  1. Celiac Disease can affect the age at which you start menopause. It has been linked to early onset menopause, which is what happened to me. I think the original poster was asking if the gluten-free diet can affect menopause once it has started. The stopping and starting of your cycle is one of the symptoms of menopause, if you are at the right age for...
  2. Since the Ttg can become elevated with the presence or development of other autoimmune issues like Hashi's thyroid disease and liver disease (which are associated with Celiac anyway), using this test to monitor dietary compliance is not really the way to go. It doesn't automatically mean you are ingesting gluten, especially if you are feeling well and are...
  3. I think if you stick with a reputable company or eat organic, this won't be a problem. There are many poultry suppliers that do not inject their poultry with solution and that can be easily found out by asking. I have to admit I don't eat much in the way of processed frozen stuff, except those made specifically to be gluten free by a gluten-free company....
  4. It's common for this to happen with menopause anyway so it's doubtful that your gluten-free/DF status had anything to do with it. Menopause is defined as going 1 full year without a cycle....until that happens, you are not finished yet......or as I felt when I was finished....done with youth!
  5. Unless you are eating processed meats, etc., this shouldn't be an issue for Celiacs. Fresh meats, eggs, etc. are naturally gluten free.
  6. Lisa is absolutely correct in this and none of what you claim is based in any up to date science anywhere. I am a super sensitive Celiac also but spent a lot of time learning about the disease process of Celiac Disease so I would know where I had to be careful and what was overkill. I too have a reaction when exposed to smells but it is not a reaction that...
  7. This is very good advice. Many Celiacs are being diagnosed with microscopic colitis when their symptoms fail to respond to the gluten-free diet. It isn't always about gluten. I also had severe damage.....all the villi were pretty much gone. I did respond really well to a strict gluten-free diet yet I don't screen for topical products other than lipstick...
  8. In the US, you can only deduct the difference in cost between regular food and their gluten free counterparts. In addition to that, total deductions must exceed 7 1/2% of your adjusted gross income. Unless you are living at poverty level and have a lot of medical expenses to deduct, it's not worth the trouble of documentation...you won't save enough money...
  9. Not all protein drinks are soy or dairy based. I use a whey protein drink and yes, that is derived from dairy but it is purified to a ridiculous degree which makes it highly digestible. I have problems with dairy from lactose, not casein, and have no trouble with these drinks. You can also get egg based or hemp based protein drinks so there are many options...
  10. You may have partial villi damage, which means you are still able to absorb some fats. I wouldn't be worried about this at all....except as an indicator of possible Celiac. Your healthy cholesterol is excellent and your bad is low, which is great. My cholesterol still runs low overall, which at 51 years old, is about as good as it gets. The one number, the...
  11. I think what you are talking about is apples and oranges. Anything that comes into contact with the mouth will cause a true Celiac reaction because the mouth is the beginning of the GI tract. I am not disputing that at all. Ditto for the nose and eyes because they are all connected and lead to the small intestine. That's why using eye drops or any meds for...
  12. No problem! Open Original Shared Link I use the BioChem powders and they are quite tasty. I like the vanilla and it mixes well with water or on occasion, I use a 50/50 mix of water and soy milk. If you don't feed your muscles with enough protein, you will not build muscle. You also have to exercise. Just by doing these 2 things, I have been able to...
  13. The best way to sustain weight or gain muscle is to drink protein shakes, like body builders do. Add some weight training to that and you can still turn things around. Even after I healed, I still had trouble maintaining my weight and I think it had mostly to do with eating a healthy diet. Lean protein, lots of fruits and veggies and dessert on occasion...
  14. I don't think I could have worded this better myself and it shows you have a really good grasp on the mechanics of Celiac Disease. I have a hard time, sometimes, being around smells myself but are they a true glutening? No, they aren't and I am not that overly sensitive, mind wise, for it to offend me when I know I am having a psychosomatic reaction. I...
  15. First of all, try to calm down. Lymphoma is still pretty rare with Celiac Disease and the VAST majority of cases are diagnosed before the Celiac is discovered. The fact that many of your symptoms have reversed makes me wonder why any doctor would think you have refractory sprue because on many levels, you are improving. Many people make the mistake...
  16. There is no reason to give up coffee unless it bothers your stomach. You also do not have to give up dairy....unless you find it bothers you. That would be pretty obvious after ingesting either. I can tolerate very small amounts of milk, like the amount used in a cup of coffee or tea. However, I cannot ingest large amounts or eat ice cream, etc. Everyone...
  17. It would seem that the lab either made a huge mistake in interpreting your daughter's results or they know nothing about Celiac Disease. Those are the 2 main Celiac related genes. I would call the doctor back and ask him outright why they have made such an error. I should also add that, while extremely rare, people can and do trigger fro Celiac without carrying...

    ARCHIVED Fosamax

I would imagine that the reason for the non-response to treatment in Celiac would be due to non-absorption, at least prior to diagnosis. Fosamax and all those other bone meds are highly irritating to the GI tract, which explains why you have to stand for 30 minutes after taking it. This probably is the cause for the reactions to it. Is this drug listed as...
  19. Bonnie Blue....from Gone with the Wind! You will be fine because you are doing everything you need to get better. Addison's is one of those diseases that is linked somewhat to Celiac. It's an endocrine system disease and they are common with Celiac, like thyroid disease. The thyroid and the adrenals work together for good health. Addison's results from a...
  20. I had the same experience when returning from London last October, except I had my carry on packed with delicious gluten-free bread I had bought to bring home. Bread is perfectly legal to bring in but they had that cute little beagle sniffing everyone out in the arrivals hall. He promptly sat down in front of my bag and I had to explain to customs what the...
  21. Try this: Open Original Shared Link It has a great array of places to safely eat. Massachusetts is a very gluten-free friendly state so don't worry too much.....it's not that hard to find good food.
  22. I swear both my parents have celiac disease, especially after I got my gene testing results. They both have flaming symptoms and related problems and my father looks like he was just released from a concentration camp, he is so deathly thin. Yet.....no one wants to hear this and he continues to eat lobster mac & cheese on a regular basis. My...
  23. If you have a positive gene test for Celiac Disease, then you inherited that gene from one of your parents. If you have a double copy of the gene, then it came from each side, meaning both your parents carry the disposition to celiac. That is what happened with me. I have a double DQ2 gene. A person carries the disposition to the disease but that doesn't...

    ARCHIVED Fosamax

Oh, how I hate that! I like my PCP, for the most part, except that I am opinionated about certain things (which I'm sure you have all noticed!) and I always do my homework before agreeing to anything. I absolutely refused to take any bio-phosphonates and my PCP was not too happy about that. I researched it and spoke with my dentist because I have so many...

    ARCHIVED Fosamax

I'm so sorry that you went through this. I agree.....the side effects with these are worse and more common than a doctor will tell you. Good for you for sticking to your guns. Add some weights to your walks and you'll most likely reverse the bone loss. It is not impossible to build bone at any age, if you ask me.
