  1. I was told by Dr. Lee from the Columbia Celiac Center that you will, or can, get sick when returning to gluten after being gluten-free for a long period of time. She said it's very important to ease back into it slowly, as it's hard to digest even for people who tolerate it fine, and your body needs to relearn. So it could be that, or it could be that you...
  2. i know that gillian's foods makes a Gluten-free Casein-free mix, and I believe Gluten-Free Bakehouse does as well. I'm trying Gillian's for the first time this year, so can't vouch for their quality. Both are available on internet only though...
  3. Entirely in MY OPINION, I would say if you began a gluten-free diet tomorrow it would take you about 2 months (based on my experience) to figure it all out and get all the gluten actually out of your diet and lifestyle. I would say if you devote yourself to gluten-free living for 6 months after that and see zero improvement, then gluten might not be an issue...
  4. Alice, while I do not agree with ursula's statment saying that it has been shown enterolab is always right (in my opinion the verdict is still out), I will say that combining your chronic health problems with these test results suggest to me that you should give the gluten-free lifestyle a prolonged shot. Essentially, what have you got to lose? The...
  5. Ricola's gluten statement is probably CYA, but venture at your own risk. Halls claims that 100% of their products are gluten-free. Some people have had some problems with them though, so again, at your own risk. I can say for certain that Luden's cough drops are fine, but their medicinal properties are somewhat questionable...
  6. absolutely. the hardest thing for me has been so many random flare-ups making me feel like I'm just as sick off gluten as I was when I was eating it daily. In my personal experience, the frequency of seemingly inexplicable flare-ups decreased drastically when I 1)eliminated dairy 2)began taking Colestid and 3)got some anxiety meds for the days I knew were...
  7. just an fyi - my nutritionist advised me that while they could cause no damage, that digestive enzymes were fairly pointless. He said the pancrease produces enough enzymes to break down 15 meals, much less one. Take it or leave it...
  8. i have tried it, but didn't have the patience to stick with it long enough to see if it would "settle down". Basically it was far too strong for me at first, so I threw in the towel pretty quickly. People say it works though, so if you have the patience, and don't react too drastically to it, I'd try it for a couple weeks. I found fibercon to be a lot gentler...
  9. maybe peanut butter?
  10. I would also add, as a pretty new member myself, that a lot of the best information can be found by doing a search on past topics and seeing if what I need to know has already been covered. Sometimes a new topic won't get as much attention because it's been discussed a good deal in the past. Nothing wrong with asking something a second time, but the depth...
  11. enterolab does not test for celiac (other than the genetic tests), they test only for gluten intolerance. Of course the difference is basically semantics - the result is the same: you can't eat gluten. The genetic results you asked about say that you don't have the markers for celiac disease but you do have others that Dr. Fine has identified for gluten intolerance...
  12. Anne, when I'm having trouble with a D rut I find the safest things for me are white rice, organic unsweetened apple sauce, bananas, peanut butter, avocado, and rice cakes. I'd make every effort to keep your protein up, you can really feel lousy without it. Good luck!
  13. if you do a google search for Crohn's you'll get a far more complete answer than anyone here will give you. But yes, there are some key differences. I believe as well as colonscopy, as a previous poster mentioned, they often do a barium follow through xray to look for bowel diseases. I've had both done and they aren't so bad. You should certainly ask your...
  14. CarlaB - clearly you felt it was necessary to step outside of the "accepted" or "established" medical realms to find answers, and I think it's great that you're having success with it. And clearly other people here are doing the same thing. I just think it's important to note that "traditional" medicine has an unbelievable amount to offer and will help people...
  15. The problem with Dr. Fine (and this is coming from someone who paid for his tests and am following what the results recommended) is that it's very easy to see a darker side to the situation. Yes, there have been many situations in medical history where important discoveries and procedures were initially viewed as crackpot and dismissed prematurely, but for...
  16. i can tell you that i come from a family of doctors, and each one of them thinks it's hoooey. They do believe strongly however in evidence of improvement on the diet, so if enterolab is what it takes to get one to commit to the diet, then that's something.
  17. "Tropical Source" makes a fine Gluten-free Casein-free chocolate bar line that is very tasty. Mint crunch is my favorite. Available at most health stores. I find when my stomach is feeling delicate that binging of any kind, even totally safe foods, can cause problems.
  18. i know this isn't the most natural solution, but i just started a new job myself and have noticed over the past couple months that no matter how careful i am with eating, anxiety can set me off. I went to my GP and got some anxiety medication that has made a huge difference for me. Can't recommend it strongly enough. I know it's not the right thing for everyone...
  19. i know this is well covered by now, but I had to go find the thread and post again. Just tried these tonight for the first time and they are really good. I used to eat weaver chicken nuggets all the time (before going gluten-free of course) and these are at least as good, if not better. One tip- i find they're better when a little over-cooked. Take a...
  20. i concur with all. they're excellent, and $5 is probably the best price i've heard for them...
  21. two that i know of are Fleischman's No Salt Margarine (only no salt) and Willow Run Soybean Margarine. I recommend the latter, but I'm not sure how easy it is to find. The Fleischman's is a little bland.
  22. i take kyo-dophilus. it's everything free. can't necessarily vouch for it's efficacy however...
  23. hey carla -- thnks for the vance's dairy free suggestion. looks intriguing. i've tried both soy and rice milk and they both taste like erasers to me. does vance's taste like milk or just a generally acceptable flavor? do you buy online?
  24. Hey all, got my enterolab results in. Thought I would post for other people wondering if it's worth it. FYI, I received them in 13 days - much quicker than expected.... Antigliadin IgA 164 (Normal Range <10 Units) Antitissue Transglutaminase IgA 75 Units (Normal Range <10 Units) Quantitative Microscopic Fat Score 874 Units (Normal...
  25. it's a running gag. the other night he said he was allergic to pectin. just another letterman oddity.
