  1. yeah, too much magnesium i think will make itself pretty clear. If it starts working, uh, too well, you'll know to pull back a bit.
  2. I have to second this. Eating my first bowl of Bionaturae right now and IMHO it blows Tinkyada out of the water. I like Tinkyada ok, but I agree with the first poster, it always a little mushy to me. And I've tried everything from way undercooking to way over, and it always is too soft. This Bionaturae is truly al dente and tastes great. I feel the difference...
  3. hey, this is very interesting. I just made my first batch of Pamela's Amazing Sandwhich bread in my mixer, and I think I've been reacting to it. Not a full-fledged blow, but I've been having some pain, and a noticeable difference in BMs. I thought maybe I was reacting to the eggs in it, as they are the one new ingredient in the mix that I don't often eat...
  4. I got this email from Loreal today. The following list of ingredients that are used in our products, are those that contain wheat and other grains. This list may also be used by the celiac patient to identify gluten-containing ingredients. This list gives the standard industry names for ingredients as found in the International Cosmetic Ingredient Dictionary...
  5. It just so happens that I know the owners of this company. Old high school friend. It's a great restaurant idea, and I've been meaning to mention to them how they should include Celiac-friendly items. I'm gonna email now and tell about the ridiculous information they're disseminating.
  6. Yep, I did. As I mentioned in another post, got sick when I went home. Still not sure what it was, but I know my Mom was accidentally cooking with tainted chicken broth, so who knows what else got through. I'm thinking maybe it was some defrosted Shrimp Cocktail that wasn't 100% pure shrimp.
  7. no offense taken. Your reading was apt - they aren't my definitions at all, just a very strict medical reading i got from my sister, who is a very strict, by the book physician. But it should be understood that they don't take "untrue" allergic reactions lightly, or necessarily with any less care than you or I would like, it's just terminology they use to...
  8. pardon me if i'm getting a few of the details wrong, but i've heard the allergy discussion many times from my doctor sister - i'll pass on what i remember. Feel free to disregard if not helpful or it turns out I'm mis-translating/understanding. Sounds like you had what doctors consider a "true" allergic reaction, meaning that without medical intervention...
  9. yeah, it's almost harder because they're trying. If they were just being uncaring or unimpressed with the illness I could say "screw them", but it's more that they're just not grasping the severity and complexity of it. My mom asked if she bought a ham that wasn't gluten free if she could just boil off the gluten. Obviously preposterous to us, but I could...
  10. thanks shirley. actually the new lady is gluten intorelant too, which was an amazing coincidence - but I think she's more of a "it makes me feel better when I do" rather than "if i don't i'll be unbearably sick for a week", which is me. But at least she understands the difficulties, so that helps.
  11. Hey all, had a crummy night last night and just wanted to share it with people who know the drill, thanks for listening. After my fourth or fifth trip home to my parent's house since being gluten-free, I have realized that basically I can't go there without getting sick. There are just too many variables: non-safe cookware, unclean surfaces, well-intentioned...
  12. Yes, I sleep late on the weekend and was doing so over the holiday, getting more sleep that I needed, but at the same time found without fail that each time I slept in, my stomach was a mess all day. I am definitely considering waking at 8 am everyday and going through the exact same medication and food schedule to make things easier for my body - even though...
  13. I've been finding that regardless of my diet and activities, my stomach seems to be much more tempermental on mornings where I sleep past 9am. Any chance this happens to anyone else? There is a chance other factors are contributing, as my various medicine and meal schedules get thrown off by starting my day later, but for the most part it seems to be only...
  14. The best bread I have found for purchase by far are Gillian's Rolls. They're casein-free as well as being gluten-free, and honestly, they taste just like regular bread to me. If you order direct from the website, they're about $6.50 per dozen, which isn't too pricey. I've tried a lot of other varieties I've seen recommended here, and frankly haven't been...
  15. I've posted a few times about Enterolab in the past, and I won't repeat myself, but I think anyone who tells you it is more certain than a leap of faith is incorrect. They may have taken that leap and been convinced, but there's just no independant hard facts about it's accuracy. That being said, I tested with them, got high numbers, and feel better after...
  16. I eat a lot of cold cuts. I believe about 99% of Boar's Head are gluten-free (they have info on their website), but I don't eat deli counter stuff because of CC concerns. Oscar Meyer makes a pretty good "deli-style" variety that will label any allergens - so far I have yet to find any. Also Sara Lee and Hillshire Farms will label, and the Hormel Naturals...
  17. jerry i believe somewhere on the Enterolab site it says at least 1/2 cup for the specimen. You may want to double check though. Obviously the worst thing would be to send them something and have them say it wasn't enough....
  18. In short, no. You can't be sure. There has been no peer-testing of his methods. But a lot of his patients swear by enterolab. So, it's a bit of a toss up. I would add however that there aren't a whole lot of medical tests that you can be completely certain about.
  19. I've been gluten-free for about 5 months and get sick every each time I've tried to drink. I eventually just gave up. I don't miss it that much, so I haven't really experimented with different varieties. Alcohol in general is very bad for your digestive system, so I'm planning to avoid it entirely, until I feel so good that one bad day won't bother me much...
  20. my understanding with blood test was - and it sounds like others are certainly better informed - that 98% of those who tested positive for Celiac Disease in fact had it. So, the test is considered reliable because of the only 2% false positives. But obviously, that's not very reassuring.
  21. While I agree about the benefits of the gluten-free diet, to suggest that doctors won't diagnose because they'll stop making money off us is fairly prepostorous. Obviously, there are a few bad apples, and many people have negative experiences, but doctors are for the most part interested in genuinely helping their patients.
  22. Wow, Zig Zags contain gluten. Never woulda thought of that. Anyone know about Bamboo papers? I use them at times. I'm a regular smoker and have found it having zero effect either way on my GI symptoms. I have heard in several places however that it is oddly beneficial for everything from IBS to IBD's to Celiac. Not that that's what keeping me on them, but...
  23. Apparently it's called Redbridge, and is not supposed to hit the shelves until Jan '07, but anyone who gets it earlier, let us know how it goes!
  24. Hey everyone, just wanted to post my first dining out success story of my gluten-free life. Because I'm visiting the folks for thanksgiving, I haven't been able been able to prepare my own meals, which I've been doing for essentially every morsel of food eaten since March. So I helped my mom prepare a Gluten-free Casein-free thanksgiving on thursday, which...
  25. sorry. just to clarify - no, she said even a healthy, non-celiac body has to relearn digesting gluten if it's been off it for a while. Obviously, a celiac or gluten-intolerant system won't get used it no matter what.
