Vocal Problems

Ok, this is troubling me b/c I make a living off of my voice as a choir teacher/opera singer.

Since going gluten-free, my voice has been raspy and just about gone. Can barely make a sound singing and my speaking voice sounds low like a guy or a smoker. Embarrassing!!! Today a lady who meant well said it sounded like I'd been screaming at a basketball game all night! She meant well....

Anyhow, I don't know if it could be acid reflux but has anyone else noticed this problem?

Also, my doctor gave me Prevacid to TRY on a trial basis to see if it helped. It made my tummy feel a little better but did nothing for the voice. Now my insurance won't pay for it so they want me to try Prilosec OTC.

Any thoughts on any of this? Help!

I am going to see an ear/nose/throat doc on Thursday but I thought I'd ask if anyone else had these problems...

this happens to me on occasion but it's usually related to my sinuses. I get terrible post nasal drip...

Happens to me when I get near gluten. My throat swells and the muscles don't work properly for a few days. My voice changes so much that my family does not recognize me when I answer the phone. Staying gluten-free seems to help the most and I can usually mitigate it by taking a vistaril as soon as I sense a glutening.

This is the first time I have heard another mention this--and yes, it's another symptom of celiacs--my sister and I, both celiacs, lost out voice the same summer and we were hoarse the entire summer--we now have deep raspy voices--that was when my boys were in little league and their sons are playing now--Deb

Oh, no...Deb please tell me that it can get better!

This is troubling news. I can only hope that it will get better. I cannot cope without singing.

I really hope this dr has something good to tell me!!!

Geez, I'm sorry, I cant seem to help anymore--I hope your doc can help you too, I just know I have read somewhere about this being a problem for celiacs--maybe you could email Dr. Green at Columbia University and ask him--I do believe he answers--maybe I can find a link for you--Deb

Hi jknnej,

Is your throat, mouth, sinuses dry? How about your eyes. There is another autoimmune disease called (sp) Sorjensons disease. I don't know much about it but I know those are some of the symptoms.

Hope you feel better soon :)

Wendy

Wow, I didn't know, that could be also a symptom :o . I had that a couple of times last year. Also in the summer and was wondering why. This is incredible. I hope that gets better...

Mine has gotten much better the longer I am gluten-free. Hopefully yours will also if it is just a side-symptom of the celiac disease.

Wow, I am getting overwhelmed by all of my health issues! I have the chest pain, still have tummy aches, a voice problem, migraines.

I think I need the candida test. I am going to the GI doc in a little over a week and I am going to show him the article on Celiac/Candida. I need to get rid of the darn candida.

I have an ear/nose/throat appt. soon as well.

too many dr's!!

@Martha Mitchell, your reaction to the lens implant with gluten sounds like it could be an allergic reaction rather than a celiac reaction. It is possible for a celiac to be also allergic to gluten as it is a protein component in wheat, barley and rye.

Scott I also have different symptoms than most people. It affects me bad. Stomach ache, headache, nauseous, heart racing, whole body shaking, can't walk then my throat starts to close. It attacks my nervous system. The only thing that saves me is a 1/2 of Xanax...it calms down my nervous system

Scott Adams. I was dealing with a DR that didn't care about me being celiac. I repeatedly told him that I was celiac and is everything gluten-free. He put an acrylic lens from j&j. I called the company to ask about gluten and was told yes that the acrylic they use has gluten....then they back tracked immediately and stopped talking to me. The Dr didn't care that I was having issues. It took me 6 months and a lot of sickness to get it removed.... which can only happen within 6 months. The Dr that took it out said that it was fused and that's why I lost vision. If they would have removed it right away everything would be fine. He put in a silicone one that was gluten-free and I've had no issues at all in the other eye. Do not do acrylic!

Welcome @Martha Mitchell, I too would like to know more about your prior lenses, and especially about the potential of gluten in lenses. In theory this should not harm most celiacs, as the autoimmune reaction normally begins in the gut, however, in those who are super sensitive or have dermatitis herpetiformis it may be a potential issue.
