Iodine?

I was reading a thread where someone was reacting to iodine. Can anyone fill me in on this? I think I'm having a problem with salt and hoping that an iodine free salt will be ok. Thanks!

elk, Do you have DH ???

elk Rookie

no

cassP Contributor

if you dont have DH, or some sort of Anaphylactic shock, then i dont think i would worry about the iodine at all. isnt it supposed to help our thyroid work better??

the 1st time i went pretty much 98% gluten free (atkins & bloodtype a decade ago)-> i dropped weight and was cured of all health problems BUT i had severe ACNE on my forehead for about 2 months. i dont think it was DH. so, i was detoxing, or my hormones were adjusting, OR i was getting too much iodine. i dont know, but after 2 months i was fine.

ff to JULY 2010, i am 100% gluten free for first time. 10 weeks now. i have my first (or 2nd?) patch of DH. its not too bad, small, and looks like its healing. i eat Sea Salt, and seafood, and sometimes seaweed. people say the Iodine makes the DH worse. idk if i want to take the iodine out tho- cause my DH isnt too bad... and i am HIGHLY SUSPICIOUS that i now have Hypothyroid :(

so, ya, idk, that was long. sorry

thank you :P . it's all very confusing and something is making me sick. Definitely have your thyroid check out just in case.

what kind of "sick"?? i hope you figure it out... a lot of us have additional intolerances, maybe we can help.??

hmmm, where to begin? One of my biggest problems is migraines - I feel like if I could get that under control then I could just suck it up when it comes to my other problems (fatigue, chest pressure/pain, nausea, flu like feeling, occasional muscle/joint pain, hoarseness or tightness in throat, headache/pressure in head, occasional sharp pains in abdomen).

Since being diagnosed with hypothyroid, I've always felt most of it's been because of that and just not getting the meds right. I do know I have ulcerative coalitis, which is "mild" and I can generally keep it under control with diet. I also know that I'm pre-menopause (the progesterone cream is helping a lot). The migraines are random AND hormonal (right now about every 5-7 days I get a 1-4 day migraine and I'm trying to figure out any ties to food). I haven't taken any medications (otc or prescrip) in over 3 months, other than thyroid and progesterone cream), so I know it's not rebound headaches from over medicating.

What else.... oh, probably celiac or intolerance. <_< There's also a strong possibility of lupus and just waiting for a final diagnosis.

But, with all that being said, I feel like a lot of my symptoms are food related. I started eating only whole foods about 3 years ago and that made a big difference, initially, but then seemed I was reacting to everything. Cutting out gluten seemed to help, but I wasn't sure and kept eating it on and off - until recently -- it's only been a week, so I'm giving it more time this time. Now it seems like grains are an issue, but I was thinking maybe I'm just crazy. I'm trying to keep a diary, but when you don't have many good days, it all doesn't really mean anything.

In addition to trying to eliminate most foods, I've started playing with my thyroid doses and the progesterone cream. It's hard because if I take my meds and the cream then I start feeling hyperthyroid, if I don't take it I get hypo symptoms, or, sometimes I feel both hyper and hypo at the same time... if that makes any sense. Generally in the morning I feel okay, but as the day goes on, I feel progressively worse. I've eliminated suspicious shampoo's, soaps, etc. When I first started using the cream as soon as I started feeling bad (late morning/early afternoon), I felt really good. Then I started feeling hyer and so I started reducing my thyroid meds (turns out progesterone supports thyroid production - who knew. Besides, it's gotten rid of 98% of my pms issues so it's doing something good :P).

As far as vitamins, my Vit D, B-12 and folates are low. I do okay with a liquid sub-lingual D, but B-12 supplements including liquid, give me migraines. I'm going to have to get the shots I suppose. Something about multi-vitamins give me migraines, probably all the fillers. I'm dabbling with a fairly clean probiotic which I seem to tolerate if I take it out of the capsule -- but, I'm guessing if the lupus diagnosis comes back definitive, then a healthy immune system is probably a bad thing. :(

It's hard to stay positive because I feel like I've done everything I can, and I still feel ill. I'm hoping as I get farther from gluten (and rice and dairy and every other food on the planet) it'll get better. Other than that, I don't know what else to try.

I just read someones post about grains and candida. I looked up the symptoms and it sounds like me. I guess I'll check into this as well.

Some people react to regular salt and sugar. Try sea salt and raw sugar. If you have only been off gluten for a week, give it a chance. I noticed that my headaches went away after 3 days of completely gluten free. I suffered from headaches for 30 yrs, I always had them would wake up with them, work with them, go to bed with them.

Good luck.

cassP Contributor

im sorry, it sounds like you're going thru a lot.

i know- i wish taking out the gluten would be the "magic bullet". most of the time, i do feel like that- but i still have some issues- i KNOW there are a lot of other things my body just cannot do.

i feel better with NO GRAINS, SUGAR, or DAIRY... but im not always able to take those out. i really love my food you know.

i have been able to eliminate most fructose problematic foods (as i have fructose malabsorption)- its helped A LOT!!! but it's an ongoing experiment- because one with fm can handle small amounts of fructose... like: i can have maple syrup on my gluten free pancakes and be FINE.. but a couple of days ago, i made those chocolate chip cookies (the ones with a nut butter and no flours)- and i THINK it was the dark brown sugar (with molasses)- but i was in horrific gas pain :(

anyways... ya, its a journey for sure. i hope you dont have lupus :) i was tested for that as a kid, but they couldnt confirm it.

elk Rookie

Thanks you guys. Ive been using celtic grey sea salt and when I do use sugar it's been organic, but not raw. I'll try that. I wonder if I get too much sugar through the fruit that I eat, but it seemed for a while that that's the only thing (I thought) that wouldn't trigger a migraine, etc. I feel like there's not much I can eat as it is, but I'll eliminate that next if I have to.

What you’re describing really does not read like typical IBS-D. The dramatic, rapid normalization of stool frequency and form after removing wheat, along with improved tolerance of legumes and plant foods, is a classic pattern seen in gluten-driven disease rather than functional IBS. IBS usually worsens with fiber and beans, not improves. The fact that you carry HLA-DQ2.2 means celiac disease is absolutely possible, even if it’s less common than DQ2.5, and many people with DQ2.2 present later and are under-diagnosed. Your hesitation to reintroduce gluten is completely understandable — quality of life matters — and many people in your position choose to remain strictly gluten-free and treat it as medically necessary even without formal biopsy confirmation. If and when you’re ready, a physician can help you weigh options like limited gluten challenge, serology history, or documentation as “probable celiac.” What’s clear is that this wasn’t just random IBS — you identified the trigger, and your body has been very consistent in its response.

oh that's interesting... it's hard to say for sure but it has *seemed* like oats might be causing me some vague issues in the past few months. It's odd that I never really connect specific symptoms to foods, it's more of an all over feeling of unwellness after  eating them.  If it happens a few times after eating the same foods- I cut back or avoid them. for this reason I avoid dairy and eggs.  So far this has worked well for me.  oh, I have some of Bob's Red Mill Mighty Tasty Hot cereal and I love it! it's hard to find but I will be looking for more.  for the next few weeks I'm going to be concentrating on whole fresh fruits and veggies and beans and nuts and seeds. I'll have to find out if grains are truly necessary in our diet. I buy brown rice pasta but only eat that maybe once a month at most. Never liked quinoa. And all the other exotic sounding grains seem to be time consuming to prepare. Something to look at later. I love beans and to me they provide the heft and calories that make me feel full for a lot longer than a big bowl of broccoli or other veggies. I can't even tolerate the plant milks right now.  I have reached out to the endo for guidance regarding calcium intake - she wants me to consume 1000mgs from food daily and I'm not able to get to more than 600mgs right now.  not supposed to use a supplement until after my next round of testing for hyperparathyroidism.   thanks again- you seem to know quite a bit about celiac.

Welcome to the celiac.com community, @SilkieFairy! You could also have NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity) as opposed to celiac disease. They share many of the same symptoms, especially the GI ones. There is no test for NCGS. Celiac disease must first be ruled out.

Under the circumstances, your decision to have the testing done on day 14 sounds very reasonable. But I think by now you know for certain that you either have celiac disease or NCGS and either way you absolutely need to eliminate gluten from your diet. I don't think you have to have an official diagnosis of celiac disease to leverage gluten free service in hospitals or institutional care and I'm guessing your physician would be willing to grant you a diagnosis of gluten sensitivity (NCGS) even if your celiac testing comes up negative. Also, you need to be aware that oats (even gluten free oats) is a common cross reactor in the celiac community. Oat protein (avenin) is similar to gluten. You might want to look at some other gluten free hot  breakfast cereal alternatives.
