Gross Question, But I Have To Ask It :(

I was diagnosed with Celiac's November 2009...so it has almost been a year to the day that I started eating gluten free. The first few months were rough, but I have learned so much along the way and think I have a pretty good grip on what to eat and what to avoid. So my question starts with this....pre-diagnosis I had mucus in my stool which I was told was due to the gluten. Miraculously it disappeared along with all of my problems! I have felt wonderful until about a month or so ago. I have been having the same symptoms as before I was diagnosed. And now in the past two days, I have mucus in my stool again..sometimes that's all there is! I am wondering if anyone else was ok with eating gluten free along with dairy/soy/nuts and whatever else there is, but then suddenly having "glutened" symptoms. I have been so careful and cautious thinking I was getting glutened...now I am afraid maybe I have suddenly developed another allergy/intolerance? Is that possible to have it come out of no where?? Why does this happen to me right before the holidays :( I don't even know where to start with an elimination diet...I love food and was just starting to really be ok with gluten free...now something else? Help :(

I had mucus in my stools pre-diagnosis. I now get it occasionally when I am glutened, even a little bit. I never get mucus in my stool when I mess up my egg allergy or my other food allergies. I personally contribute it to getting into gluten somewhere. Reading a study in the last year said that even the BEST gluten free diets, it is impossible to 100% eliminate gluten due to changes in manufacturing, contamination, cross contamination or improper sterilization. We all do our best. Drink lots of water, exercise, and sweat any gluten out of your system. Then re-check all the labels you depend on, has something changed?, then check ANYTHING new in your routine? I hope it goes away and was just a fluke thing.

Hope you feel better!

It is definitely possible to have additional food intolerances pop up. Check the signature lines for many of the posters here and you will see them listed. Why? Why not? It just happens is all.

I agree with double checking everything in your diet for gluten first, including your vitamin pills, medicines, and drinks etc. Gluteney cosmetics/shampoos bother some people too. Especially be suspicious of any grain based foods you are eating, as there is a possibility of cc.

Some of the common intolerances are dairy, soy, nightshades, corn, eggs, etc. You can do test a run by eliminating these things for a couple weeks and see if you get better. Then add them back in one at a time for a 3 days before adding another. Also take a bit to search on elimination diet on the site there are lots of threads detailing different ways to do them.

If you can figure out what is making you sick now you may be able to enjoy your holiday season much more.

Yes, I, too, have osteoporosis from years of malabsorption, too.  Thiamine and magnesium are what keep the calcium in place in the bones.  If one is low in magnesium, boron, selenium, zinc, copper, and other trace minerals, ones bone heath can suffer.  We need more than just calcium and Vitamin D for strong bones.  Riboflavin B 2, Folate B 9 and Pyridoxine B 6 also contribute to bone formation and strength.   Have you had your thyroid checked?  The thyroid is important to bone health as well.  The thyroid uses lots of thiamine, so a poorly functioning thyroid will affect bone heath.

That sounds so very likely in my case! I will absolutely ask my doctor on my next bone check coming up in March... Thanks a lot!

Calcium levels as measured in the blood can be quite deceiving as the body will rob calcium from the bones to meet demands for it by other bodily functions. Also, supplementing with calcium can be counterproductive as it tends to raise gut pH and decrease absorption. More often than not, the problem is poor absorption to begin with rather than deficiency of intake amounts in the diet. Calcium needs an acidic environment to be absorbed. This is why so many people on PPIs develop osteoporosis. The PPIs raise gut pH. And some people have high gut PH for other reasons. Low pH equates to a more acidic environment whereas high pH equates to a more basic (less acidic) environment.

Kind thanks for all this valuable information! Since my Folate was/is low and also my Calcium, there IS a chance I am low in B vitamins... My doctor only measured the first two, oh and Zinc as I has twisted her arm and guess what, that was mega low too. So who knows, until I get myself tested properly, what else I am deficient in... I did a hair mineral test recently and it said to avoid All sources of Calcium. But this is confusing for me as my Ca is so low and I have osteoporosis because of this. It is my Adjusted Ca that is on the higher side and shouldn't be. So am not sure why the mineral test showed high Ca (well, it was medium in the test but relative to my lowish Magnesium, also via hair sample, it was high I was told). But anyway, thanks again for the VitB download, I will look into this most certainly!

Hello good afternoon, I was wondering if anyone has ever brought their anti-allergy pills? I have been wanting to use their Cetirizine HCI 10mg. They are called HealthA2Z and distributed by Allegiant Health.I’m also Asthmatic and these allergies are terrible for me but I also want to be sure they don’t have any sort of gluten compound.    I have tried calling them but to no avail. Has anyone ever used them? If so, did you had any problems or no problems at all?    thank you
