Cauliflower ,your Kidding Me ! Caulifower?

I am more than a bit overwhelmed .

I have been gluten/wheat free for over a year.

I have been almost soy free for quite awhile and just recently went totally soy free,(no salad dressings ,canned tuna ect)

Then I went totally grain free,corn, EVERYTHING grain, then next to go was potatoes then peppers.

And I think I have handled that pretty well <_< , a little crying and ,,ok maybe a tempter tantrum here and there :lol:

But now veggies like cauliflower and broccoli seem to be an issue :o This has got to stop at some point ,,right ????

I am really,really trying to just concentrate on what I CAN eat ,,,but that list is getting smaller and smaller ......Sometimes I am almost afraid to eat :(..because I am not sure what I will react to next

Can you tolerate small amounts of rice at a time? Maybe a 1/2 cup every 2.5 - 3 hours? I tried the SCDiet before but have found better success with the low FODMAP diet (combined with gluten-free diet).

It's not uncommon for cauliflower and broccoli to be an issue. I definitely cannot tolerate these. I don't want to go too in depth in case you already have a good handle on these diets. I'm assuming you've eliminated lactose? What are you eating?

Cauliflower is a goitrogenic vegetable, along with brocolli, spinach, kale and a number of others that I like. But with Hypothyroidism these things interfere with the thyroid and should be avoided. :(

I had broccoli, cauliflower, and spinach in a stir fry not too long ago and my lips literally turned blue. I was freezing cold for about an hour after I ate and it was 73 degrees in the house.

Definitely something to this.

I understand your frustration at removing so many foods. I've recently come to terms with the fact that I'm allergic to everything since I have a leaky gut and food keeps getting in and causing my body to freak out. I'm going to a Doctor that knows about this on Monday, they say that they can fix things so that I can have most of these foods again. Never Gluten and dairy has a 50/50 shot but other than that the rest should be able to be eaten again.

Keeping my fingers crossed.

Until then...know that I feel your pain.

Katie, I was lactose free for about 10 years before going gluten free.About 6 months into eating gluten free ,dairy was added back into my diet and doesn't seem to be a problem .. I really dont care for meat so my choices are getting smaller and smaller .

I eat quite a bit of fruit,some dairy,what meat i can tolerate ,sweet potatoes seem to be ok , occasionally eggs and that is about it

When I eat cauliflower/ or broccoli within 45 min I have a MAJOR headache and MAJOR brain fog,and vertigo . the indigestion and stomach pain start all most immediately , the stomach cramps and D take about 24 hours

You probably have some sort of food chemical intolerance. From the foods you list it might be fructose malabsorption or a lectin intolerance. You might do a little reading on those intolerances and see if it makes sense. Cruciferous veggies have a little raffinose and if you're having trouble with carbs a little Bean-zyme may help with the cauliflower and broccoli.

Hi there,

I've got the weirdest issue with certain foods, so I can sympathize!. Like olive oil and olives - wth - they make me feel really ill very quickly? And chicken is instant nausea... but I used a spice with that last time, so I need to double check if the gluten-free spice is actually gluten free...

Are you definitely sure it's the cauliflower doing this?

You've tested just cauliflower by itself, well cooked, with no spices/sauces to interfere with your reaction?

I find that's the best way to check if an item is a problem - just have it by itself, when you're feeling well of course, and then when you start feeling sick you know it's a problem.

Some of my intolerances have faded after a while - might be worth testing some of your forbidden foods (obviously not gluten :) ) - one at a time leaving a bit of time between tests to check the long term reaction.

Oh hon, I feel your pain!!

I'm about 15 months gluten free right now, and my diet dwindled to nearly nothing too. No grain (gluten CC), no potatoes, no soy (major gluten cc - it's a rotation crop with wheat, sigh) and on and on - yeah. I hear ya.

Don't know if this helps, but for me, the issue turns out to STILL be gluten. :o I'm just super crazy sensitive, so mulch, pesticides, coatings on fruits and veggies, fertilizer (including fish emulsion used by a lot of organic farmers) - all that has just enough gluten to contaminate the foods I want to eat. Citrus and apple peels have been big offenders, for me, sigh. Not so much for my daughter, although if she eats enough apple, she starts to have gluten reactions, too. wah.

I get vertigo with a big reaction, headaches and brain fog and aching joints like I have the flu with a small reaction.

If I grow this stuff in my own garden, though, with no mulch or fertilizers added? I can eat it all just fine. Not saying that what you have a reaction to is gluten, but if you are reacting to SO many foods, it might be worth doing some research to see if there is a common thread that comes into contact with all of these, you know? Since veggies seem more of a problem than fruits, I'd wonder if it's something used closer to the ground, like an ingredient in the fertilizer or a sprayed pesticide, rather than something used to preserve the fruit.

Might not be, of course, but you could always do a little check and grow one of these in your garden and see if it still causes trouble, or if it's safe if you grow it 'chemical free,' as it were.

Another thought - have you checked out sulfite sensitivity? I think that's one that had a number of veggies involved in causing problems. Wine was a big nasty on that one, too, I believe.

Thanks everyone, your responses have been very helpful.

I have been looking into the SCD and FODMAPS diets and have found a few permitted foods that both diets have in common , so that feels like a good starting point for me .

I am also trying to go organic with what I can.

T.H. ,,,I had not considered sulfite sensitivity as a possibility,, thank you for mentioning that, it is something to check in too.

Knowing that I am not alone in this, that others understand is PRICELESS to me, THANK YOU !! :wub:

      Cristiana, that sounds like a great approach and I will be looking forward to the results. I am in the same boat as you. I don't experience overt symptoms with minor, cross contamination level exposures so I sometimes will indulge in those "processed on equipment that also processes wheat . . ." or items that don't specifically claim to be gluten free but do not list gluten containing grains in their ingredient list. But I always wonder if I am still experiencing sub acute inflammatory reactions. I haven't had any celiac antibody blood work done since my diagnosis almost 25 years ago so I don't really have any data to go by.

      I've been reflecting on this further. The lowest TTG I've ever managed was 4.5 (normal lab reading under 10).  Since then it has gone up to 10.   I am not happy with that.  I can only explain this by the fact that I am eating out more these days and that's where I'm being 'glutened', but such small amounts that I only occasionally react. I know some of it is also to do with eating products labelled 'may contain gluten' by mistake - which in the UK means it probably does! It stands to reason that as I am a coeliac any trace of gluten will cause a response in the gut.  My villi are healed and look healthy, but those lymphocytes are present because of the occasional trace amounts of gluten sneaking into my diet.   I am going to try not to eat out now until my next blood test in the autumn and read labels properly to avoid the may contain gluten products, and will then report back to see if it has helped!

      Hi, I posted before about my son's legs shaking after gluten. I did end up starting him on vit b and happily he actually started sleeping better and longer.  Back to my 4 year old. She had gone back to meltdowns, early wakes, and exhaustion. We tested everything again and her ferritin was lowish again (16) and vit d was low. After a couple weeks on supplements she is cheerful, sleeping better and looks better. The red rimmed eyes and dark circles are much better.   AND her Ttg was a 3!!!!!! So, we are crushing the gluten-free diet which is great. But WHY are her iron and vit d low if she's not getting any gluten????  She's on 30mg of iron per day and also a multivitamin and vit d supplement (per her dr). That helped her feel better quickly. But will she need supplements her whole life?? Or is there some other reason she's not absorbing iron? We eat very healthy with minimal processed food. Beef maybe 1x per week but plenty of other protein including eggs daily.  She also says her tummy hurts every single morning. That was before the iron (do not likely a side effect). Is that common with celiac?
