So Sick Of Being Sick!

My first 2 weeks I had horrible withdrawals on the diet and I was getting accidentally glutened by a few foods that I had no clue about like Wendy's chicken breast. Also wheat was in all my beauty products. I figured out what was poisoning me and I simplified my diet.

So I'm at the end of week 3 and FINALLY getting some results. My GI symptoms are almost gone and the fatigue is nearly gone, but then I came down with a stupid cold!!!

I am so TIRED of being sick and tired!!! I want just ONE day where I feel normal. I know there is light at the end of the tunnel and I know that people do get colds, celiac or not. Everyone around me has this stupid cold. It's really rampant.

But why now??????? So frustrated.

I feel ya. I have had a cold this week, and am frustrated that I can't take a darn thing since I'm pregnant. Unfortunately, illness happens - and this time of year is a good one for it! :(

Feel better soon!

Did your OB tell you not to take anything? There are TONS of meds you can take while pregnant. My celiac was undiagnosed when I had my babies, so my allergies and asthma were way out of control. I also had and still have severe GERD so I took protonix while pregnant and nursing. (I'm still nursing my 2 year old) I took plenty of meds while pregnant all with the blessing of my OB, my allergist and my pediatrician. All 3 worked together to keep me healthy.

A great site is www.kellymom.com They are a breastfeeding support site but they also have lots of info on the meds.

Same thing if you breastfeed. I know so many moms who suffered needlessly thinking they couldn't have anything while nursing and it's just not true. There are so many medicines that are safe and the health of the mother is CRUCIAL for the baby.

I've heard of people being told by midwives and doulas not to take any medications while pregnant and nursing and not only is it patently false, it's dangerous for the mother to risk her health and be sick. It's also a reason many moms quit nursing early and it's totally unnecessary.

If your OB isn't giving you options for medications that are safe, I would change doctors. My OB gave me a list of OTC meds that I could use at my first appointment.

I am right there with ya! I have only been on the diet for about 3 weeks now. I finally started feeling good. Better than I had in a long time and I felt good for about a week. The I woke up yesterday and my head was pounding! I could totally feel a cold coming on. Then I went to work and made an even more stupid decision. I decided to try to eat out for the first time in weeks. I went to Mad Greens and got a salad with "gluten free" dressing. A few hours later I felt bloated, nauseas, and then later had the diarrhea. Could I have gotten sick from a salad? It is the only thing I ate besides breakfast which I know was gluten free. So...on top of my cold, I feel sick in my stomach again. When will this stop?

It's a head cold. It doesn't *need* a bunch of meds. Of course, when I had a fever (all of 99.0) I took tylenol. But it's a head cold, and the benefit I would get out of something like a decongestant (which is never very much) isn't worth the risk for what I would get at this time. I know that there is plenty of stuff that is "safe" during pregnancy, but "safe" means worth the risks. (Such as the asthma meds I have had to take once, and the migraine meds I haven't yet had to take.) Even tylenol carries it's risks.

Sorry to have spoken colloquially.

I am here with you too! Ugh! I have been only gluten-free for 6 weeks. I just want to feel good again! I have been feeling run down for about a week and a half now. Ugh! It mostly started with my husband who got sick and kept me up Saturday night while coughing, and my son was home sick from school today. I just want this to end! Hopefully soon.

For those of you who have only been on this diet for a couple of weeks, I want to let you know that you WILL feel better as you stick diligently to the Celiac Diet, and as you learn other foods to which you may be intolerant. I eat only meats, fruits & vegetables, and sometimes only fruits & vegetables. Improving your health is a one day at a time commitment to being the best that you can be.

I've had severe Celiac problems since age 8 and am now 65. Only since 2000 have I stuck strictly to eating only meats, fruits & vegetables, and to avoiding egg whites, yeast, casein, whey, msg, maltodextrin & modified food starch derived from foods other than corn. It takes a lot of thought and consideration of yourself to find out all the foods & ingredients which may be causing your problems, but once you know what to avoid, life does get better.

Along with your dietary changes, miraculously, come changes in your perceptions and thinking about yourself and the world around you. I would always return to eating those foods that bothered me, once I felt good again. Oops! That doesn't work! Next, I was so shy about telling anyone that I had food intolerances, and to think of asking for special treatment in a restaurant seemed almost out of the question.

Now, if I need to take my own food ANYWHERE, I take it along. I've learned to speak up when eating out, and have always found the servers to be most pleasant and helpful. They want the people in their care to be well taken care of. Even family get-togethers are a lot easier since I take good care of bringing what I can eat, and don't make an issue of anything. I've learned to laugh off being called weird, or being told I have a weird diet. That took a lot of work on my own self-concept, but it was work well spent. This diet may seem weird to some, but, thank the Lord, it's saving our lives!

I went to the Farmer's Market Tuesday, and checked out some gluten bread. Upon learning that I had Celiac, the man expressed his sorrow at my "plight." I was able to say that I am now grateful to have Celiac, because I am healthier than a lot of other people I know. I have found a way of eating that I love and can live with. I tell anyone who seems interested about Celiac. I'm grateful to know firsthand what it is. Welda

Is it just me or are there a ton of bugs going around this season! Right before Christmas, both of my girls had pink eye, which was going around the classroom. They felt better for Christmas, then right afterward both came down with a nasty cold flu bug. One had a sinus infection and a sore throat, the other had an ear infection, then my husband caught it and it went into his chest as a respiratory infection. Of course I took care of every body while they were sick. Right as they started to feel better I caught it all, and I mean all of it, at once! I couldn't see, hear, or talk. We are all just now completely over everything. I figure we have filled our quota of crud for the season.

Try eating a raw clove of garlic. THAT'LL clear your nose out. If you're coughing, honey tea, if you're brave, you can always try a neti pot for your nose. I find it works wonders but a lot of people think it's gross.

Neti pot--that's the specialized thing for putting salt water up your nose? I don't have one of those, but I do a salt water flush when I have a head cold. It works so much better than any medicine and I believe it makes the duration less. And, other than feeling like you're drowning temporarily, there aren't any side effects. Totally safe for pregnancy!

Just have to add my two cents in support of the Neti Pot! I use mine regularly, especially throughout the cold and flu season. It's great for a stuffy nose, post nasal drip, and the cough that it causes.

Hope you feel better soon! :)

Yes, neti pot 2-3 times per day (when sick, less when not sick). It gives a decent gauge of how the sinus congestion is going, too, since you can see how fast the water drains through. I recommend it for *anyone* with allergies or a cold.

I use the NeilMed sinus rinse instead of a Neti Pot. I like it because you don't have to tilt your head to use it. It's a squeeze bottle with a tube that goes to the bottom so you get a full 8 oz of water to rinse with. It comes with saline packets premeasured too. They sell it at Costco but I've seen it at grocery stores and CVS too. I swear by the rinses. It helps so much with allergies and all of it.

Well yes that's true, but I guess it depends on how rotten you feel. Even natural stuff has its risks, but if the risks are minute, then it can definitely be worth it.

Not sure what speaking colloquially has to do with it.

Well, I had no idea what you all were talking about Neti pots? But Youtube knows everything and sure enough they have a video of a guy using a Neti pot.

By the way, this site is kind of interesting for getting a patient eye view of some meds side affects.

@catnapt,  Wheat germ contains high amounts of lectins which are really hard to digest and can be irritating to the digestive tract.  They can stimulate IgG antibody production as your blood test shows.   Even beans have lectins.  You've simply eaten too many lectins and irritated your digestive tract.   You may want to allow your digestive tract to rest for a week, then start on gluten in "normal" food, not in concentrated vital wheat gluten. This explains it well: Lectins, agglutinins, and their roles in autoimmune reactivities https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25599185/

I take Now B-1 (100 mg) Thiamine Hydrochloride, and Amazing Formulas L-Tryptophan (1000 mg).   Both are gluten free and free of other allergens.  I've taken them for a long time and haven't had a problem with them. I take Vitamin A from BioTech called "A-25".  It's gluten and allergen free and made in the USA.  It's a powder form of Vitamin A.  I was having trouble digesting fats at one point, but found I tolerated the powder form much better and have stuck with it since.   Tryptophan and Vitamin A help heal the intestines as well as improves skin health.  I get Dermatitis Herpetiformis and eczema flairs when my stomach is upset.  So I'm healing the outside as well as the inside.   I take one 1000 mg Tryptophan before bedtime.   With the Thiamine HCl, take 100 mg to start.  If you don't notice anything, three hours later take another. You can keep increasing your dose in this manner until you do notice improvement.  Remember not to take it in the evening so it won't keep you too energized to sleep. When I first started Thiamine HCl, taking 500 mg to 1000 mg to start was recommended.  If you've been thiamine insufficient for a while, you do notice a big difference.  It's like the start of a NASCAR race: Zoom, Zoom, turn it up!   This scared or made some people uncomfortable, but it's just your body beginning to function properly, like putting new spark plugs in your engine.  I took 1000 mg all at once without food.  It kicked in beautifully, but I got a tummy ache, so take with food.  I added in Thiamine TTFD and Benfotiamine weeks later and felt like I was Formula One racing.  So cool.  You may feel worse for a couple days as your body adjusts to having sufficient thiamine.  Feels sort of like you haven't cranked your engine for a while and it backfires and sputters, but it will settle down and start purring soon enough.  Adjust your dose to what feels right for you, increasing your dose as long as you feel improvement.  You can reach a plateau, so stay there for several days, then try bumping it up again.  If no more improvements happen, you can stay at the plateau amount and experiment with increasing your Thiamine TTFD.  It's like being your own lab rat.  LoL Yes, take one Benfotiamine at breakfast and one at lunch.  Take the B Complex at breakfast. Take the TTFD at breakfast and lunch as well.  I like to take the vitamins at the beginning of meals and the NeuroMag at the end of meals.   You may want to add in some zinc.  I take Thorne Zinc 30 mg at breakfast at the beginning of the meal.   Are you getting sufficient Omega Threes?  Our brains are made up mostly of fat.  Flaxseed oil supplements, sunflower seed oil supplements (or eat the seeds themselves) can improve that.  Cooking with extra virgin olive oil, avocado oil, or coconut oil is also helpful.   @Wheatwacked likes phosphotidyl choline supplements for his Omega Threes.  He's also had dramatic health improvement by supplementing thiamine.  You're doing great!  Thank you for sharing your journey with us.  This path will smooth out.  Keep going!

good luck! vital wheat gluten made me violently ill. I will touch the stuff ever again.
    • catnapt
I wouldn't consider this lucky. I can NOT tolerate the symptoms. And I googled it and I was not even getting 10 grams of gluten per day and I was extremely ill. They'd have to put me in the hospital. I'm not kidding.   I will have my first appt with a GI dr on March 4th   I will not eat gluten again - at least not on purpose   they are going to have to come up with a test that doesn't require it.

What Thiamine Hydrochloride brand do you take? Is it like the other vitamins I have added? What brand Tryptophan and amount do you take. Thanks
