Been Really Sick Tonight :-(

We went out earlier today and chose tonight's food SO carefully...

But for some reason, I was violently sick afterwards.

We had steak marinaded in a tamari sauce (gluten free / wheat free, purchased from a very well known USA health food store) sauteed vegetables in olive oil and mashed Idaho potatoes.

Can anyone see any issues with what I ate tonight?

My girlfriend and I sat down after I had recovered and went through every item that we bought and checked the ingredients but cannot find anything at all that may have affected me like it did...... very confused.

Only been diagnosed 10 days but seriously struggling with this change in diet already... still losing an inch a week from my waistline and now lost 58 pounds since late January......

Hiya Scott,

This happened to me the other day..

I sure hope you are feeling better by now!

Anyways, I put it down to cross contamination to the utensils/grill used. Today my Dad is bringing me up my own mini grill/oven to use that no one else can use, just to cook my foods on.

It was cooked on the George Foreman and that has only even been used to cook unseasoned meat on, plus was well washed in a dishwasher before hand.

Everything gets washed in the dishwasher so that it is done at a hot temperature and all the worktops were bleached earlier today and no products containing gluten have touched the surfaces either.

It is totally bewildering as I was so careful.

Just a thought, but maybe it's something other than gluten. Soy makes me really nauseous, and dairy gives me headaches. It sounds like you gave the gluten-free part due dilligence.

I did contemplate the soy aspect as the Tamari Sauce has a soy content although it does state that it is organic, gluten free and wheat free. Soy milk (Silk) is staying down well though.

Back to the drawing board I guess.

The steak...was it fresh or was it frozen? It took me three months to figure out that the frozen chiken I was grilling had been frozen in a broth. The broth solution made me sick, and the company told me it was safe...not so!

I had a few episodes like you are describing during these first few weeks...after double and triple checking what I had eaten it remained a mystery. I've also had some extremely bad evenings with severe joint paint...this has always been a symptom for me...but not as bad. Anyway, the past few days I have been feeling stronger and am hoping it is all part of the healing process...been on gluten for nearly 44 years...might take a while for my system to adjust.

I've chosen to eliminate only gluten for 3 months, then look for other allergies...reason being is sometimes I have difficulty digesting a certain item, but then I try it again and I am fine.

How are you feeling now?

I was toild to stay clear from Soy also...hence sticking to plain meats and salad so far!!!

About a month into being Gluten and Dairy Free I realized I wasn't getting accidently glutened and there must be another issue. For me it was Soy. Soy affects me the same way gluten does as far a cramps, bloating, and the Big D. So my next elimination was soy. Also, did you use milk and butter in your mashed potatos. I had to remove dairy immedately into the diet.

At 10 days you are still new at this but it sounds like you've got the searching for hidden gluten down. You may find that for a while till your gut heals that you will have to remove some other foods that are hard for your system to digest.

Storm, could nightshades be a problem for you? Potatoes, tomatoes, bell peppers etc? Also, which veggies were you making. Some of us have veggie issues. Also, I recently found out I had an allgery to olives (olive oil), so there might be a need for a elimination diet and a food journal.

Went and tried PF Changs gluten free menu today and was slightly disappointed with the options I chose, but there are plenty more there to try so I have not given up hope.

The waiter was very knowledgeable about products etc and changed over the soy sauce for an alternative.

He specified to the kitchen that they had a gluten free customer and every dish that was brought out, was served as "Gluten free (dish) for you sir".

The Moo Goo Gai Pan was nice but tasteless along with the egg drop soup. It was nice, but not very tasty, I assume I will have to suffer this with certain meals I order?

My girlfriend ordered the Phillips Better Lemon Chicken (also gluten free) which was very nice! Wish I had ordered that now!!

I am trying the Olive Garden mixed grill tonight (which is from the gluten free menu), so fingers crossed!!

Thank you all for your advice and help so far, it is SO reassuring that I am not alone by a long way. I return to the UK on Friday, and I can feel an uphill battle starting as I have not eaten gluten free in the UK yet as I flew to the USA on the day I was diagnosed just over 2 weeks ago!

I am sure it will be fine, but with the help and support I have had so far, I should be OK. :rolleyes:

Hiya Scott,

I'm really glad you had a better meal ( even if not as tasty ) tonight. I must admit I'm bored with the plain stuff but I'm playing safe at the moment, as 1, enjoying not being ill, and 2, book not arrived yet so not got a clue about lables! :blink:

I can appreciate you being nervous about coming home but this forum stays with you whether you are in the USA or the UK :D What you have been eating sounds gorgeous though!

When first starting the diet, your gut will be healing (if you can stay off the gluten) and that can be a little rough period. I had gut spasms for the first month or so after going gluten-free. It is a big change and your body needs to adjust. As you go along if you are careful about what you eat you can learn things that cause a reaction. Easting out is always a risk, even at gluten-free places. If you were home Storm I'd suggest eliminating all the things you ate that day you got sick and then adding them back to your diet, one item every other day. Then you might detect the specific food that affected you. But it seems like people have a hard time with lots of things at first, and I think that is because of the changes going on in their system. Healing, gut flora changes, etc etc.. Stick with it and it does get easier!

By the way, Outback Steakhouse has a gluten-free menu, and so does Bonefish Grill. I did ok at an Outback once, but haven't tried Bonefish grill.

Have found that Waitrose supermarkets in the UK do over 2300 gluten free items so I will be shopping there when I get home!!!

      oh that's interesting... it's hard to say for sure but it has *seemed* like oats might be causing me some vague issues in the past few months. It's odd that I never really connect specific symptoms to foods, it's more of an all over feeling of unwellness after  eating them.  If it happens a few times after eating the same foods- I cut back or avoid them. for this reason I avoid dairy and eggs.  So far this has worked well for me.  oh, I have some of Bob's Red Mill Mighty Tasty Hot cereal and I love it! it's hard to find but I will be looking for more.  for the next few weeks I'm going to be concentrating on whole fresh fruits and veggies and beans and nuts and seeds. I'll have to find out if grains are truly necessary in our diet. I buy brown rice pasta but only eat that maybe once a month at most. Never liked quinoa. And all the other exotic sounding grains seem to be time consuming to prepare. Something to look at later. I love beans and to me they provide the heft and calories that make me feel full for a lot longer than a big bowl of broccoli or other veggies. I can't even tolerate the plant milks right now.  I have reached out to the endo for guidance regarding calcium intake - she wants me to consume 1000mgs from food daily and I'm not able to get to more than 600mgs right now.  not supposed to use a supplement until after my next round of testing for hyperparathyroidism.   thanks again- you seem to know quite a bit about celiac.

      Welcome to the celiac.com community, @SilkieFairy! You could also have NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity) as opposed to celiac disease. They share many of the same symptoms, especially the GI ones. There is no test for NCGS. Celiac disease must first be ruled out.

      Under the circumstances, your decision to have the testing done on day 14 sounds very reasonable. But I think by now you know for certain that you either have celiac disease or NCGS and either way you absolutely need to eliminate gluten from your diet. I don't think you have to have an official diagnosis of celiac disease to leverage gluten free service in hospitals or institutional care and I'm guessing your physician would be willing to grant you a diagnosis of gluten sensitivity (NCGS) even if your celiac testing comes up negative. Also, you need to be aware that oats (even gluten free oats) is a common cross reactor in the celiac community. Oat protein (avenin) is similar to gluten. You might want to look at some other gluten free hot  breakfast cereal alternatives.

      After the birth of my daughter nearly 6 years ago, my stools changed. They became thin if they happened to be solid (which was rare) but most of the time it was Bristol #6 (very loose and 6-8x a day). I was on various medications and put it down to that. A few years later I went on this strict "fruit and meat" diet where I just ate meat, fruit, and squash vegetables. I noticed my stools were suddenly formed, if a bit narrow. I knew then that the diarrhea was probably food related not medication related. I tried following the fodmap diet but honestly it was just too complicated, I just lived with pooping 8x a day and wondering how I'd ever get and keep a job once my children were in school.  This past December I got my yearly bloodwork and my triglycerides were high. I looked into Dr. William Davis (wheat belly author) and he recommended going off wheat and other grains. This is the first time in my life I was reading labels to make sure there was no wheat. Within 2 weeks, not only were my stools formed and firm but I was only pooping twice a day, beautiful formed Bristol #4.  Dr. Davis allows some legumes, so I went ahead and added red lentils and beans. Nervous that the diarrhea would come back if I had IBS-D. Not only did it not come back, it just made my stools even bigger and beautiful. Still formed just with a lot more width and bulk. I've also been eating a lot of plant food like tofu, mushrooms, bell peppers, hummus etc which I thought was the cause of my diarrhea before and still, my stools are formed. In January I ran a genetics test because I knew you had to have the genes for celiac. The report came back with  DQ 2.2 plus other markers that I guess are necessary in order for it to be possible to have celiac. Apparently DQ 2.2 is the "rarer" kind but based on my report it's genetically possible for me to have celiac.  I know the next step is to bring gluten back so I can get testing but I am just not wanting to do that. After suffering with diarrhea for years I can't bring myself to do it right now. So that is where I am!

      learned I had a high PTH level in 2022 suspected to be due to low vit D  got my vit D level up a bit but still have high PTH   I am 70 yrs old (today in fact) I am looking for someone who also has hyperparathyroidism that might be caused by malabsorption
