fat) and even if I ate very little, I gained so much weight (for me) that I got really uncomfortable.

cdford Contributor

There are three sizes of clothes in my closet: gluten-free, just a little gluten, and gluten attack.

Hmm...wonder if that should go into the You might be a celiac if post?

Guest BERNESES

The idea about three sizes of clothes is great! I got glutened last week and I just lost 5 pounds today in 5 minutes (in the toilet. Ouch! :P ) At least my three favorite pairs of jeans are stretch. Oh the things we go through!

Guest Viola

Yup Donna, you should put that into the "You might be a Celiac" list  You can add a little Spandex to it too.

UIDancer Apprentice

This is wishful thinking, but does anyone have any tips on reducing the bloating? I recently got glutened AND I'm on my period this week, so it's a double whammy. I haven't been able to eat much which is helping but any suggestions are welcome!!

Guest nini

other than drinking a ton of water... nope.

Make sure if you are a "gainer" you have your thyroid checked regularly, not just once in awhile. Keep in mind the thyroid levels go up and down all day and it can be hard to pin an underactive one. My doctor said the "NEW CELIAC", which is the most commonly diagnosed as of current, is a weight gainer with associated thyroid deficits, and that is why people are having to live with misery, because doctors have always been educated to losing only. My dietician is great and she said to get used to eating gluten free first, and then slowly bring yourself to 1200 calories a day with exercise, she said avoid commercial weight loss systems like Weight Watchers because they don't have enough choices for us, and she said to write down what you eat. Also, if you bloat abdly, try a gas aide or if neccesary, a diuretic. Holding fluids is bad for your electrolytes, which keep the whole body system in check. Hope that helps, from an experienced gainer herself! ;)

Guest gfinnebraska

LOL I am dying laughing!!! I am SO much like cdford... I have 4 sizes of clothes... 4, 6, 8, 10!! Hahahaha!! Which one I wear depends on the health/condition of my celiac disease. NOT a fun way to live...

Thanks for the thyroid advice. I do need to have mine checked again. I am doing the SCD diet, and have lost 30 lbs. (yeah!!!), so the bloat is almost gone, but I still need to see if the thyroid is a factor.

AND, I LOVE spandex!!! Almost all of my pants have spandex. It is SO great!!! I am wearing a pair now! :) Cropped spandex pants ~ does life get any better??!!?? ;)

Emme999 Enthusiast

I wear multiple sizes too :) 4 - 6 - and after a big carb day (even if they are gluten-free!) 8! Ugh!

This is kinda unrelated but I thought it might make you laugh :)

I have been gluten-free for 7 months and sugar, fruit and dairy free for 4 months. I am still 7 lbs. heavier than before this all started... I eat really well and dance about 4 hours a week... help!

That link was a howl! I guess we have to face the fact that as we get older our bodies change and it's harder to lose too. I have the double whammy going too- premenstrual and I got glutened. I went up 5 pounds in a day- ugh!

pugsnapps Newbie

I'm Hypo-Thyroid & Celiac too.

I was very skinny thru my late teens/early twenties and then just started packing on the pounds (60lbs in 10 yrs). I was diagnosed with both of the issues within a few months of each other about two years ago. I did lose a little of the weight initially just by going on the gluten free diet and taking thryroid replacement therapy. That all stopped though when I discovered the very fatty/sugary delicious gluten free treats. My down fall was "Bob's Red Mill - Gluten Free Brownies" (Giradelli Cocoa & Cream Cheese).. They are heavenly :P . All the weight I initially lost came back, plus a few pounds :( .

Thankfully, I now have resorted to freezing the left overs. However, I am still struggling with my weight. Add to that the 5-10 lbs I gain when I am glutened and it was pretty depressing. However, I seem to have stumbled on something that seems to be working great... yes it is another "life style" change. I've lost 20lbs so far... Just 40 more to go :D . I based my "life style" change on info from a personal trainer/dietitian and principle concepts from the book "Body for Life for Women" . I eat 5-6 meals a day (3 meals and 2-3 snacks every 2-3 hrs, nothing after 8PM), Strict portion control (you don't need as much since you are eating more often). One day a week I do whatever I want, but the rest of the week I avoid - breads (easy), white rice & refined sugar. I eat whatever low fat protiens, low starch fruits & veggies I want. Plus, I'm taking my vitamins daily, lots of water and exercise 2 - 5 times a week. I shoot for 5 days a week, but sometimes I can only get it in 2 times a week. I feel better than I have in years... Just as long as I avoid the gluten.

Hope this helps.

Looking for help sourcing gluten-free products that do not contain potato or corn derived ingredients. I have other autoimmune conditions (Psoriatic Arthritis and Sjogrens) so I’m looking for prepared foods as I have fatigue and cannot devote a lot of time to baking my own treats.

I am so sorry you're going through this. It's completely understandable to feel frustrated, stressed, and disregarded after such a long and difficult health journey. It's exhausting to constantly advocate for yourself, especially when you're dealing with so many symptoms and positive diagnoses like SIBO, while still feeling unwell. The fact that you have been diligently following the diet without relief is a clear sign that something else is going on, and your doctors should be investigating other causes or complications, not dismissing your very real suffering.

It is just so sad that health care in the United States has come to this.  Health insurance should be available to everyone, not just the healthy or the rich.  My heart goes out to you.  I would not hesitate to have the test and pay for it myself.  My big concern would be how you could keep the results truly private.  I am sure that ultimately, you could not.  A.I. is getting more and more pervasive, and all data is available somewhere.  I don't know if you could give a fake name, or pay for your test with cash.  I certainly would not disclose any positive results on a private insurance application.  As I understand it, for an official diagnosis, an MD needs to review your labs and make the call.  If you end up in the ER, or some other situation, just request a gluten free diet, and say it is because you feel better when you don't eat gluten.      Hang in there, though.  Medicare is not that far away for you, and it will remove a lot of stress from your health care concerns.  You will even be able to "come out of the closet" about being Celiac!

Yes, I've posted a few times about two companies: Request a Test and Ulta Labs. Also, pretty much we can all request any test we want (with the possible exception of the N protein Covid test and I'm sure a couple of others) with Lab Corp (or Pixel by Lab Corp) and Quest. I much prefer Lab Corp for their professionalism, ease of service and having it together administratively, at least in DC. And just so you know, Request a Test uses Lab Corp and Quest anyway, while Ulta Labs uses only Quest. Ulta Labs is cheaper than Request a Test, but I am tired of dealing with Quest, so I don't use them so much.

PS - I think you meant this site, but I don't believe it has been updated in years: http://glutenfreedrugs.com/ so it is best to use: You can search this site for prescriptions medications, but will need to know the manufacturer/maker if there is more than one, especially if you use a generic version of the medication: To see the ingredients you will need to click on the correct version of the medication and maker in the results, then scroll down to "Ingredients and Appearance" and click it, and then look at "Inactive Ingredients," as any gluten ingredients would likely appear there, rather than in the Active Ingredients area. https://dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/dailymed/
