Since celiac disease/gluten intolerance is often present in those who are type one diabetic, and knowing that there are a number of other type one members here, I thought I would share this bit of great scientific news. It sounds promising! :)

That's really neat Mlee. Sure sounds like it might work out. I kind of wonder how safe the intestines are from autoimmune attack though. They may be under a misapprehension there.

"The location of the cells in the gut may also prevent the diabetes from destroying the new insulin-producing cells, since the gastrointestinal tract is partly protected from attack by the immune system."

Seems like I have heard of a few people who's immune systems do more than protect their gastrointestinal systems somewhere. :)

Hmmmm.. . .. . ...yeah... . ...immune system as protector......

Rather over-protective, at times....... <_<

It's great that they've found out about this? It may take time to develope it into a good treatment..but isn't it wonderful that there's a chance of using something other than shots of insulin for type 1? :D

Man, yes... . . .. but for me the really big thing would be the cessation of all the blood tests I must do per day..... :)

Interesting, when I suffered for a few months with ectopics I noticed that carbohydrates would cause indigestion and bloating in my stomach, then that would lead to my heart skipping beats, and I could feel it in my throat, it was very unsettling.  My last serious bout of this was after eating a Muller Rice Pudding for breakfast.   I happened to be wearing a 48 hour halter at the time and cardiology picked it up, but they weren't worried about what they saw. There was some British doctor who'd made some videos on the Vagus nerve that I remember watching at the time which made sense of what I was experiencing, there did seem to be some sort of connection.

I asked my cardiologist about stopping vitamins.  He said his tests account for all detectable vitamins from sources other than food.  I only need to stop them for a couple of days.  He has me keep records of meds and vitamins I've ingested over the past 10 days and prior and he does his calculations.

Reply to treats I try and eat to bring up the glucose. Sometime I get up 3 times a night and eat something. I don't think food is the issue. A lot of the food they say should help doesn't.  Many mornings my level is 59 and I feel sick, sometimes for hours. It has been recommended I go to an Endocrinologist.
