Can All This Be Celiac?

Hi all, I'm about to go for allergy testing sept11th and need advice on what to test. Here is why I'm going for tests and also what tests ive had done to me. A brief history of my 36 years is I've always had heartburn. I have a very touchy stomach and am a large consumer of Zantac and tums. My event started march 3rd, I woke up with a massive chest tightness.I equated it to weightlifting since I do that 6 times a week. I started taking lots of supplement shakes in January/ feb/ march. This chest tightness left but was replaced with major back pain due to knots in my muscles upper back. Then my neck started to get stiff and tense and then finally jaw tension. (not pain but tension) . I then in June started a post nasal drip clear mucus no infection. I also had more acid reflux than normal .I cut out alcohol, sugar and junk. My stomach seemed to feel a lot better, muscles also seemed much less tense. Can it be that all those supplement shakes finally acted as the last drop before the glass spilled over? And compounded an already pre existing allergy like gluten? The tests I've had so far are ( MRI spine, MRI shoulder, gastroscopy and pylori biopsy negative, 7 x rays, 6 full blood work tests,2 urine, EKG on heart, tmj specialist that said my muscles are tense but no bite problems , ENT specialist that said sinuses were swollen shut and hence post nasal drip). So my gp says it's anxiety??? Which seems like bs excuse because I'm not anxious at all except to find out what the hell is wrong with me . So now I'm at the stage of going for allergy testing since my doc doesn't see cancer as a posability or other right now. Opinions?

Ask for a full Celiac Panel blood test.

All of your symptoms are consistent with Celiac.

It is an autoimmune disease and allergy testing won't pick it up.

If they don't agree to test you, go gluten free and see if it helps.

I know how miserable it is to want answers and not be able to get them.

I hope you will feel better soon.

Yes, that is what I did to. I made my doctor take the celiac blood test. I am tired of wondering what is wrong with me to! My trouble is that I don't think my doc will take it any farther after blood tests results come in good or bad. So, I may just have to wing it and go gluten free without diagnosis. What to do what to do.....

Thanks for the answers I appreciate them all. Im glad to have read that my symptoms fall into the celiac symptoms. Since allergy testing won't discover this :( I'm upset to hear that. I'll get them done anyways just in case and I'll have to schedule an appointment with gp to get the right tests. One last question, how long should one go gluten free before seeing a difference???

Some people can tell an immediate difference like in a matter of days they are certain this was their problem. Others take more like months and really can't tell much difference and go through a bad time with withdrawal symptoms where they feel absolutely lousy on going gluten free. Others take more like years to recover. But even long term undiagnosed Celiac is possible to recover from. It can take up to two years to regain full health, depending on how long you have been ill. It took me one week to know for sure this was it. My headaches went away and I had a little more energy. But the full recovery took 2 years. I was sick for 7 years though. My son, being a teen recovered in about 6 months. He seemed to be fully healed and functioning without symptoms unless he got trace gluten. It varies widely as you can see. Some people have to go through secondary intolerances such as dairy, corn, soy, nightshades etc. If this is part of your problem, it takes a while to figure it all out.

Good luck with the testing, I hope this helps.

Hi Colleen Are you supplementing B12/having injections? I have learned recently that sometimes when you start addressing a B12 deficiency, it can temporarily make your symptoms worse.  But it is important not to stop the treatment.  Regarding your problems with anxiety, again that is another symptom of a B12 deficiency.   I didn't know what anxiety was until it hit me like a train several months before gastrointestinal issues began, so I can certainly relate.   Two books which helped me hugely were At Last A Life by Paul David (there is a website you can look up) and The Depression Cure: The Six-Step Programme to Beat Depression Without Drugs by Dr Steve Llardi.  Although his book is aimed at people who have depression, following the principals he sets out was so helpful in lessening my anxiety.  Llardi suggests we need to focus on getting enough: - physical exercise - omega-3 fatty acids - natural sunlight exposure - restorative sleep - social connectedness - meaningful, engaging activity   ... and we should feel a lot better. That is not to stay you must stop taking medication for depression or anxiety if you have been prescribed it, but adopting the changes Dr Llardi sets out in the book should really help. Can I just ask two more questions:  1) you say that you are B12 deficient, did they test your iron levels too?  If not, you really ought to be checked for deficiency and, 2) did they check your thyroid function, as an overactive thyroid can be cause rapid heartbeat and a lot of coeliacs have thyroid issues? Hello still dancing around my celiac disease and not getting medically backed up considering Ive been glutenfree since 1994.All my ailments are the core issue of my ghost disease aka celiac disease. Im angery because the "celiac specialist " basically lightly dismissed me.Im extremely angery and fighting for a new primary care physician which is hard to do in Northern Cali.So currently without and looking.Im angery that its lightly taken when its extremely serious to the one who has it.My only evidence is a brochure back in the days when I got news letters when I lived at my parents. It was published in 1998.I was diagnosed before any foods eliminated from my diet. Angery doctors don't take seriously when Im clearly speaking.I did write to the medicine of congress and have case number.

I totally get this. It's absolutely a grieving process, and it's okay to feel gutted about the loss of those simple joys, especially at 18. Your feelings are completely valid—it's not about being ungrateful for your amazing boyfriend, it's about mourning the life you thought you'd have. That "tortured by the smell" feeling is so real. It does get easier, I promise, but it's okay to sit in the sadness and just vent about how much it stings right now. Thanks for sharing that. Celiac.com has published a book on our site by Jean Duane PhD called Gluten-Centric Culture, which covers many of the social aspects of having celiac disease: This chapter in particular covers issues around eating with family and others - Gluten-Centric Culture: Chapter 5 - Grabbing A Bite Together:
