  1. I have had great results on my blood work after starting the gluten-free diet. At diagnosis, my tTg was 200,I had a positive EMA, and all my other tests failed by high numbers. I never went back to the doctor for a year because I had issues with the way they handled the whole situation and figured it would be a waste of time to re-do blood work that soon...
  2. I don't think they automatically do DNA testing in Italy. I read and heard from Italians that they test kids under the age of 5 IF there is Celiac in the family or they have symptoms. Their medicine is no better than ours. It's also socialized medicine so testing is not done so routinely. I really don't think it matters where you are...doctors only ever...
  3. I never accused anyone of making anything up so you really should take a few deep breaths before posting in anger. And who said I do not react to small amounts of cc? Actually, I am an extremely sensitive, diagnosed Celiac who had no villi left so don't go and accuse people in this group of not reacting. Actually, I do not eat processed foods like french...
  4. You probably won't see this as you may already have left but Warwick Castle is AWESOME!!!!!!!! I am pea green with envy...in a good way! Whole Foods is easy to find. It's about a block from Kensington High Street tube station, on the same side. It's a huge building and you just cannot miss it. It will blow you away...the best WF I have ever been in...
  5. I think you hit the nail on the head! People are too focused on gluten and xanthan gum can cause horrific reactions which mimic a gluten reaction 100%. It happened to me and was one of the worst reactions I ever had. You can't have a gluten reaction if there is little to no gluten in a product. Most of the time gums are present in gluten-free products and...
  6. I've been to London many, many times and you will have no problems with obtaining gluten-free food there. There is a HUGE Whole Foods on Kensington High Street, near to Kensington Palace, and they are chocked with foods for the food challenged. Try the Genius bread, which is gluten-free, and is absolutely delicious. One of the chain restaurants we like...
  7. Like some others have stated, I haven't found any gum which does contain gluten, although I stick with the Orbit brand. Their bubble gum is pretty good and it's sugar free also. The envelope thing is a Celiac myth which will not die. There is no gluten in envelope gum. Your doctor is not a Celiac? They shouldn't be giving out advice on what to eat or...
  8. You are correct...Godiva chocolates are not gluten-free. I used to eat them all the time pre-diagnosis and switched to Ghirardelli after diagnosis. It was tough giving them up but they have never professed to be gluten-free and with all the ingredients listed in their chocolates, I doubt they could pull that off without separate lines. Ingredient lists for...
  9. I totally agree! No need to make this diet any harder for newbies! It's important to get the correct information in the beginning. I just eat wayyyyyyy too many Ghirardelli squares and as a really sensitive Celiac, I would be back to square one if they contained any gluten.
  10. Don't use what happens with others to gauge your recovery. Fruit spreads rarely contain gluten and I have used that one before with no problems. I am a pretty sensitive Celiac. People can react to many different things in food and it's not always gluten. Fruit can sometimes cause problems due to the fructose/sugar levels. If you feel fine after eating...
  11. My symptoms I suffered with were complete and extreme exhaustion, mainly in the morning when trying to wake up from sleep. I have a real hard time getting going in the morning and gain speed as the day goes on. I was still a bit fatigued later in the day but not like in the mornings. My nails were splitting, my eyebrows began to disappear, my skin becomes...
  12. Take a deep breath and don't panic! If a thyroid is enlarged, it usually means that it is working harder to produce the thyroid hormone your body is demanding. It could mean there is inflammation there because that's what happens when an organ is overworked trying to keep up. I have Hashi's and have swung between the two also. My thyroid was enlarged somewhat...
  13. I agree with you completely, sandsurfgirl! I am addicted to the little squares of chocolate and eat one every day. I do not generally eat from shared lines because I have become quite ill from doing so....I am that sensitive. I have learned that some companies do a fantastic job at preventing cc and Ghirardelli is one of them. If there were any amount of...
  14. Unless you have a topical allergy to wheat or some other substance in these products, the use of shampoos or bleach should not affect Celiac Disease. You have to ingest these products to cause a reaction by your immune system and you definitely don't want to make a habit of ingesting bleach! Besides, I highly doubt there is anything harmful to Celiacs...

    ARCHIVED Frustrated With Drs

Same here. I was so disgusted with the medical profession by the time I figured out I had Celiac and then had to ask them for testing, I decided to avoid them all together. I was down to 97 pounds and just assumed, from all my symptoms, that things were deficient and my bone density abnormal. I knew I was severely anemic because that's the one test they...
  16. The ANA test is just a general test for inflammation in the body...it doesn't diagnose anything in particular. Celiac can cause a positive ANA alone. I have 4 autoimmune diseases, total, and my ANA is always elevated but is slowly coming down the longer I am gluten-free. I don't worry about it as I feel pretty good right now.
  17. I, too, have Sjogren's Syndrome and it has gotten better but, unfortunately, it's my biggest problem which hasn't gotten better to the degree I would like it to. My eyes are still dry, although better than they were initially after diagnosis of the celiac disease. My teeth are now more stable from lack of saliva but a lot of work goes into that and I am...
  18. I have one of those keeper husbands myself. I do the cooking and he does the dishes and never complains. He also learned to make delicious gluten-free bread from scratch, so I would be lost without him. When you have a finely tuned team, conquering this change is much easier. I am glad you are able to do what you do, considering the pain problems you have...
  19. No...I live in Massachusetts....but please don't hold that against me!
  20. Good luck, Lady, and hang in there. I feel your pain!
  21. I would think that anyone running a restaurant claiming to have a dedicated fryer would only have to deposit the combined oils into the gluten fryers and use fresh oil in the gluten-free fryer....making things safe for Celiacs. No one in their right mind would do what you have claimed and advertise their fryer as dedicated when people would become very sick...
  22. You cannot always assume that your problem is gluten....Poppi made a really good point. I am extremely sensitive also and I go out to eat occasionally but I never eat at fast food restaurants because they just don't hire the kind of people I feel safe to turn my food needs over to. I find eating in higher end restaurants much safer because the education...
  23. You will not be glutened by a topical patch as gluten does not absorb into the skin. The nicotine is formulated for absorption but, even if there were gluten in a patch (which I doubt), it wouldn't pass through. I used the Nicorette Fast Melts and they worked pretty good. They are gluten free. I am not sure which way is better but I think it depends on the...
  24. I feel the same as you do in that I love to cook but I also work for a living and with my commute, do 50 hours per week. Between the exercise classes that I take to combat osteoporosis and my work schedule, plus the amount of cooking needed to maintain a healthy, gluten-free lifestyle, I was beginning to get less and less sleep and felt like I had no life...
  25. Thank you for this tip! I am pretty close to Rt. 9 and know the restaurant, although I have never been there. That might change soon....
