I have been gluten-free sinice DEC and I have had a pain on the lower left side of my stomach that I can not get rid of. Does any one else have it. I have had a CT scan in March and it showed some thicking of the colon wall then went to a GI Doc and he did a lower follow through and said everything was ok and said the lower pain was from the celiac dsease and wanted me to see a dietician which I'm going to thursday.

Dennis429, I use to have a bad ache where my gallbladder use to be. Boy did it ache! One of my thoughts was it hurt because it was where I had had surgery and so it was already tender in that area. It finally has stopped hurting although I still have some stomach and intestinal pain. Does it hurt less than it did in December when you started the gluten-free diet?

No it is about the same. It does hurt worse when I have gas but most of the time it is just a dull pain that will not go away. My GP did check my gallbladder and it was fine I thought it was on the right side though.

I have had this on and off since October, but mostly on for the past month. It's so annoying! I thought it was an ovarian cyst but doctor said he couldn't feel anything. Now I'm in the same place as you...no answer but in pain. If I get any lead, I will let you know. Hope you feel better soon.

I hope you can get some answers on you pain. It never hurts to get a second opinion. Even good doctors can miss what is causing the problem. If the doctor takes offense then he is not the doctor for you. Good doctors dont mind that you are going for a second, third or more opinions. Keep us updated on your situation.

I have thought about the second opinion but I think I'm going to wait until my follow up in July. I had another blood test last week and it still shows that my antibodys are still up a little bit but have come way down so I also need to find out where I'm getting the gluten from. The GI doc said it is the celiac disease that is causing the pain and that it should go away once I get my antibodys to nromal.

I just went through a ct scan for lower left pain. my gp said it was diverticulitis though I had no fever. my friend has diverticulitis and doesn't get fevers so that could be a possibility?

I had a colonoscopy first and everything was good but I had a spot that looked bruised so the took a tissue sample and it can back ok. Since I still had the pain he did a CT scan and said I had some thinking of the colon and he thought is was colitis and started me on some medication which did not help so he sent me to a GI doctor for a second opinion so the GI doctor did a Sigmoidoscopy which took some more tissue which came back fine also and said I did not have colitis so he had me do a small bowel follow-through which came back fine and said the pain had to be from the celiac disease and once it healed all the way it would go away. I'm not sure that I believe him because I have had stomach problems for a couple of years and the pain just came up in December of last year usual I just had D.

well interesting, they told me the same thing. that I had "thickening" of the colon that transverses the abdomen from the liver to the left side with a few small pockets on the left. But my GP couldn't say what was causing it, maybe colitis, crohns or c diff.... anyone else have any thoughts on this or have gone through this? at first when I was told thickening of the colon, I was a bit freaked. I thought I was on the mend from celiac, but it has only been a year and I think maybe I have forced too many complicated foods at myself too soon, raw veggies, smoothies with veggies, too many beans etc.

any thoughts please chime in!!!

Where ever I search, this seems to be a common topic, yet no solutions?

In my case, i was dx'd with celiac Oct.'10 & have been gluten-free ever since. This past Feb. the GI doc prescribed prednisone to jump start my system t accept the gluten-free diet. It certainly worked, celiac blood test numbers are improving, but during the last week of the prednisone, the pain in left side, below (not under) rib cage reared its ugly head. Since then i've had a CT & was tested for H-pylori...both not showing anything significant.

On the plus side, I feel / look much better & have gained 15 lbs.

But this darn pain just wont go away!

There has to be an answer somewhere so we can all start feeling better?

hey RJ. is the pain in LLQ (lower left quadrant) how you initially presented with symptoms for celiac? I was hoping Dennis would add to my question about what he makes of this issue. My celiac pain was more like classic gallbladder pain up near my right rib. so this llq pain really came out of nowhere. I tested negative for h pylori, giarda, but only a biopsy through colonoscopy can determine if it's microscopic colitis. have you had the colonoscopy in addition to the ct? I have to go for the c'scope soon. apparently microscopic colitis and celiac are common pairings....

the ct scan concluded that the thickening was consistent with diffuse colitis which means that something I ate or have been eating caused the inflammation. It could have been the advil I was taking for back pain, or it could have been the prilosec that I re started due to bad reflux.

HiQuincy, yep pain is in LLQ as u described, just south of rib cage , yet a bit higher than belly button

I had colonoscopy, endoscopy and pill cam in4Q of 2010,just before it was determined I had

Celiac. The ct scan was about a month after I had complained of the pain.

Recently the GI doc suggested a spinal MRI since spinal nerve endings can show up in the gut.

Time will tell,I guess?

so you have been through alot of tests. so they are suggesting that you are getting referred pain from the spine? but no back pain? I have been pain free for the past week now, thank God. Have you had stool analysis to make sure your digestive and pancreatic enzymes are properly breaking down the fats and carbs etc?

Quincy sorry I have been busy and not able to get on here much. My GI Doc can not find anything wrong and said that the pain was from the celiac dease and it would go away after my stomach got better. Which in the last 3 weeks or so the pain has went away but for some reason came back on Saturday not sure why. I was tested for Colitis after my GP thought I had it because of the thinking of the colon but it came back negative. So I'm not sure what it is I was hoping that someone on here would have a good answer. I go back to see the GI in July I will see how I fell then.

Dennis,

maybe this "pain" really is result of healing process? Mine still exists ( 3months now ).

thus far I cant get my GI doc or anyone else for that matter to confirm that it is part of healing process. I keep searching for answers tho. You described the location of it very well!

Hi @KathyR37 and a very warm welcome here.  I am so very sorry that you are going through all of this. I just wanted to check, have you ever been tested for any other gastrointestinal conditions? Cristiana

@KathyR37, I would suspect that in addition to gluten intolerance, you have other food intolerances/sensitivities. This is very common in the celiac community. The most common offenders are oats, dairy, soy, corn and eggs with dairy and oats being the big two. Have you considered this? Have you tried keeping a food diary to detect patterns?

thank you for your advice.   I have always taken them and I use Stonehedge because they are in a glass bottle, but don't have to be refrigerated.  I also like they are 3rd party tested and state gluten free. But you never know if something better has come alone over the years.

Thank you for your response. I have already learned about the info you sent but i appreciate your effort. I am the only one in my family cursed by this disease. I have to cook for them too. I make sure that my utensils are free of gluten and clean after using them for other food. I use non-porous pots and pans and  gloves when cooking for them. One huge problem I have is a gag reflex out of this world and if something doesn't taste good it is not going down. Most commercially made breads and such taste like old cardboard.Pastas are about the same. I did find one flour that I like and use it regularly, but it is so expensive! All gluten free food is way more expensive. I only eat twice a day because I cannot afford to buy all that. We live on a very low income so my food purchases are quite limited.

What you've described—the severe weight loss, the cycle of medications making things worse, and the profound fear of eating before leaving the house—is a heavy burden to carry for 15 years. It is absolutely not your fault. While everyone's journey with celiac is different, the struggles with the learning curve, social isolation, and dietary grief are feelings many in the community know all too well. Your question about whether you should just eat what you want and manage the symptoms is a heartbreaking one, born from years of frustration. It's crucial to know that the diarrhea is a sign of ongoing damage to your small intestine from gluten, and simply managing the symptom with Imodium doesn't stop that internal harm or the risk of other complications. The fact that you are still getting sick within an hour of eating, even while trying to be gluten-free, is a huge red flag that something isn't right. This could be due to cross-contamination in your kitchen (e.g., using a shared toaster, colander, or condiment jars), hidden gluten in foods, or the possibility of another concurrent condition like refractory celiac disease. Don't give up!  This article has some detailed information on how to be 100% gluten-free, so it may be helpful (be sure to also read the comments section.):
