I have just been diagnosed with Celiac Disease. I am 110lbs and 5'7. I am deathly afraid I will fade away on a gluten free diet. Anyone with this problem? Any advise or suggestions would be appreciated.

Wow, you certainly don't want to lose anymore weight. I was also just diagnosed with celiac and it seems losing weight can happen just naturally on the gluten free diet. But there also seems to be plenty of ways to ensure that you are consuming the right nutrients and getting enough calories in your diet. At the same time, it is tricky realising what foods you can and can't have, and sometimes food choice seem quite limited. Have you had the chance to check out what gluten free foods are available at the supermarket?

Also, have you considered seeing a dietician? My doctor recommended that I see one, so I am considering seeing one just to help me get started...a gluten free diet is quite a big life change and maybe seeing one would make the transition a little easier.

Don't fret, we've all been there and this is the group to help guide you on your journey.

In order to help, what does your daily diet look like (please note all food and beverages including water).

What type of proteins are you consuming. Proteins are the building blocks of mass and muscle.

Once we take a look at that, we can provide further direction.

Back when I was diagnosed one of my main symptoms was eight loss, among others. I am 5'4" and had gone down to 100 lbs. As soon as I went gluten free and was actually able to absorb nutrients I began gaining weight. 10 lbs. in the first week and slowly after that. About 6 months I was at 130 and have been the same weight now since 1991. I suspect you will gain also going gluten free because if you are intolerant of gluten it causes malabsorption and weight loss.

I feel for you. I am 5'8" and weighed in at 116 lbs. two weeks ago at the doc. My regular weight is around 135 lbs. so I've lost almost 20 lbs. since going on the gluten free diet (although I'm not sure how much of this is related to the diet and how much is related to psychological stress/appetite loss due to a breakup -- probably a combo of both).

My doctor has recommened that I gain weight which I have found difficult to do since all I eat is lean meat, fruits, veggies, nuts, yogurt, protein shakes, etc.). I think I've put on 2-3 lbs. in the past three weeks by basically forcing myself to eat. I have been eating spoonfuls of peanut butter, drinking protein shakes and indulging in fattening snacks like potato chips and chocolate in order to gain some of the weight back. However, it's important that you continue to eat healthy. Get lots of protein from lean meats and nuts. Eat your fruits and veggies. I also eat/drink a lot of soy products.

I understand your concern though. My weight loss has caused a plethora of other health problems including hair loss and extreme fatigue. Just do your best to eat healthy and keep your weight up. You may want to consider vitamin supplements too.

I have not had the experience of losing too much weight. Before I went on the diet, I remember thinking how awesome it was that I could eat unlimited junk food and never gain weight. Then I discovered why! I was basically starving myself because nothing I ate was absorbed. I put on weight after going on the diet because my body healed and I could absorb food again. I hated putting on that much, but I wasn't complaining simply because I knew my body was working.

I lost weight when I started the diet, few times was under 100lbs. 8 months in i finally found a nutritionist who himself has celiac. I started a whole foods diet only and the suggested supplements and never felt better. The supps are what i needed to help me gain the weight which are typical supps that we all need regardless of being Gluten intolerant or not. Its what I needed to help heal my body.

I don't know of a connection. Lots of people who don't have celiac disease/gluten issues get shingles.

I’m 43, just newly diagnosed with a horrible case of shingles last week . They are all over my face , around my eye, ear , all in my scalp. Lymph nodes are a mess. Ear is a mess. My eye is hurting and sensitive. Pain has been a 10/10+ daily. Taking Motrin and Tylenol around the clock. I AM MISERABLE. The pain is unrelenting. I just want to cry.   But Developing shingles has me a bit concerned about my immune system which also has me wondering about celiac and if there’s a connection to celiac / gluten and shingles; particularly since I haven't been 💯 gluten free because of all the confusing test results and doctors advice etc., is there a connection here? I’ve never had shingles and the gluten/ celiac  roller coaster has been ongoing for a while but I’ve had gluten off and on the last year bc of all the confusion

There were some interesting talks, particularly Prof Ludvig Stollid's talk on therapeutics for coeliac disease.    https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLRcl2mPE0WdigRtJPvylUJbkCx263KF_t

Thank you @trents for letting me know you experience something similar thanks @knitty kitty for your response and resources.  I will be following up with my doctor about these results and I’ll read the articles you sent. Thanks - I really appreciate you all.

You're right, doctors usually only test Vitamin D and B12.  Both are really important, but they're not good indicators of deficiencies in the other B vitamins.  Our bodies are able to store Vitamin B12 and Vitamin D in the liver for up to a year or longer.  The other B vitamins can only be stored for much shorter periods of time.  Pyridoxine B 6 can be stored for several months, but the others only a month or two at the longest.  Thiamine stores can be depleted in as little as three days.  There's no correlation between B12 levels and the other B vitamins' levels.  Blood tests can't measure the amount of vitamins stored inside cells where they are used.  There's disagreement as to what optimal vitamin levels are.  The Recommended Daily Allowance is based on the minimum daily amount needed to prevent disease set back in the forties when people ate a totally different diet and gruesome experiments were done on people.  Folate  requirements had to be updated in the nineties after spina bifida increased and synthetic folic acid was mandated to be added to grain products.  Vitamin D requirements have been updated only in the past few years.   Doctors aren't required to take as many hours of nutritional education as in the past.  They're educated in learning institutions funded by pharmaceutical corporations.  Natural substances like vitamins can't be patented, so there's more money to be made prescribing pharmaceuticals than vitamins.   Also, look into the Autoimmune Protocol Diet, developed by Dr. Sarah Ballantyne, a Celiac herself.  Her book The Paleo Approach has been most helpful to me.  You're very welcome.  I'm glad I can help you around some stumbling blocks while on this journey.    Keep me posted on your progress!  Best wishes!
