Pyroluria?

Hi,

My daughter has been gluten free for about 4 months and her panic attacks have gone away but she still has anxiety especially under stress. I was reading about pyroluria a condition which causes extreme deficiencies in B6 and zinc and is seen a lot in people who are also gluten intolerant. She seems to have many of the symptoms. Does anyone know about this? Where to get good testing etc?

Thanks, Nadia

Hi Nadia,

I have never heard of pyroluria, and it is not in my medical textbooks. If it is a Latin based word, like most medical terms, it would translate to something along the lines of "fire urine" as pryo means fire and uria refers to urine/urinary tract. Are you talking about polyuria? If so, that means that person makes too much urine, usually due to diabetes.

pyroluria isn't a condition that's recognized by the scientific community.

Yeah, it's a bad sign when you type "pyroluria" into PubMed and only get one '70s article. It looks like one of those whacky orthomolecular psychiatry pseudo diagnoses. A lot of quacks writing about something on the internet does not make it real.

A LOT of gluten intolerant people have anxiety and four months into the diet is not always long enough for it to go away. I manage mine by taking lots of vitamins and minerals, including a fair amount of B12. I also absolutely have to take fish oil every day, 1-2 capsules of double or triple strength. If I slack on the fish oil or B12, the anxiety creeps back.

Also make sure her food isn't getting cross-contaminated with gluten. Even small amounts of gluten are enough to set off anxiety reactions in a lot of us. Is your kitchen gluten-free or is the rest of the family still eating wheat?

Thank you ,it’s been a long road for me for having both now ,what upsets the most is that if they discovered that I also have cealiac earlier I would not have injested gluten if I was aware. Double whammy.

Some interesting articles regarding the use of Zinc Carnosine to help heal gastric ulcers, gastritis and intestinal permeability. I would consult a medical professional about it's use. https://www.nature.com/articles/ncpgasthep0778 https://www.rupahealth.com/post/clinical-applications-of-zinc-carnosine---evidence-review https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7146259/ https://www.fallbrookmedicalcenter.com/zinc-l-carnosine-benefits-dosage-and-safety/

He is. Which makes everything even more difficult. I’m not a believer in “staying for the kids” but I have nowhere to go and it’s not just me, it’s me plus my babies. We live in a beautiful place, lots of land in the country and me and the kids love the place we’ve called home for their entire lives. But Im seeing that he’ll never change, that my kids deserve a happy healthy Momma, and that staying in this as is will be the early death of me. Then I look at the scars covering my entire body…this disease and the chronic stress I’ve been enduring for years that tell me I’m no longer beautiful and no one will ever look at me with interest again. I try self care, try to give myself grace so I can just start loving myself enough to gain strength but the slightest sparkle in my eye and skip in my step attracts his wrath and it all comes crashing ten fold. Life is just absolutely railing me from every single direction leaving me wanting to wave that white flag bc I don’t feel like there’s much hope no matter what happens.
