Iphone Apps?

I have an older cell phone (no internet- just makes basic calls). Now that I have been diagnosed with Celiac Disease, I am considering getting an iphone so I can get an app that can help identify food when I am out. What apps do you know of? Are they good or do they have problems? Do you think it is worth it? Before I spend all that money, I want to make sure it will be worth it.

Thanks!

Yes. I have "Is that gluten free?" It was $7.99 and put off buying it, but it's been so helpful in the super market. It's probably saved me a lot of money because I don't get something home only to realize it's not safe.

I don't have the restaurant app because most of the restaurants we eat at are not chains. But it might be useful on a road trip.

I use shopwell--it's online as well a an app. You put in your food restrictions and when you are at the store you can scan or type in a food and it will rank it green is ok yellow is caution and red is not the best....if it has gluten it will have a hand in a red circle---you can also look at the ingredient and it highlights what yOu can't have--its a little stricter, meaning it will say a food isn't ok when sometimes it is, but that I better than being the opposite!

Love my I phone and I pad, great for reading these forums too. I keep a list of all those "other" terms and words for gluten on the notes app ( comes with the phone) So I can check out an unusual ingrediants listed at at glance

I also use Shopwell =) definitely worth getting an iPhone. It's as easy as scanning the bar code!

Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute. If you are interested in summaries of scientific publications on the topic of oats and celiac disease, we have an entire category dedicated to it which is here: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/oats-and-celiac-disease-are-they-gluten-free/
