I take Metagenics Cal Matrix, which are calcium supplements. I take the recommended dose of 1500 mg. per day. I also use their Vitamin D3 called D3 1000 and I take 2000 mg per day. I also include magnesium glycinate chelate tabs and usually take 1 per day at 300 mg. I follow the recommended amounts for optimal results but some people may have to take differing...

ARCHIVED Biopsy Necessity
Gemini replied to beefree11's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
As someone with 4 autoimmune diseases myself, the way I understand it works is that IF you have underlying Celiac Disease and the autoimmune attack is allowed to continue, once the small intestine has been damaged, the immune response will look to other organs to start destroying. Inflammation becomes worse and worse unless gluten is removed from the diet... -
It absolutely could, especially as you get older. I went to inquire about increasing my basic life insurance through work and along with age, they asked if you had any autoimmune issues. There were a few questions designed to weed out anyone with chronic conditions. I didn't go any further with it. You may be able to obtain some coverage but it may cost so...

I never recommend taking bio-phosphonates for anyone, unless you are 90 years old and are doing it solely to prevent further fractures. At that age, you won't live long enough to experience severe side effects. All of these supplements are good but exercise is key if your weight is low. For a woman, that is less than 126 pounds and for men it's less than...

ARCHIVED Oh, My Dog, These gluten-free Products Are Expensive!
Gemini replied to Wise's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I always cringe when I hear someone refer to Celiac as a disability. It may be officially defined as one but in no way am I disabled. This is completely do-able for anyone....except for those who are really down and out. I do feel sad and upset that many people in this country are homeless with medical conditions out of their control but America is also a... -
ARCHIVED What Are Your Reactions To Gluten In Non-Food Products?
Gemini replied to AzizaRivers's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Contact with mucous membranes, which the eyes, nose and mouth obviously are defined as, would cause a reaction because it's part of the GI tract. That makes sense. CC from supposed residue on your skin may also cause a problem if you ingest it. That's common sense also. However, if topicals do not come into contact with mucous membranes, it shouldn't be a... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Wine Lovers
Gemini replied to BrookeT's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
All of these e-mails are CYA statements and mean nothing other than the company are covering their own butts with legal disclaimers. If wheat paste were a real problem, any of the reputable Celiac foundations would be all over it. I am highly sensitive and have never reacted, not once, to wine of any kind. I have yet to meet any Celiac who has had a problem... -
ARCHIVED What Are Your Reactions To Gluten In Non-Food Products?
Gemini replied to AzizaRivers's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
If you are ingesting your shampoo, which would be pretty obvious because of the horrible taste, then you could very well be reacting to the shampoo. There is also the possibility that you have developed a contact allergy to an ingredient in the shampoo. The symptoms you describe match perfectly the effects of a contact allergy. Many Celiacs automatically... -
ARCHIVED An Unsafe Ingredient List For Non-Food Products?
Gemini replied to ddcannon's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Most skin reactions are caused by a topical allergy to a product and wheat can be included in these. An allergy differs greatly from an intolerance. I highly doubt there are any lists for non-food, topical products because it is the general consensus among physicians that you cannot have a Celiac related reaction from a topical product unless you eat it or... -
ARCHIVED Peaches Deli In Massachusetts
Gemini replied to brett31em's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Peaches is no more!?!?! What a huge bummer! I have trouble believing it was a lack of business because every time I went there, they were sold out of the rolls and some of the baked goods. I had to special order them to buy any. -
ARCHIVED How Gluten Friendly Is Your State?
Gemini replied to Mama Melissa's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Most of New England is extremely gluten free friendly with restaurants, stores, specialty stores and bakeries coming out of the wood work. I am constantly amazed at how much they cater to Celiacs, in general. Boston, in particular, is a gluten-free gold mine! After living here, I doubt I could go to anyplace that wasn't as accommodating as here. -
Celiac Disease does not suppress your immune system....it is a disease of overactive immune response. You may become run down from anemia related issues from mal-absorption but anyone suffering from Celiac disease has an over active immune system.

I also went my whole life as an undiagnosed Celiac and wasn't diagnosed until I was 46. The low white cell count, for me, was from childhood so your experience is different than mine. Anytime you have a sudden and dramatic change means something is going on and needs to be investigated. Do you exercise? I hit the gym 3 times per week and it has made a...

ARCHIVED How To Handle Eating Out With Cc Risk?
Gemini replied to Melstar23's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
As a highly sensitive, diagnosed Celiac who was suffering from severe malnutrition, I do agree with some of your advice given and think they are good overall guidelines. However, I think eating out is hugely dependent on where you live and education level of the restaurant in question. I am lucky to live in the Northeast, where the amount of gluten-free awareness... -
The doctor I saw did not specifically name certain autoimmune diseases as being linked to low white cell counts but, as I have so many, she said this was common and a well known subject for doctors. There are many issues which doctors are privy to but never discuss with their patients. I also have many family members in the medical field and they have also...

Yes, the source is the hematologist I saw after being diagnosed with Celiac Disease. I have 3 other autoimmune disorders, all due to a ridiculous diagnosis time with the Celiac. Other blood conditions which may be caused by autoimmune disorders are high protein counts. High total protein counts are sometimes a cause of concern with regards to multiple myeloma...
-
Low white cell counts are entirely normal for people with autoimmune conditions, especially multiple autoimmune problems. I have had life long low white cell counts, which did not improve with the gluten-free diet. Even though all my nutritional deficiencies are now gone and it's been 6 years gluten-free for me, I still have low white cell counts yet I am...
-
It does IF you are still in the recovery stage of things and any deficiencies you may have are not normalized yet. Otherwise, no, Celiac would not cause you to be more susceptible to other illnesses. You have an overactive autoimmune condition, not an depressed immune system. Another condition which can cause someone to be ill all the time is IgA deficiency...

ARCHIVED Paper Cut! Am I Glutened?
Gemini replied to MariaOfColumbia's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
The second edition of the book is just an updated version. I bought both books and found there was little that was really new in the second edition. Both are excellent reads and highly informative for those with Celiac......not boring, either! -
ARCHIVED Paper Cut! Am I Glutened?
Gemini replied to MariaOfColumbia's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
For an autoimmune reaction to occur, you absolutely have to ingest gluten into your GI tract. It happens no other way so you are safe from a paper cut, even those which occur from a gummed area. As Peter stated, the gluten in the envelope gum is an urban myth. If a cut heals slowly or with a lot of inflammation, it's most likely from germs or from not cleaning... -
ARCHIVED Grrrrrrrr . . .
Gemini replied to VioletBlue's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
This may have been the statement that Richard was referring to. It does imply that soy containing products are not safe for Celiacs. I know it is not easy to have more than one intolerance because I cannot have dairy on top of gluten. However, BC caters to the gluten free world with these products and cannot make everyone happy. There are other options out... -
Thanks for clarifying that, Peter. As a non-cereal eater, I assumed krispies had wheat, as everyone with Celiac seems to avoid it. However, I would also assume that the bread bowl did contain wheat, and maybe barley also, but I know there is definitely wheat in bread. That's such a no-brainer, it's mind boggling to think anyone who avoids wheat would do...

ARCHIVED People Who Think It's So Easy....
Gemini replied to kristianne75's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I wouldn't say the diet is always easy and I doubt anyone here on this forum has ever said that. I am one of those who have found this diet pretty damn easy, for the most part, and I fall into none of the categories listed above. I am 100% gluten-free and have the blood work to prove it, as I am highly serio-sensitive. My life is far from utopian but what... -
If the school nurse cannot eat wheat, then the Rice Krispies and bread bowl would have been a no-no. Even if she has an allergy vs. Celiac, those foods are a wheat bomb and would cause her a problem....if she really does have a problem. Wheat allergy can be as bad as Celiac....the reaction may be different but wheat should not be consumed.

ARCHIVED Positive Blood Work Question
Gemini replied to divamomma's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yes, your daughter most likely has Celiac Disease with those test results, I am afraid! That is fairly elevated for someone so young so the odds of it not being Celiac or a false positive is about nil. Usually there can be false negatives but not false positives. I will warn you here......the biopsy could prove negative in the very young, even if she...
