Need Some Help - In Pain And Discouraged.

Back in the beginning of August, I saw a gyn. and she told me that since I had mucus with my stool and mucus on it's on after a stool that I just HAD to have ibs and not celiac. I was tested for celiac before and my test was inconclusive b/c I wasn't eating gluten at the time. I was diagnosed on my symptoms and improvement on the gluten free diet.

Anyway, to make a long story short, I went on this ibs diet that the gyn gave me. It basically involved a bunch of gluten like noodles and breads and plain and bland foods. I was ok and I use ok lightly for a few weeks but then I started having horrible knife stabbing low abdominal pain, cramps, gas and d mixed with c. and a lot of mucus. I sometimes will get mucus discharge on it's own when I have the terrible lower gut pain. I was getting migraines and bad joint pain and muscle weakness.

I went to another doctor for a lupus test b/c my Grandma died from lupus. I was getting night sweats and running a low grade fever for a few weeks. They ran my blood work and it all came back fine with the exception of elevated liver enzymes.

I went back on the gluten free diet last week on Thursday. My joint pain, headaches and muscle pain is gone. The cold sores on my lips have cleared up and I have a lot more energy. The only thing that is persisting is the gut pain and the mucus discharge from the rectum. It hurts pretty badly.

Anyone have any advice for me? I am so sick of being in pain and now I am worried about my liver enzymes.

Thanks - MO

Hey Mo! Looks like you have your answer! You are having great improvement with the gluten-free diet.

It is possible to have IBS and Celiac. The way I understand " real" IBS ( not the " I Be Stumped version") is that the large intestine spasms causing it not to work properly. I would wait before trying any of those meds tho. I bet this mucous will go away with a gluten free diet. I'm sure the stress of moving to a new place didn't help either.

Thanks Karen. I really hope that the mucus goes away b/c I can't stand it. The mix of constantly running the the bathroom thinking that I have to go and all I get is mucus and the elevated liver enzymes is ticking me off.

Moving did not help at all. It's pretty lonely here. My husband is working all the time and we don't know anyone. We left our house that I just loved and now we are in a rental townhome and since I am not feeling well at all, it's just making me depressed.

IBS is a symptom for a lot of conditions, celiac included.

i don't doubt that you have celiac or at the very least NCGI (both are sooo similar, with the exception of gut damage). If gluten free works for ya, go for it.

I have had mucous, and other things,,((((too much to say here))) :D But, I found that if you are having troubles...and they get a bit better...You are on to a *good thing*...gluten-free is one of them........ So many problems with gut problems--but try gluten-free one step at a time...You will be amazed in time....(A very smart gluten-free Forum Friend said it can take 6 - 12 *MONTHS* before you see a significant difference!...\

Quite honestly, I freeeeeeeeeeeked out at this..... but it has been 6 months for me......I am *much Better ya see*? :D

So haaaanng in there............. It gets easier......and ya feel feel *Better* in some time............. (Honestly, I did not realize how much better I felt until my family confirmed it! (It's true) One small step at a time, OK? One small gluten-free bite at a time... Tell me how you are doing, OK? ;)

You might try Heallix.  It's a silver solution with fulvic acid. I just put the solution on with a cotton ball.  It seemed to stop the nerve pain. Again,  not in your eyes or ears.   Go to heallix.com to read more about it and decide for yourself Also,  I do think nerve and celiac combined have a lot to do with your susceptibility to shingles breaking out.

Celiac disease requires both genetic potential and a triggering stress event to activate the genes. Otherwise it remains dormant and only a potential problem. So having the genetic potential is not deterministic for celiac disease. Many more people have the genes than actually develop the disease. But if you don't have the genes, the symptoms are likely being caused by something else.

Yes, i pulled raw ancetry data and saw i have 2/3 markers for DQ2.2 but have heard from friends in genetics that this raw data can be wildly innacurate

Thanks, I’m still dealing with the pain and tingling and itching and feeling like bugs or something crawling around on my face and scalp. It’s been a miserable experience. I saw my eye doc last week, the eye itself was okay, so they didn’t do anything. I did take a 7 day course of an antiviral. I’m hoping for a turnaround soon! My life is full of stress but I have been on / off the gluten free diet for the last year , after being talked into going back on gluten to have a biopsy, that looked okay. But I do have positive antibody levels that have been responsive  to a gluten free diet. I can’t help but wonder if the last year has caused all this.

I don't think any apps are up to date, which is exactly why this happened to you. Most of the data in such apps is years old, and it doesn't get updated in real time. Ultimately there is no substitution for learning to read labels. The following two lists are very helpful for anyone who is gluten sensitive and needs to avoid gluten when shopping. It's very important to learn to read labels and understand sources of hidden gluten, and to know some general information about product labelling--for example in the USA if wheat is a possible allergen it must be declared on a product's ingredient label like this: Allergens: Wheat.
