Eye Doc

A couple months ago I posted about my vision difficulties. I was having trouble with yellow leaves blinding me with brightness, stripes on shirts or blinds on windows were blinding. Someone suggested that I try cod liver oil. I read about it and started taking 3 gel tabs daily. It was a matter of days before my issues were resolved.

Yesterday I went to the eye doc for a regular appt. He had it noted from 3 years ago that I was having trouble with double vision, blurred vision, night blindness. So I updated him, let him know I was diagnosed with celiac and apparently was not absorbing nutrients which caused thes issues for me. This man has been in his line of work for many years and I trust him. He told me that he had never heard this from another patient but found it very interesting that cod liver solved the issues and said he would have to do some reading on the subject.

I was kind of surprised he did not have this knowledge but I keep seeing this. Surely this is not all that uncommon, is it?

Cod liver oil has helped me too. Am glad to hear it is working for you!

I just learned however that D3 is even better and safer since taking too much cod liver oil can create toxicity--as it did with me apparently after a while. Like the old Chinese saying, too much of a good thing is still too much.

Apparently the D-3 is from a plant source and much less capable of being toxic. Am trying it now. I'll let you know if/how it agrees with me. I still have issues with moons on my fingernails etc. so its obvious I need more vit. D--especially in the winter time.

Meanwhile, no matter what, the ignorance of doctors about basic common sense nutrition affecting us continues to amaze and confound me even though by now I am coming to expect it. But when it actually confronts me with yet another example, I continue to shake my head in disbelief!

Yes, this is one of the great assets of cod liver oil, and because of the D3 in the tabs I was actually able to back away from any additional vit D supplement. The A in the cod liver oil may just help your nails. You'll have to let us know how it works for you.

Are you suggesting I take both?? I could I suppose. A teaspoon of cod liver oil in the morning and a potent D3 capsule at night. Otherwise I don't take a vit. A supplement.

No, does your cod liver tabs have vit D in them? I was able to cut out my D and just use the codliver that has D in it.

All cod liver oil has both vitamin A and D. Apparently the D3 in cod live oil is safe. However the high doses of A can be a problem for some people. At least that is what I was told just recently. So, given that, for higher doses, just plain D3 might be better.

Honestly however all this is confusing me a little. I need to talk to my boyfriend who did some research on it the other day. I think he wasn't quite correct. I think he got D2 and D3 mixed up. I just looked it up and it was quite opposite to what he said. D3 is from animal sources whereas D2 is from mushrooms and yeast.

Huh. I was just telling a friend of mine the other day that it seems since I went gluten free my vision took a nose dive. I can't even SEE my finger nails now without glasses on! I need them to read labels, etc. My fingernails also aren't what they used to be. I find they are peeling/breaking a whole lot more since going gluten-free. Perhaps I should try some cod liver oil? Does it comes in pill form or do I have to do nasty teaspoons of it?

Yes, I would be surprised if you did not see improvements using cod liver oil. I was having ALOT of visual issues. You probably can still get cod liver in the old fashion bottles but they actually now have oil tabs you can take. A person can end up with toxicity from either D or A vits but in this form it is my understanding that the body processes it better.

I am trying out taking a high dose of D3 (2000 IU's!). Theoretically it is now considered safe. My fingernails still have moons and are a little ridged even though I take a lot of calcium, magnesium, zinc, and trace minerals, including silica drops. I have a lot of scar tissue damage of my villi I am certain so it makes it difficult to absorb the minerals properly. I take nattokinase by the way to help counteract the scar tissue--which I have noticed does help. Helps me be able to do push ups I otherwise couldn't due to sore elbows if I am off the natto or off some of my minerals including and most especially the silica drops and the E-zob calcium.

I stopped taking cod liver oil for the most part for quite a while after a blood test indicated I had built up too much of the oils from it--which were toxic. I was taking a tablespoon a day for a number of years. It helped against getting sprains nevertheless. But as said after the blood test I pretty much stopped except for the occasional teaspoon of codliver oil now and then.

Being off all trace gluten of course plus taking all the minerals and co-enzyme vitamin B complex since then has also helped. But the moons in the fingernails supposedly are a sign of poor health or old age. Mine are pretty prominent even though my hair has improved (has wave and body whereas in the past it was straight and was always falling out in bunches in my comb). Improvements in my fingernails should be an easy way to see if this D3 is working for me or not.

What would be really nice is to not need to take so many minerals! However I don't know if that is realistic or not. I periodically substitute lesser varieties of calcium for my expensive kind, but invariably go back to the expensive E-zorb calcium since it seems to be the only one that really works for me.

I figure meanwhile I get plenty of vitamin A from eating lots of parsley smoothies (with celery and lettuce) and yams with the occasional (nasty) catfish. I am allergic to carrots and thus react to beta carotene made from them...so I use yams a lot like carrots, and even use them in many of the baked goods I make. When I don't, I then pull out the cod liver oil...

Supposedly the word is that the retinol from the cod liver oil or any other source, is not as good for one as the beta carotene....

So I've been dealing with chasing the name celiac because of my body actively dealing with health issues related to celiac though not eating. Diagnosed in 1994 before foods eliminated from diet. After 25 years with former pcp I googled celiac specialist and she wasn't because of what ive been through. I wanted my results to be sent to my pcp but nothing was sent.I have email copies.I did one zoom call with np with team member from celiac specialist in Nov 2025 and she asked me why I wanted to know why I wanted the celiac diagnosis so bad, I sad I don't, its my life and I need revalidaion because its affecting me.KB stated well it shows you are.I asked then why am I going through all this.I was labeled unruly. Its been a celiac circus and medical has caused anxiety and depression no fault to my own other than being born with bad genetics. How is it legal for medical professionals to gaslight patients that are with an ailment coming for help to be downplayed? KB put in my records that she personally spent 120min with me and I think the zoom call was discussing celiac 80 min ONE ZOOM call.SHE is responsible for not explaining to my pcp about celiac disease am I right?

I've noticed with my age and menopause my smell for bread gives me severe migraines and I know this. Its alarming that there are all these fabulous bakeries, sandwich places pizza places popping up in confined areas.Just the other day I suffered a migraine after I got done with my mri when a guy with a brown paper bag walk in front of me and I smelled that fresh dough bread with tuna, I got a migraine when we got home.I hate im that sensitive. Its alarming these places are popping up in airports as well.I just saw on the news that the airport ( can't remember which  one)was going to have a fabulous smelling bakery. Not for sensitive celiacs, this can alter their health during their travel which isn't safe. More awareness really NEEDS to be promoted, so much more than just a food consumption!FYI I did write to Stanislaus to let them know my thoughts on the medical field not knowing much about celiac and how it affects one.I also did message my gi the 3 specialist names that was given on previous post on questions on celiac. I pray its not on deaf door.
