Can Anyone Help With Endo Results?

I am shocked - I have to say, the thought that my 4 year old could ever have anything else has not crossed my mind. My mother is celiac, I have problems with Gluten and am awaiting a biopsy.

We received his biopsy results today and I am flummoxed - I have no idea what is going on and neither does his Paed GI.

Anyone any good at medical speak?

This is what it says

a) Sections show fragments of mildly acanthotic but otherwise essentially unremarkable squamous epithelium

B) Sections show fragments of body and antral gastric mucosa. There is Mild Gastritis with a predominantly mononuclear inflammatory infiltrate in the superficial lamina propria. Helicobacter are not seen.

C) Sections show fragments of small bowel mucosa one with submucosal brunner's glands. Villi appear normal. There seems to be a minimal increase in the inflammatory cells in the lamina propria including plasma cells and eosinophils and there is a rare mucosal neutrophil. There is no increase in itraepithelial lymphocytes. Granulomas are not seenn and Giardia are not noted.

So - this means no celiac and god knows what...

His last bloods were high for ESR, Low for Zinc, Vitamin D and Iron. He has not put on any weight in a year.

I would give him a good strict trial on the diet. While it says the villi are intact damage can be spotty and get missed. It is not going to hurt him to do a trial on the diet as the changes that they have noted could be celiac related.

Thanks for your reply ravenwoodglass!

He's been gluten free for 3 weeks and has put on .4kg, He had not put on any weight before that for over a year.

I noticed in a previous thread that your DD had gastritis as her primary symptom of celiac. Wow! I had no idea that could be the case - but could explain why DS has gastritis with no bugs present and high innflamatory cells and a high ESR and low Zinc, Iron and Vitamin D. Phew.

The Dr did mention the dreaded "Crohn's" I really hope its not that.

It's great that he is already putting on a bit of weight. That is a really good sign that you are doing the right thing. Keep it up for a bit before you worry about Crohns. I have a feeling things are going to be a lot better for him before too long. It really isn't uncommon for us to have gastritis and high inflammatory cells or esinophils before the villi are destroyed.

Yea my DD was put on PPI's off and on for a long time before I was diagnosed and then she was subsequently tested. Of course both of us were told all our issues were stress and we were told my son was just small for his age. The ped even said my kids frequent stomach pains were because 'they just don't like school'. Both were honor students. They never tested either for anything GI related until after I was diagnosed.

This treatment looks promising. Its aim is to provoke immune tolerance of gluten, possibly curing the disease. It passed the phase 2 trial with flying colours, and I came across a post on Reddit by one of the study volunteers. Apparently, the results were good enough that the company is applying for fast track approval.  Anokion Announces Positive Symptom Data from its Phase 2 Trial Evaluating KAN-101 for the Treatment of Celiac Disease https://www.reddit.com/r/Celiac/comments/1krx2wh/kan_101_trial_put_on_hold/

Hi everyone  This has been a crazy year so far... How many people actually get entire sensory overload from gluten or something similar ?  My jaw is going nuts ..and that nerve is affecting my upper back and so on ...  Bones even hurt.  Brain fog. Etc  I had eggs seemed fine.   Then my aid cooked a chicken stir fry in the microwave because my food order shorted a couple key items .   I was so hungry but I noticed light breading and some ingredients with SOY !!! Why are we suffering with soy ? This triggered a sensitivity to bananas and gluten-free yogurt it seems like it's a cycle that it goes on.  The tiniest amount of something gets me I'm guessing the tiny bit of breading that I took one tiny nibble of ...yikes ..im cringing from it .. Feels like my stomach is going to explode yet still very hungry 😔  How long does this last?! Thank you so much

I have had orthodontic work done. The 3M invisalign material was no problem. BUT my retainers are another matter. They seemed okay for a few months. Now, however, they cause a burning sensation on my tongue, gums and insides of my lips. The burning sensation is now spreading to my throat. I notice it when I breathe. This is annoying and interferes with my enjoyment of eating. I am visiting with my provider tomorrow. We'll see where this goes from here.
