Intestinal Parasites

I am sitting here waiting for my doc's office to call me back.

I think I may have an intestinal parasite, And I am freaking out

Has anyone been tested and treated for intestinal parasites?

My concern is my already compromised digestive track will not be able to handle the medication ( if the test comes back positive)

** sorry if this is in the wrong forum , I was not sure where to put it **

hope you get better soon... Usually with these little buggers you may feel worse at first on the med but it will kill it off.. Did doc say exactly what you had?

Yes she did ,it is a "common" parasite. On the up? side it is not something exotic that will be imposable to get rid off.

I started the medication . Everything I have read on the side effects say (to simplify) the meds make you really sick but to keep taking them unless you have a severe allergic reaction .

The main side effect of the medication : diarrhea and abdominal pain <_<

One of the concerns I have is with my liver issues I do not "process" medications well.I end up with an overdose because my body is not able to get the meds out of my body at a normal rate because of my reduced liver function .It is a crazy balancing act, take enough meds to get rid of them but not too much that I overdose.

Sorry , I guess I am just feeling sorry for my self, I am tried of "balancing acts" . Seems that is all I have done over the past few years. Thanks celiac <_<

I had Giardia (intestinal parasite) last summer and gawd it was a nightmare! I tried herbal stuff and that didnt work so i went to a doctor who prescribed me a medication called flagyl. I checked vigilantly with the pharmacy about it being gluten free, so that part was good but the medication was very hard on my system! Between that plus the damage of the parasite ono top of being celiac, it has been a hard recovery. Before getting the parasite after many years I had finally got my celiac under control for about 3 years... and was having normal/good bowel movements.

Whatever you do, don't stop parasite meds in the middle of taking them without talking to your doctor, as it makes the parasites very drug resistant and strong.... and you do not want that, it will be alot worse in the long run, then the week or so of yucky meds.

I feel for you, because I too am not good with pharma meds ( i get major liver distress too), the parasite med was the first i had taken from a doctor in 11 years... I hadnt taken any prescriptions since being diagnosed with celiac.

It might be helpful to know which common parasite it is, so you can understand what it does, and eat certain foods to help your recovery from it!

GOOD LUCK!

I don't know what kind of medication you're taking. Have you considered an herbal parasite cleanse? My doc asked me to use one in case I had any, but I was never tested for them. I took it for the recommended 12 days and didn't see any evidence of parasites. I never thought I had any in the first place, but the stuff I took was easy to take and didn't give me any side effects, and didn't taste bad either. If you want to check it out online as an option, it's called Paragone.

I'm also trying Kangan water to see if helps me to cleanse faster. I don't know what the outcome will be yet, but so far I do notice that when I drink it, my body seems to absorb it faster, and it makes my symptoms less severe right away. Nothing else did that before.

My doc is sending me a copy of the report so I will have the name/names I need to research what foods will help. Some pretty common ones have come up in my research so far, like onions and garlic,

What makes this doublely frustrating is I was doing so well.My gut had a significant amount of healing . I had successfully reintroduced many different foods that had been off limits in the past. Then I started having trouble and I though it was those reintroduced foods and I removed them from my diet. So now I feel like I am ,not back at square one thank god but close.

After healing from this I will have to reintroduce those foods AGAIN to see if was the parasite ,the damage they caused or the previously reintroduced foods causing the issues  frustrating at best <_<

I am wondering how long it will take my already compromised intestines to recover from this ??

I had entomoeba coli, which I was told usually isn't harmful with a healthy digestive system, but I didn't have a healthy system. I was treated with Tindamax for 3 days. I tolerated the med just fine. After taking it I felt like I had a boost of energy. It was surprising how much a little thing like a usually benign organism affected me.

When I picked up my RX the pharmacist said she had just filled another prescription for the same med, which is a rarely used medication. I jokingly said "huh..maybe there's something in the water". The pharmacist said that's very possible! :o

Soo..drink plenty of bottled water..and I hope you feel the amazing difference that I did.

Thanks guys :)

I completed the course of medication. That went (surprisingly) well. Other than a some ringing in my ears on the 2nd and 3rd day and some gut pain no major side effects .I drank lot of water and spaced the meds as far apart as I could ( to give my body time to "process" the meds out of my body) I am happy with the results.

@Bubba's mom , the difference is amazing :D

I am blown away with how much better I feel. I have more energy than I have had in months and my cheerful demeanor has returned ( much to the relief of my family :P )

HI Chilli,

Glad you are feeling better. I've read that DE (diatomaecous earth) is good for parasites. There are different kinds of DE, some are labeled for human consumption and some are not. So might eb something to think about as a naturla treatment. I've taken DE a few times to see if it had nay wonderful affects (the web sites make it sound glorius). I didn't notice anything different from taking it myself. But it is not a chemical in the sense of a drug, so if it does work it might be a good option. The if it does work part is something I am just not sure about though.

Since it has a mechanica/physiclal action and not a drug action it wouldn't affect your liver.

I'm SO glad the treatment has worked for you! It's hard for me to describe the feeling I had after my treatment. It was kind of like somebody flipped a switch and I suddenly had energy. :D

I've heard of Diatomaceouss Earth being used to kill garden slugs..but not parasites. I looked it up.

Might be worth getting some to take occasionally..as a "tonic"?

I know  I had been napping ( 2 to 3 hours ) most every day .

with the treatment one day I was napping the next day no nap and I cleaned my ENTIRE apt. :D

My special doctor tests everyone and finds a high percentage of positive results. She gives a gluten free diet for six weeks and no medication. No cereal at all and no dairy food, only natural food, egg, goat or sheep products and fruit and veg. She also give a natural over the counter satchel that cleans out the bowel first. It's so easy to pick them up and they live in so many people undetected I am told.

@Jane02, I hear you about the kale and collard greens.  I don't do dairy and must eat green leafies, too, to get sufficient calcium.  I must be very careful because some calcium supplements are made from ground up crustacean shells.  When I was deficient in Vitamin D, I took high doses of Vitamin D to correct the deficiency quickly.  This is safe and nontoxic.  Vitamin D level should be above 70 nmol/L.  Lifeguards and indigenous Pacific Islanders typically have levels between 80-100 nmol/L.   Levels lower than this are based on amount needed to prevent disease like rickets and osteomalacia. We need more thiamine when we're physically ill, emotionally and mentally stressed, and if we exercise like an athlete or laborer.  We need more thiamine if we eat a diet high in simple carbohydrates.  For every 500 kcal of carbohydrates, we need 500-1000 mg more of thiamine to process the carbs into energy.  If there's insufficient thiamine the carbs get stored as fat.  Again, recommended levels set for thiamine are based on minimum amounts needed to prevent disease.  This is often not adequate for optimum health, nor sufficient for people with absorption problems such as Celiac disease.  Gluten free processed foods are not enriched with vitamins like their gluten containing counterparts.  Adding a B Complex and additional thiamine improves health for Celiacs.  Thiamine is safe and nontoxic even in high doses.  Thiamine helps the mitochondria in cells to function.  Thiamine interacts with each of the other B vitamins.  They are all water soluble and easily excreted if not needed. Thank you so much @knitty kitty for this insightful information! I would have never considered fractionated coconut oil to be a potential source of GI upset. I will consider all the info you shared. Very interesting about the Thiamine deficiency.  I've tracked daily averages of my intake in a nutrition software. The only nutrient I can't consistently meet from my diet is vitamin D. Calcium is a hit and miss as I rely on vegetables, dark leafy greens as a major source, for my calcium intake. I'm able to meet it when I either eat or juice a bundle of kale or collard greens daily haha. My thiamine intake is roughly 120% of my needs, although I do recognize that I may not be absorbing all of these nutrients consistently with intermittent unintentional exposures to gluten.  My vitamin A intake is roughly 900% (~6400 mcg/d) of my needs as I eat a lot of sweet potato, although since it's plant-derived vitamin A (beta-carotene) apparently it's not likely to cause toxicity.  Thanks again!

Hello, @Jane02,  I take Naturewise D 3.  It contains olive oil.   Some Vitamin D supplements, like D Drops, are made with fractionated coconut oil which can cause digestive upsets.  Fractionated coconut oil is not the same as coconut oil used for cooking.  Fractionated coconut oil has been treated for longer shelf life, so it won't go bad in the jar, and thus may be irritating to the digestive system. I avoid supplements made with soy because many people with Celiac Disease also react to soy.  Mixed tocopherols, an ingredient in Thornes Vitamin D, may be sourced from soy oil.  Kirkland's has soy on its ingredient list. I avoid things that might contain or be exposed to crustaceans, like Metagenics says on its label.  I have a crustacean/shellfish/fish allergy.  I like Life Extension Bioactive Complete B Complex.  I take additional Thiamine B 1 in the form Benfotiamine which helps the intestines heal, Life Extension MegaBenfotiamine. Thiamine is needed to activate Vitamin D.   Low thiamine can make one feel like they are getting glutened after a meal containing lots of simple carbohydrates like white rice, or processed gluten free foods like cookies and pasta.   It's rare to have a single vitamin deficiency.  The water soluble B Complex vitamins should be supplemented together with additional Thiamine in the form Benfotiamine and Thiamine TTFD (tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide) to correct subclinical deficiencies that don't show up on blood tests.  These are subclinical deficiencies within organs and tissues.  Blood is a transportation system.  The body will deplete tissues and organs in order to keep a supply of thiamine in the bloodstream going to the brain and heart.   If you're low in Vitamin D, you may well be low in other fat soluble vitamins like Vitamin A and Vitamin K. Have you seen a dietician?

I do not know this, but since they are labelled gluten-free, and are not really a product that could easily be contaminated when making them (there would be not flour in the air of such a facility, for example), I don't really see contamination as something to be concerned about for this type of product.
