  1. OK....now that you have clarified how you feel, I can relate to that. FYI....I have no desire to be 90 either. It's overrated, most elderly people that reach hyper-age are not living independently and most of their peers are dead, which can leave them feeling very isolated. Not true for everyone but for a very large number. I do not follow a strict gluten...
  2. Can I ask why someone would become a vegetarian and then eat a lousy diet? Grilled cheese, pasta, bread....these are all crappy carb loaded foods that aren't good to eat on a regular basis anyway. I guess if you decide that your health really doesn't matter, then go ahead and eat whatever you want. You say you will not eat meat, no way, yet you don't have...
  3. You should not be afraid to go to the dentist because I have yet to find anything used at a dental office which contains gluten. Not to say that on the very rare occasion it could happen but as an uber-sensitive Celiac, the only reaction I have ever had was from the compounding agent used to make dental crowns/teeth and it was a reaction to gums used for...
  4. I also am a cook and have always made about 80% of what I eat. To be honest, I was so close to dying from Celiac that the day I found out it was official, I was overjoyed and relieved. I was not crazy as many doctors had implied and there was a reason I was fading away to nothing. I know you said you were asymptomatic but that is more deadly because of obvious...
  5. My husband makes fantastic gluten-free bread for us and we keep it on the counter....no need to refrigerate. That way we can make sandwiches for lunch if we want without the need to de-frost or refrigerate the bread. I think that seems to be a drawback to store bought gluten-free bread. Our bread lasts for up to 6 days and remains pretty fresh for the first...
  6. Thanks again Gemini.I'm new to this.Only gluten-free 5 weeks but it is a wonderful feeling to know that how i felt the past 30+ years was NOT NORMAL.Feels like I have a whole new life.As you know dealing with family members is frustrating, even though we love them and want the best for them.I was sorta hoping that this next kidney stone will change my dads mind about his diet.Good luck with your hubby

  7. I am the Celiac in my family, although like yours, I believe many others have the problem due to symptoms and related autoimmune diseases. However, the person close to me with the kidney stone problem is my husband. I suspect he also has a gluten problem (no, I am not paranoid and think everyone has it, BUT there are a suspicious number who have flaming symptoms...
  8. You may want to try Canyon bread...they are available at Whole Foods Market and it's the best gluten-free, commercial bread out of all the ones I have tried. I think Udi's is OK but very dry and their quality is not consistent. Canyon makes a multi-grain bread that is more than just brown rice flour. It contains some excellent gluten-free flours....a good...
  9. I think you have tuned into the fact that Americans have a serious hang-up about food and it's evident in how many people are seriously overweight. It is not normal to talk about food all the time but because it's so socially acceptable, people just don't know when to stop or aren't even aware how much their lives revolve around food. I have noticed the...
  10. I think that if all the labeled gluten free food out there had that much gluten in it, no one would recover and be well. If you fear the food you eat, then it's a self fulfilling prophesy that you will become sick from it. Am I saying that people don't react....no, I am not. Buit many Celaics have very sensitive systems to begin with, including myself, and...
  11. Nicorette brand of smoking cessation products are gluten-free and they work pretty well. I used the Fast Melts, mint flavored, and was surprised at how well they curbed cravings. Just when you get to that point where you REALLY need a smoke, pop one and let it slowly melt in your mouth. After about 10 minutes, you feel calmer and forget you wanted a cigarette...
  12. Milk became an obvious problem for me after about 2-3 years into the diet. I was doing fine, for the most part, then started to get sick after eating ice cream, puddings or anything that constituted a strong dairy hit. I think it took me those 3 years of healing for the gluten symptoms to totally resolve so that anything else I was reacting to became obvious...
  13. Yup...my normal temps are usually 96-97 degrees. Hypo thyroid is a leading cause of low body temps. I have Hashi's but even after successfully treating the Hashi's, my body temp. is still low. I think that's why heat bothers me so much. I also have seasonal and environmental allergies to boot and when I was going for allergy shots (which worked really well...
  14. You may have developed or have had another intolerance which often may not be noticed until you are gluten-free for awhile. I have to avoid most dairy, except for the milk I put in my tea, because that's all I can tolerate. I also do not do well with gums, such as guar and xanthan, which are found in many gluten-free products. I was diagnosed at age...
  15. Yes, that is technically true but the best source is from red meat. That's been long established. Any good doctor or nutritionist will emphasize the inclusion of red meat for anemia. Worked wonders for me and I was severely anemic for years while undiagnosed with Celiac.
  16. Welcome! Celiac Disease does not result in a suppressed immune system, rather, we have overactive immune systems. The goal is to calm it down by going strictly gluten-free. However, you can become very run down from resultant anemia and other vitamin deficiencies, along with viruses which can be very difficult to overcome. I was always sick before diagnosis...
  17. I have been to London many times and went last Fall again and stayed in Kensington. Renting a flat is the best way to go but you will find that dining out for dinner in London is relatively easy to do. Many places have gluten-free menu's or can easily whip up a meal that will be safe. I am an extremely sensitive, diagnosed Celiac so am very picky about what...
  18. No...the bone pain is not strange. Something else we have in common.....for about 3 years after diagnosis, I had this terrible bone pain in my right femur bone. It hurt so much on some days, I would drag my leg. It ached like a toothache. I had x-rays done and my PCP said my bones looked fine...no abnormalities. I do have osteopenia in my hip and osteoporosis...
  19. It sounds like you just have a lot of inflammation and that does respond to the gluten-free diet....over time. Every Celiac has loads of inflammation in their bodies when initially diagnosed so that is normal for this disease. Do you think there is the possibility that you may have fibromyalgia? Your symptoms sound like that and it's another one of...
  20. Hon....sounds like you need a pan of gluten-free brownies, along with a good acupuncturist! I am not being snarky but for this type of chronic problem, western medicine is very bad and eastern medicine is very good. I would strongly recommend trying to contact one and have a consult with them. They do very good things. And yes, you will get better...

    ARCHIVED Dentist

No....I do not think it has all that much to do with luck. From what I learned calling just about every dental supplier out there, they were perplexed as to why there was so much fear out there regarding dental products. I explained to them the need for total gluten-free status with regards to products and they replied that there would be no need to use any...

I do not use flavored dental floss because I like the unwaxed variety and that does not come flavored. I used to use the mint type when they did make an unwaxed, flavored mint type but that was pre-diagnosis so that won't help you at all. I would stick with the unflavored, unless you want to call the company and go through that exercise of trying to verify...
  23. I have regular facials and have never had a problem. If the place doing them uses good products, you'll be hard pressed to find anything related to gluten in them. I've never become ill from having one.
  24. The last 2 paragraphs of this article are a bunch of baloney! I don't know about the rest of you but gluten-free food is not routinely contaminated, as they say in this article, to the point were people live in fear of food. In fact, if gluten-free food products were that compromised, no one would ever heal. This is all a marketing ploy, based on fear....
