gluten-free now for a whole year!! i had been diagnosed for months before and didn't tell a soul (denial) until i was sooo sick i couldn't avoid either taking ACTION or starving to death. i walked around for days crying and terrified, thinking: how in the world can i manage this - I CAN'T! IT'S TOO MUCH!! then my husband found me this wonderful website and all you beautiful celiacs. i couldn't have been this far down the road to recovery without you all - THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart!!!! thanx for listening to me rant and whine - i hope to be as helpful to other people as you have been for me, especially in the beginning when it seems so overwhelming (i remember clearly standing in the grocery store, thinking: I CAN'T EAT *ANYTHING* then i left without buying anything.....) i am on this site every day, reading and hopefully learning better ways to cope with everyday things i used to take for granted. you guys understand like nobody else. i feel ten years younger although i am still healing, things are getting better. 'good' days are more frequent than 'bad' days now :) sooo: thank you for helping me take my life back. it suuuure feels fiiiiine :D

Good for you! You have done extremely well. I bet in retrospect a year does not seem very long! Be proud of this gigantic accomplishment. Revel in it. :D

It is so nice to age backwards :D

Great to hear you are feeling better. The gluten free lifestyle does take some getting used to but it is so worth it in the end.

you bet! i am infamous for my lack of willpower lol so this is pretty huge for me to say: i did not cheat one single time :D glutened myself accidentally or stupidly, yes. thank you love2travel for giving me recipe insprirations :)

      Guinness, can you drink it?

      Before being diagnosed coeliac I used to love Guinness. Being made from barley it should be something a coeliac shouldn’t drink. But taking to another coeliac and they can drink it with no ill effects and have heard of others who can drink it too. is this everyone’s experience? Can I drink it? I get dermatitis herpetiformis and don’t get instant react...

I'm not sure if they are certified though. https://www.9whitedeer.ie/ I haven't come across any certified gluten-free stouts this side of the pond.

      This is a very common question, and the most important thing to know is that no, Guinness is not considered safe for individuals with coeliac disease. While it's fascinating to hear anecdotes from other coeliacs who can drink it without immediate issues, this is a risky exception rather than the rule. The core issue is that Guinness is brewed from barley, which contains gluten, and the standard brewing process does not remove the gluten protein to a level safe for coeliacs (below 20ppm). For someone like you who experiences dermatitis herpetiformis, the reaction is particularly significant. DH is triggered by gluten ingestion, even without immediate gastrointestinal symptoms. So, while you may not feel an instant stomach upset, drinking a gluten-containing beer like Guinness could very well provoke a flare-up of your skin condition days later. It would be a gamble with a potentially uncomfortable and long-lasting consequence. Fortunately, there are excellent, certified gluten-free stouts available now that can provide a safe and satisfying alternative without the risk.

      NCGS does not cause damage to the small bowel villi so, if indeed you were not skimping on gluten when you had the antibody blood testing done, it is likely you have celiac disease.
