Gluten Free Class At Giant

There is a new Giant (Camp Hill, I believe) that is offering all sorts of cooking classes and seminars. There is one starting in November for gluten free cooking/baking! It is a three week course, and I believe its offered on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, both day and evening. One week they even do a "gluten free tour of the store" type thing. They also go over some basics, and do some cooking. There is a different theme for each week and it is FREE! But, I think you have to register.

Laura,

Do you have any contact info for that? I'm so proud of my local Giant - they're finally starting their own little "gluten-free" section! Camp Hill isn't too far from me... Thanks for sharing!

That sure gives me hope!!!! Won't it be nice when celiac disease is recognized as much as diabetes is? :D

And for all of us who don't have Giant (I used to live in upstate NY so I know which chain you are talking about) could you give us an outline of what your mom learned? Thanks. :)

I'd like to clarify: Is the pain you describe in the area just below your chest constant, or does it only appear when you start moving?

Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute. If you are interested in summaries of scientific publications on the topic of oats and celiac disease, we have an entire category dedicated to it which is here: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/oats-and-celiac-disease-are-they-gluten-free/
