Hi,

I have eaten at two different Indian restaurants recently, and got sick afterward. I'm a vegetarian, so their menus are quite attractive. Being new to this, I always forget to ask if they use flour as a thickener. Does anyone know if Indian restaurants use a lot of flour to thicken?

I'm trying to pin down what caused me to get sick, and this is the only thing I can think of.

I think you would have to ask what they put in their food. I eat a lot of vegetarian food, and quite often I eat out at this one Indian restaurant, in particular. The stuff that I always order is gluten-free...but other things may not be. I know that indian foods use a lot of chickpea flour in their recipies (at the the foods that I have eaten), so that is great... they batter a lot of stuff in chick pea flour if they deep fry, as well...I have never had problems at this one place I go to. I always make sure to ask, though. I also know that the dosas they make are made with bean flour and and most of their soups are thickened with lentils or other gluten-free ingredients. Yum!

Hi,

I'm veggie too and used to love eating at Indian restaurants. Now I get sick every time - so I no longer eat there. I also stopped buying indian spices and products from the indian stores. My own suspicion is that their spices are cut with flour as an anti-caking agent. And anything fried is right out, because of bread-goods being fried too.

It might just be me and not being able to digest anything spicy, or maybe a particular spice allergy. Or it could be something else. But I have tried more than a few places in LA and San Francisco and had bad luck. Maybe I hadn't been gluten-free long enough at the time to really know what to ask for. But i haven't been back to an indian restaurant in well over a year now....and I've thrown out my own supply of turmeric, garam masala, etc....

Hi,

In case you decide not to risk it at a restaurant, Amy's Organic (I think that is the brand name) makes veggie indian food and will specifically label their products as gluten-free. However, I don't know what their policy is on contamination.

      Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye.
