I would like to do some sort of complete body cleanse or colon cleanse. Something that will just completely clean me out! But I know that some of these products contain gluten. Do u guys know of any that don't contain gluten?

Clean you out of what?

I do NOT recommend that any newly diagnosed celiac or anyone suffering from intestinal issues of any kind do a colon cleanse.

Your intestinal walls are ravaged and trying to REGROW the mucosal lining. It is contraindicated in inflammatory bowel diseases.

Who on earth suggested this to you?

Jestgar Rising Star

I agree with IH here. Your body is designed to empty itself out. Why on earth would you want to put yourself through the stress of a forced "clean out" if you don't have to?

Skittles Enthusiast

I want to because I have had chronic constipation my whole life. So your body may be designed to clean you out but my body does not do it so easily. it is very difficult. I was just looking for help, not for someone to make me feel stupid about wanting this

I guess, if you feel you need to do this, you could just do the standard colonoscopy prep. Its cheap and obviously works or they couldn't do a colonoscopy. Just don't do it repeatedly. that is dangerous and damaging.

This is the one my hub was given and it seemed to work well.

COLONOSCOPY PREP 1

MIRALAX PREP

Purchase over the counter:

 4 Dulcolax or Bisacodyl 5mg laxative tablets

 Miralax 238gm bottle

 64 oz bottle of Gatorade or Propel Fitness Water (no red, blue or purple)

5-7 days before the procedure stop taking aspirin, ibuprofen, Coumadin, Plavix, Celebrex or any other blood thinning medication. If you are on blood thinning medication make sure you check with your cardiologist or prescribing physician before discontinuing the medication. Also discontinue iron or multi-vitamins that contain iron.

3 days before the procedure stop eating any raw vegetables or vegetables containing seeds, corn, popcorn, nuts, seeds and stop any fiber supplements you are taking until after the procedure.

The day before the procedure you will be on a clear liquid diet the entire day. See instructions for Clear Liquid Diet.

 At 3:00pm take 4 Dulcolax/Bisacodyl tablets.

 At 5:00pm mix 64 oz bottle of Gatorade or Propel with the bottle of Miralax. Drink this within a 2-hour period. If you become nauseated or begin vomiting while drinking the solution, slow down and when the nausea subsides begin drinking the solution again.

 Continue the liquid diet until midnight and then have nothing to eat or drink after midnight.

yeah. Or you could consider just trying the 'clear liquids diet' part for a day and see if that helps. Might be less harsh than the full plan.

No one is trying to make you feel stupid for wanting to do this they are simply letting you know that it is a very dangerous thing for us to do.

If you haven't been gluten-free very long please know your body will get more regular once gluten is gone from your diet. Some of us, myself included need to drop other things, for me it is soy as that binds me up for days.

If you can increase your water intake and add more fruits and veggies that is a better way to cleanse. In oriental medicine sweet potatoes are used to regulate the bowel when either C or D is present.

I had a very severe reaction to a clean out before a colonoscopy using the items mentioned in the previous post so if you do chose to do it make sure that you have someone there to help get you medical attention if you should react badly.

kareng Grand Master

I have seen several doctors on TV say that just water, tea and lemon juice for no more than 24 hours is a good cleanse. But that was based on the fact that the average person, in 24 hours, would have emptied everything out.

I don't think doing this once would be harmful for most. I just worry that someone reading this would try to do it weekly or even monthly. That would probably be too harsh for thier system. For me, this prep made me feel pretty bad. My hub had no issues.

Also, the blood thinning med is about the procedure and the need to remove polyps, probably doesn't apply to this as a clean-out.

I gotta say, just reading that makes me never want to have a colonoscopy. Granted, I've never had constipation, so I don't have that perspective, but geez....all those laxitives...zowie

I just figured that if you were determined to do this, this is safer then those $500 ones that go for a week or a month.

oh, Hon, no one is trying to make you feel stupid. Not at all!

We are worried about you doing this thing!! It is NOT a good idea.

Of course you are uncomfortable--I KNOW, I had C and D my whole life.

A tablespoon of ground flaxseed meal or gluten-free psyllium husks in 16 Oz. of water twice a day will "get you going".

Take probiotics. DRINK a LOT of water. Most of C is dehydration.

Eat apples, broccoli, other fiber rich veggies.

Those Miralax preps are used before a colonoscopy and they make you feel pretty lousy. I was sick for 2 days from it. And they upset your electrolytes and all the good flora in your gut and I just do not want you to feel any worse than you already do.

Yes I deff have to get some flax! :)

I have gone down the colonoscopy prep road three times. The prep is more of a pain that the actual procedure. The purge provides a complete colon cleanse, if that is what you really want. It enables the procedure to examine the colon free of content or dark colors, so that things outside of normal can be seen.

I would echo IrishHeart--this is not an idea to take lightly if your digestive tract is damaged by celiac disease and has not recovered. If you are still looking for answers, the combination of a colonoscopy and an endoscopy is indicated to check for issues at both ends of the channel.

Skittles Enthusiast

I have had the endoscopy but not the colonoscopy. I think I may make an app with my doctor. And in the mean time I dont think I will bother getting one of those commercial cleanses.. Thanks for all of the advice guys :)

where would I get flax seed? is it at the regular grocery store? if so, what section? or would I get it at a health food store?

IrishHeart Veteran

My hubs found it at the health food co-op, the grocery store in the "natural and organic" section and it was also on the shelf with the Bob's Red Mill gluten-free baking products in another store and I have also purchased it online from nuts.com

I get the whole flaxseed, and grind it (using a small coffee grinder) into a meal for use in smoothies, breads, granola bars, muffins etc. and you can drink it right in a big glass of water or juice.

psawyer Proficient

You can order it online from Bob's Red Mill.

Bob's products are also sold widely in stores; there is a store locator on the site.

I followed the Autoimmune Protocol Diet which is really strict for a while, but later other foods can be added back into your diet.  Following the AIP diet strictly allows you digestive system to heal and the inflammation to calm down.  Sort of like feeding a sick baby easy to digest food instead of spicy pizza.   It's important to get the inflammation down because chronic inflammation leads to other health problems.  Histamine is released as part of the autoimmune response to gluten.  High histamine levels make you feel bad and can cause breathing problems (worsening asthma), cardiovascular problems (tachycardia), and other autoimmune diseases (Hashimoto's thyroiditis, diabetes) and even mental health problems. Following the low histamine version of the AIP diet allows the body to clear the histamine from our bodies.  Some foods are high in histamine.  Avoiding these makes it easier for our bodies to clear the histamine released after a gluten exposure.   Vitamin D helps regulate the immune system and calm it down.  Vitamin D is frequently low in Celiacs.  The B Complex vitamins and Vitamin C are needed to clear histamine.   Supplementing with essential vitamins and minerals boosts your intestines' ability to absorb them while healing.   Keep in mind that gluten-free facsimile foods, like gluten-free bread, are not enriched with added vitamins like their gluten containing counterparts are.   They are empty calories, no nutritional value, which use up your B vitamins in order to turn the calories into fuel for the body to function.   Talk to your doctor or nutritionist about supplementing while healing.  Take a good B Complex and extra Thiamine in the form Benfotiamine (shown to promote gut health).  Most B Complex vitamins contain thiamine mononitrate which the body cannot utilize.  Meats and liver are good sources of B vitamins.   Dr. Sarah Ballantyne wrote the book, the Paleo Approach.  She's a Celiac herself.  Her book explains a lot.   I'm so glad you're feeling better and finding your balance!

So I should not eat my gluten free bread?  I will try the vitamins.  Thank you all so very much for your ideas and understanding.  I'm feeling better today and have gathered back my composure!

Some people prefer eating gluten before bed, then sleeping through the worst symptoms at night.  You might want to try that and see if that makes any difference.   Several slices of toast for breakfast sounds okay.  Just try to work up to the Ten grams of gluten.  Cookies might only have a half of a gram of gluten.  The weight of the whole cookie is not the same as the amount of gluten in it.  So do try to eat bread things with big bubbles, like cinnamon rolls.   Yeah, I'm familiar with the "death warmed over" feeling.  I hope you get the genetic test results quickly.  I despise how we have to make ourselves sick to get a diagnosis.  Hang in there, sweetie, the tribe is supporting you.

Thank you, a little expensive but glad to have this source.

@knitty kitty  Thank you very much for the advice. I did the exam this morning, my doctor actually suggested me to take something called "Celiac duo test" in which I first do the genetic test and if it's positive, then I'll have to do the antigen blood test. I have to attend 1 month until my results are ready, so I have some weeks to increase the amount of gluten I eat daily. It will be hard because my health is not the best right now, but I also did a blood test to cheek my nutritional deficiencies. The results will arrive on Tuesday, so I can ask my doctor what should I do to control my symptoms and blood levels during this month. For now I'm resting and paying attention to what I eat— at least I don’t look like a vampire who just woke up, like I did yesterday. I'm still scared because is the first time I've felt this sick, but this is the right moment to turn things around for the better.  I realized that if I eat gluten at lunch I cannot finish the day properly, I become severely tired and sometimes my stomach hurts a lot - let's not talk about the bloating that starts later. Do you think is it ok to eat gluten just in the morning, like some cookies and slices of bread for breakfast?
