Vitamin E Deficiency?

I've had trouble with my hands falling asleep way too easily, and now I have heel pain in one heel. I never connected the two, but a physician friend suggested they may both be peripheral neuropathy - which he said is commonly due to a nutrient deficiency. (No, I don't think I've lost heel fat, because I haven't lost fat anywhere else such as my butt, if anything I've gained a little weight going gluten-free.)

I had already had my doctor check my vitamin D level(which was a little low, and now I'm taking 2000); my B12 was OK, my iron was OK, my thyroid was normal. I take a multi and magnesium and C and iron and calcium and the vitamin D.

The physician mentioned vitamin E, so I looked it up and saw that wheat germ is the largest source of dietary E, and of course I'm not getting it there. I also saw that E is fat-soluble, and since I went gluten-free I don't think I get as much fat in my diet, plus I still have D and fatty stools, so now I'm wondering if the little E I get from almonds and some oils I'm not absorbing...

I tried to search the forums on vitamin E, but mostly found discussions about gluten content in supplements. Anyone have symptoms they could relate to E deficiency? Can you test for deficiency? I did see that daily megadoses over 400 IUs have been linked to higher rates of death.

      I didn't ask a doctor about this actually. I did ask several doctors a long time ago and they told me gluten has nothing to do with hashimoto's. One of them told me to do a gluten challenge to test for celiac, but at the time I was in graduate school so couldn't afford to be even more ill than I was. If you have the symptoms, I really don't advise you to do a gluten challenge. It messed me up mentally and physically for months. At the same time, I benefitted from doing the challenge in the sense that it convinced me that all my symptoms were truly from gluten - even stuff like insomnia! So now I am terrified to eat gluten, whereas before I would have a little once in a while and not notice anything dramatic.

      I am in a similar situation where I can't feasibly do a gluten challenge but have all the symptoms and I have 2 celiac genes. I'm curious if your doctor advised you to eat as if you had a diagnosis or if they were more dismissive about it.

      Negative, although I had most of the symptoms of celiac disease. I now eat as if I had a diagnosis.
