  1. i usually just mix and match with whatever ingredients I'm craving/have around, so here are a collection of things I've mixed in (not all at once, of course) for inspiration: celery, celery seed, mayo, dijon mustard, grapes, curry powder, peanuts, bacon, avocado, water chestnuts, lemon juice (always), and raisins. I find myself trying out a new combo...
  2. Currently I'm taking Florazyme, which I think helps, but it's a little hard to tell. Anyone have any gluten-free enzymes that they really like? Thanks....
  3. i recommend Phazyme for gas. the soft gels are gluten-free and they've helped me a ton.
  4. i have found that people do have a tendency to want to talk about it A LOT when they find out one's illness. It's fine because it's just curiousity and interest, and as said, it's good to educate. But sometimes I don't want to have the same conversation 5 times in one day. I find it's helpful after a few minutes to say "you know I'd love to just relax and...
  5. delphi lists all vlasic varietes as gluten-free. just had some today. not sure bout caines...
  6. are there specific ingredients that you all ask about when going to Thai places that are traditional to the cuisine that you tell them to avoid? Other than soy sauce of course. I miss real Thai (and chinese) so much, and the Thai Kitchen stuff can only go so far.
  7. it short - yes, you can drink too much water. It can screw up your system, and actually cause symptoms akin to intoxication, but I've always been told it takes ridiculously large amounts of water to do that. However, 6 Litres is pretty close to ridiculously large. You may want to ask your PCP about it...
  8. I asked my doctor last week about Candida, as all my symptoms seem to match. He said exactly what I expected him to say "it's not a real illness". He's a really nice guy, and has encouraged me to stick with a gluten-free diet despite negative bloods, but said candida could not overgrow and make someone sick in the way some sources suggest. But he followed...
  9. yes, it's certainly possible to have it and not test positively. You KNOW however that you have h. pylori, so I would treat that first and see where you stand afterwards. I believe that can be kicked with a couple weeks of antibiotics, which is a lot better than a lifetime of no wheat. So I'd wait to see if you're still sick before comitting to gluten free...
  10. Just got off the phone with them again because I've been sick lately and thought perhaps Halls were the cause. She said again categorically all flavors all varieties of halls were gluten-free. She said infact they always had been, but they just got new information from their "regulatory commission" verifying the whole line. She also said they would soon be...
  11. fyi - i'd be wary of a "home celiac test". I can't imagine any way that would actually work -- unless it something you're sending to a lab afterwards...
  12. I know it's probably crazy to ask, but anyone risk getting lunch from a salad bar? Salad from Wholefoods used to be my favorite lunch, and they do keep the veggies segregated from the prepared foods that are loaded with various wheats. I know there's a fairly solid risk of CC, but anyone give it a try?
  13. sorbitol is bad stuff. It doesn't have any gluten elements, but it's a gastric irritant of the first rate. It's used often as a sweetener for chewable medicines and candies, but it's main side effect (or purpose when used in laxatives) is drawing a great deal of water into the intestinal tract. That of course can cause problems. It's not a major deal for...
  14. a bit off topic -- gfp, from what you said it sounded like raisins could be a gluten problem? Or am I misreading?
  15. jenn - i totally agree, breakfast is the hardest part. Pretty hard to grab some scrambled eggs and go. Some non-cooking suggestions: -Foods by George makes a great cumb cake that's essentially a classic coffee cake. Available on line and at wholefoods. They also do great english muffins. -A lot of the gluten-free bread companies make cinnamon raisin...
  16. guy's perspective: he's not going to care. honestly. Guys don't like girls who are afraid to eat because they feel grapes will make them fat, but beyond that, you're in the clear. I wouldn't use the phrase "food issues", it sounds more mental than physical. I also don't think you even need to call him in advance. If you don't make it into a big deal, it won...
  17. I had a GI say the same thing to me, even though the gluten-free diet was the only thing that helped me. Then a week later I saw a PCP who said "Don't listen to other doctors. Do what makes you feel better." It's good advice. I followed it and I'm happy I did. You should definitely go in for the colonscopy as there could be other problems lurking, but if...
  18. hey there, i'm not dairy free, and in fact have been having a lot more dairy lately, as it is one of the few gluten-free things I really enjoy. But I know it's a possible irritant. I've not eliminated it because I've never noticed any causal relationship with it and my pains. I can eat a pint of ice cream and they are no better or worse. But maybe if i cut...
  19. most of the Applegate Farms cold cuts are labeled as gluten and casein free. They're organic, so not cheap, and some varieties aren't that tasty in fact, but at least they're safe.
  20. wait, i'm not totally following. So does this mean that any products made recently enough to follow the new labeling laws will almost certainly have no hidden wheat sources? If what the above states, it's possible for non-wheat glutens to be used but very unlikely, is correct, then does that mean we can look for "allergens: wheat" and be safe if we don't...
  21. Also, a lot of the Lays "Baked" varieties have wheat while their non-baked, "normal" counterparts are gluten free. No idea why, but seems to be the case. Another fine reason to stick with the fried goodness of regular chips.
  22. Hello all. I've been on the gluten-free diet nearly two months now and am feeling a great deal of improvement. The one thing that hasn't gone away at all though is the abdominal pain. What bothers me most is I have no idea what it is. It feel like someone inflated a few long balloons and stuck them in various places in my stomach and pelvis. The most logical...
  23. people have been having CC issues with the Amy's food. Could be that.
  24. good question. i hadn't thought about old product lying around, although it wasn't clear whether they had actually changed the content of their drops or just gotten around to completely verifying their gluten-free-ness. Anyway, they have expiration dates, so look for the ones that are furthest away, they'd be the newest. Oh, by starter kit I meant the...
