The new labeling has begun at WalMart. I didn't find a lot of products with the "no gluten" labeling just below the ingredients yet, but there were some and that was a good sign. As they promised earlier this month or late in July, WalMart will be labeling over 900 of the 1200 of their Great Valu products as being gluten-free. I would imagine as they run out of the former amount of product that didn't have the gluten-free label, they will be replacing their products with the products that have the new labeling. Can't wait to get back there (45 minutes from my house) and see what they have that is gluten-free next time. I love their pricing. I wish they didn't inject their meats.

I am not sure how I feel about this whole thing, yet. I have local Walmarts and my brother works at one. He has Celiac Disease and this will make it easier for him to eat something at work. However, I think I will stick to my local heath food stores.

Don't know....just heard that they do. I think it could be some kind of boullion or something that might have gluten in it. Pork at one of the grocery stores I shop at is injected and at the other store in town they have both kinds. The kind that isn't has a blue sticker saying it is pure. I even got lazy today (as I am writing this, I just though of it) and bought four pork chops that were injected today...none for me now. You should ask. Chicken, can also be injected and you should look at the package to see that it is natural before buying it.

I'm glad the labels are popping up! I need more info on the meat! We just bought more lean ground beef, chicken, pork chops and round steak which we all ate for dinner tonight! Do I need to stay away from the walmart meats? Should I get Tyson chicken? What stores are safe? I live near Kroger food stores. I also have access to the Schwann's delivery service. please give me some ideas. Thanks!

I think Walmart injects some of its meat with a sodium and preservative solution. I know it adds a significant amount of sodium to the meat. I can't remember now what the specific ingredients are, but when I read the label I thought it was ok for my daughter. Maybe sodium benzoate?? I'll be sure to double check next time I am there.

I think next time I am at WalMart, I will ask the head meat person about the injecting issue. As long as they are so on top of the lableing issue with their packaged products, they may as well get on top of this issue too.

Hello all,

I am a real newbie. I plan to start my 3 yr. old daughter Sophie on a diagnostic diet on Monday, & your info is so helpful. I just went to Sam's this morning which, of course, is a Walmart company. I bought Pilgrim's Pride chicken (whole & breasts) & it said something like "enhanced with up to 12% broth" but I was happy to see that it was specifically labeled gluten-free. Don't know about Tyson...

I looked at the pork injected with broth solution at my local Walmart yesterday. Here are the ingredients:

Pork broth, potassium lactate, salt, phosphates, natural flavoring, ascorbic and citric acid.

As far as i can tell, natural flavoring would be the only questionable ingredient. I have not checked with Walmart yet about the source of the natural flavoring. Has anyone else?

I always try to stay away from any meats that are injected. At my local grocery store, they have pork that is pure and marked so and pork that is injected. The chicken is natural and angus beef is not injected. I have heard people say that they think the reason WalMart's meats look so good is because they do things to them so that they look that way and that makes me leary. Maybe they will also start labeling their meats gluten-free, so then we will know. Let's also ask the head meat guys at our local WalMart and see what they say. They sure are on the right track. I asked about the injection solution in an e-mail to WalMart. When and if I get a reply I will let you know what the answer is. There is only one Supercenter near me, and I have not noticed any of their meat labeled as being injected, so maybe not all of the stores have the same meat products. Or perhaps it is just that the products I look at and buy are not injected. Either way, I will post the answer from WalMart. But I think maybe it is just a solution similar to the ones in some turkeys and chickens.

We Tyson chicken all the time and my son doesn't have any trouble. My grandmother works at a food pantry in Arkansas where the Tyson plant chickens are raised and so Tyson always gives the chicken and turkeys and she gives us some. We have always eaten them with no problem.

How do you know when something is injected? What exactly does the label say so that you know or suspect, so you know to look into it?

I know Wal Mart has extra lean ground beef that I would love to eat, but I don't know if there is anything injected or not. Please let us know when you find out....

I contacted tyson abot two weeks ago and they wrote me a letter stating that there was no gluten in their whole chickens "enhanced" with broth. I don't know about the other chicken parts...we usually only get the whole chickens.

It usually says something like "contains no more than a 12% broth solution" or some similar wording in very small print on the label. Another clue is that the sodium is almost always increased. Most fresh meats have very little sodium, but injected meats have around 300 mg per 3 oz portion.

I've cked with Tyson and their fresh ckn breasts and their sknls/bnls frozen separate breasts are gluten-free too. The broth they are frozen with is made only from ckn.

I heard meat especially chicken and turkey is injected sometimes with HVP Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein, which is sometimes wheat based. Does anyone know anything more about that? Or if someone is going to Walmart, it might be something to ask.

If a whole meat product has any additives which add "nutrition" to it, it must be labeled. As I recall, this is a USDA rule, and means that ANY meat containing wheat, oats, etc. MUST label that such things are added. (This is a *different* rule than non-meat items, of course.)

I have been waiting and waiting since they annouced the new labeling on the gv Wal-mart products. Every little bit helps with the budget when you are a single parent.I have yet to see any differences last week when I checked.

Anyways, right off the bat does anybody know if their gv brand worcestershire sauce is gluten-free? (I just spent about 35 mins. trying to search on this message board and googled it).

It list vinegar and natural flavorings. Help, I was hoping to use it in a recipe tonight for dinner.

Has anybody been able to compile a list of their gluten-free products yet?

we were at Walmart today and I saw a few items with the gluten-free label on them... mostly in the lunch meat area... I looked at other stuff that "should" be gluten-free but I couldn't tell.

I don't know if their Worcestershire sauce is or not.

      thank you, i have been doing that the last few weeks and will continue to do so. I had not had my ttg iga checked since I was diagnosed 14 yrs ago so I am not sure if they ever dropped below the 15-20 range.    all my other labs are completely normal but I am concerned that this may be signs of refractor celiac or something else since I'm so careful with gluten-free diet

      Around 9% of celiacs cannot tolerate any oats, even gluten-free oats. It might be worth eliminating them for a few months, then get re-tested.

      I only eat certifed gluten-free products but a lot of which are processed. Could there be trace gluten in those or is that very unlikely?

      For people with celiac disease hidden gluten in their diets is the main cause of elevated Tissue Transglutaminase IgA Antibodies (tTG-IgA), but there are other conditions, including cow's milk/casein intolerance, that can also cause this, and here is an article about the other possible causes (you may want to avoid oats):
