My daughter's saliva test from Prometheus came back yesterday. Her brief trial of gluten free (6 weeks) helped her pain but not her diarrhea. She has since gone back to a regular diet with one more month to go until her endoscopy. The GI doc wanted her to be back on gluten 2-3 months before the scope.

Dh asks why we're proceeding with the scope. I think we need to look for non-celiac causes to her symptoms.

In brief, her symptoms are: lots of gas and tummy rumbling

morning abdominal cramps and diarrhea

morning nausea but rarely vomiting

acid reflux improved on omeprazole

greasy, frothy stools with 2 abnormal fecal fat tests

endomysial antibody test negative 18 months ago and not repeated

weight loss

Feel free to weigh in with your opinions/advice.

It's always a good idea to rule out non-celiac causes of symptoms with negative blood tests, especially if the diarrhea didn't go away. It is possible she was still getting gluten somewhere or needed longer to heal. She does have a lot of signs of celiac.

The genetic tests are not diagnostic, only an assessment of risk. Celiac is more likely in someone with DQ2 than the other inflammatory bowel diseases.

Thanks but that amount of gluten will def have me in chronic pain and discomfort. My hemorrhoids issues are quite severe. Part of the reason I've abandoned diagnosis.

Are you exposed to any airborne sources of gluten? We have an older house and constantly fixing something. Cutting into old wall board or plaster can release gluten into the air. Also, the sickest i ever got was from taking care of my neighbor's chickens, they get excited and kick up everything, air filled with dust. Sure enough, their food contained gluten grain.  Any pets? If they are eating gluten, they lick themselves, you pet them .... my pets all eat grain free pet food. If I pet someone else's critters, which I am compelled to do, I immediately was hands.

For the blood screening test or any other testing, make sure you continue eating gluten every day until all testing is concluded. I'm traveling right now, but hopefully someone else can provide the link on how much you need. I think it's about 4 slices of gluten bread a day.

The early days are often tricky for the newly diagnosed.   There were times I thought I'd never feel better, but it just takes some people longer than others.   Hang on in there, and keep posting with any questions as they occur or if you need any encouragement.

Thank you, Scott, for sharing the article. I’ve been puzzled by products with gluten-free certifications that also include allergen disclosures stating the product is processed in facilities that also process wheat. It appears industry has moved on. I have little, if any, trust left in the certifications and labeling.
