Tips For Preparing To Go Gluten-Free

Hi everyone,

I am still waiting for my blood test results, but am preparing myself to grocery shop/ and get ready to start the gluten-free diet next week. I was wondering if anyone has had "withdrawal" symptoms from cutting out gluten-containing products, and, if so, how to cope.

Just wondering what all I can expect.

Thanks all!

Withdrawal symptoms are somewhat common, so far half of the people in my family who've had to go gluten-free have experienced withdrawal type symptoms. If your body tells you it needs to rest, then let it rest. Just be sure that you're getting an ample supply of nutrients in order to fuel it properly for the healing process. I wouldn't jump straight to the "gluten-free" grain products, they taste quite different and if you have one soon after going gluten-free you might only compare it against wheat products instead of against itself.

I had no withdrawal symptoms. You might be worrying needlessly.

I kept really wanting to eat cereal or something with wheat in it and was also irritable beyond belief. If you can, be sure that you truly eliminate gluten products from your kitchen to make slipping up harder.

A lot of people are very hungry-- part of it will probably be the ability to absorb nutrients again-- so just go with healthy foods.

I'm on day 5 of being gluten free and I've been having headaches each evening. Headaches are rare for me so it's either gluten withdrawal or a result of eating less. Prior to being gluten-free, I would frequently snack and now it's not as easy as walking in the kitchen and grabbing whatever I want. (I'm the only one gluten-free in the house.)

I stocked up with some safe snacks and loads of fruits, veggies, and nuts at the store yesterday.

My best advice prior to going gluten-free would be to gather a list of things you like (that are safe) and a "meal plan" with recipes if needed and fill your house up with all the food you'll need. One big change for me has been not being able to just order a pizza at 7pm after a busy day.

Good luck!

i have felt like i have been hit by a truck for the last 3 weeks (not to scare you)..reallllllllllly fatigued, like i was getting the worst flu ever....yet anxious and irritable.

however, today, i actually feel "ok" (ie pre gluten days) not great but not like i am going to die any time soon.

interestingly, i have NO cravings for gluten at all..although i have had gluten-free cereal and bread.

good luck, you may have nothing but good results very possibly!!!

Yes, I, too, have osteoporosis from years of malabsorption, too.  Thiamine and magnesium are what keep the calcium in place in the bones.  If one is low in magnesium, boron, selenium, zinc, copper, and other trace minerals, ones bone heath can suffer.  We need more than just calcium and Vitamin D for strong bones.  Riboflavin B 2, Folate B 9 and Pyridoxine B 6 also contribute to bone formation and strength.   Have you had your thyroid checked?  The thyroid is important to bone health as well.  The thyroid uses lots of thiamine, so a poorly functioning thyroid will affect bone heath.

That sounds so very likely in my case! I will absolutely ask my doctor on my next bone check coming up in March... Thanks a lot!

Calcium levels as measured in the blood can be quite deceiving as the body will rob calcium from the bones to meet demands for it by other bodily functions. Also, supplementing with calcium can be counterproductive as it tends to raise gut pH and decrease absorption. More often than not, the problem is poor absorption to begin with rather than deficiency of intake amounts in the diet. Calcium needs an acidic environment to be absorbed. This is why so many people on PPIs develop osteoporosis. The PPIs raise gut pH. And some people have high gut PH for other reasons. Low pH equates to a more acidic environment whereas high pH equates to a more basic (less acidic) environment.

Kind thanks for all this valuable information! Since my Folate was/is low and also my Calcium, there IS a chance I am low in B vitamins... My doctor only measured the first two, oh and Zinc as I has twisted her arm and guess what, that was mega low too. So who knows, until I get myself tested properly, what else I am deficient in... I did a hair mineral test recently and it said to avoid All sources of Calcium. But this is confusing for me as my Ca is so low and I have osteoporosis because of this. It is my Adjusted Ca that is on the higher side and shouldn't be. So am not sure why the mineral test showed high Ca (well, it was medium in the test but relative to my lowish Magnesium, also via hair sample, it was high I was told). But anyway, thanks again for the VitB download, I will look into this most certainly!

Hello good afternoon, I was wondering if anyone has ever brought their anti-allergy pills? I have been wanting to use their Cetirizine HCI 10mg. They are called HealthA2Z and distributed by Allegiant Health.I’m also Asthmatic and these allergies are terrible for me but I also want to be sure they don’t have any sort of gluten compound.    I have tried calling them but to no avail. Has anyone ever used them? If so, did you had any problems or no problems at all?    thank you
