Dog Treats

The doctor doesn't want me to touch or use products with wheat. Since we plan on getting a dog that would include not touching most dog treats and dog food. What about dog treats that are only made with oats or barley? Has anyone had any problems when touching dog treats made with oats or barley? I know there are 100% liver treats, which I plan on buying but some dogs can't have too much purines. I thought of making dog biscuits from oatmeal but sometimes there isn't always enough time.

What dog treats do you use for your pet?

Lovely, here is another topic that I hadn't even thought about. Sometimes, I can be soooo dense. ;) Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

I'm pretty lucky, my dogs will eat almost anything that I give them. All they have to hear is the word TREAT, and they are all over it.

Thanks again.

Your very welcome!

P.S. When I asked the doctor if it would be dangerous for me to touch dog snacks that are wheat-free but do contain oats or barley, he didn't think that I needed to worry. ;):D

Why don't you just wear a disposable plastic glove on your hand while you scoop out the dog food? It's a lot easier than trying to find gluten-free dog food!

Thanks Sara, I already thought of that. But I need dog treats for training purposes. 100% liver treats are gluten-free but I wanted to have a few choices. Carrots work for some dogs and not others. Liver works for most but now some.

But there are a few wheat-free dog biscuit choices for those that need them. :D

The food we feed our pet is Purina Lamb and Rice. Therefore a dog can digest rice. Why not give him salt free rice crackers from your own gluten free stash?

for treats have you tried hot dogs? I have never seen a dog that wouldn't jump to the moon for a piece of hot dog.

Thanks for the ideas!!!!!!

I could try rice cakes too! Maybe gluten-free cereals but they do contain sugars though. I think the rice crunchies are low in sugars. I will try tiny pieces of carrots too! I like to use healthy gluten-free snacks in one of my dog's toys. It's a large cube that spills out treats as the dog pushes the toy around the floor with her nose. No pudgy pooches here, besides I want my carpet to be free of wheat. We do lie on the carpet from time to time.

Welcome to the forum, @yellowstone! The most common ones seem to be dairy (casein), oats, eggs, soy and corn. "Formed" meat products (because of the "meat glue" used to hold their shape) is a problem for some. But it can be almost anything on an individual basis as your sensitivity to rice proves, since rice is uncommonly a "cross reactor" for celiacs. Some celiacs seem to not do well with any cereal grains.

What foods can trigger a response in people with gluten sensitivity? I've read that there are foods that, although they don't contain gluten, can cause problems for people with gluten sensitivity because they contain proteins similar to gluten that trigger a response in the body. I've seen that other cereals are included: corn, rice... also chicken, casein. I would like to know what other foods can cause this reaction, and if you have more information on the subject, I would like to know about it. Right now, I react very badly to rice and corn. Thank you.
