Neocate Jr. has L-Glutamine in it. I have read that glutamine is ok and then I have read that glutamine is not ok. Any help would be greatly appreciated. My son is 10 months old and allergic to wheat, gluten, beef, dairy, soy, casein, eggs, egg whites...etc.....

Hi Hennessey,

What exactly are you looking for? Are you looking for something for your allergic son to eat? As far as i know, glutamines are not from gluten. Just the name is similar. As to whether or not your son reacts to Neocate, that's a different issue....(is that a formula?)

My best (and most farout yet) suggestion is to get donated breastmilk from a mom who is celiac and avoiding most of these foods herself (she wouldn't have to be celiac, it's just most likely that's where you'll find a mom on that diet). And of course, feed him what you can of table food. (I am assuming you're not breastfeeding....)

Glutamine is not made from gluten it is an amino acid that we need.

It just has a name that may sound like it has gluten. You do need to check the label of the supplement to make sure it has nothing in it that he is allergic to.

Hennessey -

We just did a huge post on the safety of L-glutamine. Here's the link if you want to check it out. Open Original Shared Link

I just posted in there stating that it seems to have increased my sensitivity to the foods I'm allergic too (dairy, sesame, eggs). But, I'm not exactly sure what's going on there (pure speculation!).

Your little person looks like he is exhibiting what is known as "leaky gut syndrome" that manifests itself in *multiple* food allergies. L-glutamine is one of the few supplements that can help that.

Here is a link on L-glutamine to help you to decide what to do: Open Original Shared Link

I wish you the best!! Good luck to your son - food allergies are not fun!

Hi, Thanks for the advice. I knew glutamine was an amino acid, but just confused whether is derived from gluten. I have all these papers to read and one says if you have gluten intolerance to stay away and then the other says it is safe. This is all new to me and very overwhelming. I deeply appreciate your response. Thank you.

Thank you so very much, I will definitely check it out! My son was operated on at 10 days old, he had malrotation (intestines and bowel were twisted) and from what I have been reading it sounds as if this gluten intolerance probably came from that....not sure why he is allergic to all the other stuff, but were dealing with it best we can and all the advice I can get right now is so appreciated. Thank you again!

Thanks. Yes Neocate is a formula. And I am trying to find a formula for him. For the past 8 months he has been on soy and come to find out he is allergic as well. We are on our last try with formulas. The Neocate Junior is so disgusting tasting I doubt anyone on fear factor could drink it. I have now been just adding a small amount and into grape juice which he seems to be able to tolerate, but I was worried about the glutamine. We have one last formula to try on Monday that is flavored and free of glutamine...only thing is it says it has citric acid and that is another question I am trying to have answered whether that is ok. Funny that you mentioned breast milk, because I honestly considered renting a pump and seeing if I could start up again...I did not breast feed....I know crazy idea...but I would do anything to nurish him!

Hennessey,

Actually, you can. And that is exactly how you'd do it. Bet you didn't know that, eh :) Contact me offlist (or here) if you are seriously interested. It takes dedication, yet is possible. Also, a La Leche League Leader should be able to give you info (I say "should" because all the ones I know have this info, but I don't know if ALL of them out there do.) Your ped. will not have this info (99.99% sure of that).

You might even check with your OBGYN to see if the have a lactation consultant in their office. In addition the my local La Leche League Leader the consultant at my Dr.'s office were God Sent! :)

Have you tried Alimentum formula? My son was on it because he was "milk sensitive" and the cross sensitivity with soy is high. It is hypoallergenic and much easier to digest. It is also more expensive, but worth it. It smells really gross, but Nate never minded. Maybe this could help.

He has tried Alimentum, no good. He has tried Nutrimagen, no good. We are trying our last one tomorrow it is Pediatric E028, it is actually in the form of juice boxes. Hopefully that will work. Going back to Children's hospital in Aug for another meeting with dietician, so hopefully they will have other ideas.

Thanks for the tip. I will get in touch with you again if I decide to go that route. Trying another formula Pediatric E028 tomorrow, hopefully that will work. I will get in touch with my OB too, to see what he says about it. Thanks for the help.

i am australian. we do have plenty of substitutes, but most are very expensive compared to the originals. i believe i'll just stick to home cooked meals and not have many treats at all. it's sad but it's just so much easier. also, ive heard far too many horror stories of people ordering gluten free food from restaurants and cafés, explicitly telling servers and kitchen staff that cross contamination is a strict no go, and they still get very sick. until i find a reasonably priced fully gluten free kitchen somewhere, i am not eating out for my safety and sanity.

To Trent’s, yes, from what i’ve read it is not uncommon for digestive systems to become less tolerant to gluten over time. Many types of sensitivity or allergies arise in older people who never had a problem. I don’t see why you are focusing on anything but the fact that after years of my sensitivity to gluten, for whatever reason , it has disappeared after a bout of antibiotics. What i’ve read is antibiotics can make gluten sensitivity worse. In any event, in my case, if I can still eat all the wheat products I want with no reaction after a month or more since my hospital stay this is something that should be investigated. Time will tell.

I had a UTI, blood cultures are standard to insure that the infection does not get in the bloodstream which can lead to sepsis and death. In my case there was bacteria in my blood which necessitated 48 hours of antibiotic IV

Hi Cameo674. just read your post. Well wishes to a correct diagnosis so that you can get on track to healing and feeling better. Personally I know it’s good to have the eosinophilic disorder ruled out too, as this can show anti-ttg igA antibodies too. But usually without the anti-gliadin antibodies unless gliadin is an allergen for you. Thanks for posting the link to look up SNPs rs… numbers on another post. Was useful. Looking at your result, ”Celiac Associated HLD-DQ Typing: DQA1* Value: 05; DQA1*DQA11 Value: 05; DQB1* Value: 02; DQB1-DQB11 Value: 02; Celiac Gene Pairs Present Value: Yes; Celiac HLA Interpretation Value: These genes are permissive for celiac disease.  However, these...
