Looking For Dairy Substitutes

I need to go off dairy for a while and I was wondering what subs there are out there for yogurt? I have smoothies for breakfast every other day and I can't think of anything different to use instead of yogurt.

I know of almond, coconut and soy milks, is there anything else? (that's not outrageously high priced) I don't like to drink soy milk straight as it tastes weird and coconut isn't much better. I haven't tried almond yet but I will. And chocolate soy milk as well, I heard that's better. ?

I never really thought about how much dairy is really in my diet. I'm seriously going to miss it. haha I just hope it's not permanent... D:

Thanks!

Can you just make fruit smoothies? Like with orange juice/apple juice and berries/bananas/etc?

I have oj fortified with calcium/vit D every morning to make up for the lost calcium from dairy.

If you use frozen fruit or fresh fruit with ice you don't really need to use yogurt or any type of dairy. They end up still being very tasty. My daughter's favorite is using frozen strawberries, canned peaches and a little bit of orange juice. Good luck finding something that works for you!

I do use fruit. Milk, yogurt and fruit. I need a sub for the first two things.

I prefer the smoothies with milk & yogurt as it's more filling. Thanks though. :]

I have seen coconut milk yogurt and soy yogurt but both are expensive. You can also try alternative milks however as they won't taste the same in the smoothie as they do straight or on cereal. Almond milk and coconut milk beverage (in the half gallons in the milk section-- coconut milk in the can is different) come in a variety of flavors--plain, vanilla, sweet, unsweet, chocolate. There is also hemp milk and rice milk (avoid Rice Dream brand however, the carton says it's gluten-free but it is made with barley water and gives some people trouble).

For baking I use olive oil, coconut oil (which is solid in form at room temperature) and palm oil shortening. For creamy dips and dressings I use mayo (I am still experimenting). Earth Balance makes a dairy free spread (I have not tried it because I can't find it in my stores).

I use coconut milk for fat in my smoothies and some protein powder along with the fruit. Filling and doesn't give me a hypoglycemic ride. :)

Just cow? If not, what about goat yogurt? My wife loves it.

There's also hazelnut and hemp milks. Plus rice milk, but I'd suggest making it yourself since some folks have reported reacting to cc in the biggest brand.

Have you tried the newish So Delicious coconut milk? I think it's pretty good mixed into anything and coconut's such a good fat, IMO.

Also, there's a coconut milk creamer that's tasty and might really make a smoothie creamy.

Yes, I, too, have osteoporosis from years of malabsorption, too.  Thiamine and magnesium are what keep the calcium in place in the bones.  If one is low in magnesium, boron, selenium, zinc, copper, and other trace minerals, ones bone heath can suffer.  We need more than just calcium and Vitamin D for strong bones.  Riboflavin B 2, Folate B 9 and Pyridoxine B 6 also contribute to bone formation and strength.   Have you had your thyroid checked?  The thyroid is important to bone health as well.  The thyroid uses lots of thiamine, so a poorly functioning thyroid will affect bone heath.

That sounds so very likely in my case! I will absolutely ask my doctor on my next bone check coming up in March... Thanks a lot!

Calcium levels as measured in the blood can be quite deceiving as the body will rob calcium from the bones to meet demands for it by other bodily functions. Also, supplementing with calcium can be counterproductive as it tends to raise gut pH and decrease absorption. More often than not, the problem is poor absorption to begin with rather than deficiency of intake amounts in the diet. Calcium needs an acidic environment to be absorbed. This is why so many people on PPIs develop osteoporosis. The PPIs raise gut pH. And some people have high gut PH for other reasons. Low pH equates to a more acidic environment whereas high pH equates to a more basic (less acidic) environment.

Kind thanks for all this valuable information! Since my Folate was/is low and also my Calcium, there IS a chance I am low in B vitamins... My doctor only measured the first two, oh and Zinc as I has twisted her arm and guess what, that was mega low too. So who knows, until I get myself tested properly, what else I am deficient in... I did a hair mineral test recently and it said to avoid All sources of Calcium. But this is confusing for me as my Ca is so low and I have osteoporosis because of this. It is my Adjusted Ca that is on the higher side and shouldn't be. So am not sure why the mineral test showed high Ca (well, it was medium in the test but relative to my lowish Magnesium, also via hair sample, it was high I was told). But anyway, thanks again for the VitB download, I will look into this most certainly!

Hello good afternoon, I was wondering if anyone has ever brought their anti-allergy pills? I have been wanting to use their Cetirizine HCI 10mg. They are called HealthA2Z and distributed by Allegiant Health.I’m also Asthmatic and these allergies are terrible for me but I also want to be sure they don’t have any sort of gluten compound.    I have tried calling them but to no avail. Has anyone ever used them? If so, did you had any problems or no problems at all?    thank you
