Celiac Humor

I have lived with Celiac Disease for over 37 years. Though not so funny back then, most of my humorous stories would have to be from the "pre-diagnosis through diagnosis" period. However, the other day- during a brief moment of enlightenment- I came up with my first "Celiac" joke. I hope you enjoy it...

***Jeff Ash's Truly Original Celiac Joke***

While ordering dinner the other night, I was going through my usual routine of telling the waitress what I could, and couldn't, eat off of the menu. Somewhat confused, the waitress asked me what happened if I ate foods containing wheat, or gluten.

I told her that it was somewhat embarrassing and that I didn't feel comfortable discussing it in public. She told me that her mother used to be an RN and that she had heard everything. The waitress told me not to be embarrassed and to tell her what my symptoms were.

I told her that gluten gave me an erection that lasted over 4 hours.

She quickly turned away from the table, but in an instant she returned and placed a basket of rolls, and a loaf of french bread on the table.

"I get off at 9 o'clock" she said.

I hope I haven't offended anyone and that you enjoyed this joke as much as my friends and I have.

I got's chuckle on that one! At least the waitress responded to your situation eh? ;) There is a gab chat forum where the more serious, high brow types around here hangout. They even have a funny pages thread for the more erudite discussions of psillyac life. They recently lowered the entry requirements to only 3 phd's so people like me can occasionally visit too. They don't know all mine are E-bay phd's so shhsshh..!

Along those same lines... sort of.. when I was first talking to my physician about a possible diagnosis he was reading off the notes his assistant had made before he entered the room. He was asking general health questions when he read and re-read my chart and then asked why I was interested in Cialis. I was taken aback for a moment before I realized that even my spell check refuses to recognize the word "celiac." Once we cleared that up we were off and running towards a correct diagnosis. Add brussel sprouts to the mix and there is no need for the bread basket whatsoever.

 As someone who's been involved with that thread from the beginning, I can assure you the requirements are not that tough! Anybody who needs a laugh is welcome--hopefully you end up laughing with us and not at us.... :P

This treatment looks promising. Its aim is to provoke immune tolerance of gluten, possibly curing the disease. It passed the phase 2 trial with flying colours, and I came across a post on Reddit by one of the study volunteers. Apparently, the results were good enough that the company is applying for fast track approval.  Anokion Announces Positive Symptom Data from its Phase 2 Trial Evaluating KAN-101 for the Treatment of Celiac Disease https://www.reddit.com/r/Celiac/comments/1krx2wh/kan_101_trial_put_on_hold/

Hi everyone  This has been a crazy year so far... How many people actually get entire sensory overload from gluten or something similar ?  My jaw is going nuts ..and that nerve is affecting my upper back and so on ...  Bones even hurt.  Brain fog. Etc  I had eggs seemed fine.   Then my aid cooked a chicken stir fry in the microwave because my food order shorted a couple key items .   I was so hungry but I noticed light breading and some ingredients with SOY !!! Why are we suffering with soy ? This triggered a sensitivity to bananas and gluten-free yogurt it seems like it's a cycle that it goes on.  The tiniest amount of something gets me I'm guessing the tiny bit of breading that I took one tiny nibble of ...yikes ..im cringing from it .. Feels like my stomach is going to explode yet still very hungry 😔  How long does this last?! Thank you so much

I have had orthodontic work done. The 3M invisalign material was no problem. BUT my retainers are another matter. They seemed okay for a few months. Now, however, they cause a burning sensation on my tongue, gums and insides of my lips. The burning sensation is now spreading to my throat. I notice it when I breathe. This is annoying and interferes with my enjoyment of eating. I am visiting with my provider tomorrow. We'll see where this goes from here.
