Latest Celiac Disease News & Research:

Well, that's good news! One less thing to worry about. The elevated ANA is not a big deal. Mine was and is elevated and has been coming down slowly the longer I am gluten free. It just is a marker for general inflammation in the body and can be elevated due to any one of the autoimmune diseases out there. Celiac alone can elevate it. Good luck at the...

ARCHIVED Bone Density Scan Results...
Gemini replied to love2travel's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Dentists will tell you the real story about those bone meds because they are ones to see the damage, not a doctor. I am having some dental implants done and you have to sign a waiver if you are taking bio-phosphonates. The jaw necrosis that can be a side effect from them basically happens when bone stops breaking down, making way for new bone growth. (That... -
ARCHIVED Bone Density Scan Results...
Gemini replied to love2travel's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Bone density scans are also covered in the US. I think that's pretty much the norm for most countries. All I had to do was tell the doctor I wanted one and it happened. No one should be refused if they have reason to believe their density might be compromised. It can happen easily enough without having Celiac Disease. -
ARCHIVED Bone Density Scan Results...

It's nice to hear that the post-menopausal crowd can reverse osteopenia/osteoporosis too! I had little doubt it was possible if you put the work into it. -
ARCHIVED Positive Rheumatoid Test...
Gemini replied to IngridBeth's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Looks like we are AI disease twins! I have found out since this post first appeared that Sjogren's will cause elevated RF numbers as Sjogren's is considered an arthritis type disease. My RF tests are slowly coming down but they are still elevated and I don't have RA. The joint swelling and pain can come from the Hashi's problem. That is one of the symptoms... -
ARCHIVED Bone Density Scan Results...
Gemini replied to love2travel's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I had the same results as you did but I was older (51) and it had progressed to osteoporosis in the lumbar region of my spine. I was also post-menopausal by 6 years. I few things I have learned....you will probably have better luck gaining bone density if you have not gone through menopause because estrogen plays a role in bone formation. Also, a woman... -
ARCHIVED Nail Salons And Hair Color
Gemini replied to daisymae106's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yes, that's correct. You pretty much eat lipstick or anything else you put on your lips and the hand lotion should be gluten-free because you may eat a sandwich or inadvertently put your fingers or hands on your lips or in your mouth. Foundation is up to you but I would check ingredients lists for that if you want to be sure. I do not screen facial creams... -
ARCHIVED Nail Salons And Hair Color
Gemini replied to daisymae106's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Use your good common sense...that's all. If there is any way in your daily habits that you may end up ingesting shampoo or conditioner or any make-up that is suspect, then screen for gluten-free status. I just don't ingest it myself and am careful so it hasn't been a problem. My recovery has gone very well so it hasn't been an issue. Besides, I love my hair... -
It can be related to Celiac but in a round-a-bout way. Petichiae can be a symptom of another autoimmune disease called ITP or Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura in medical-ese. What happens is your autoimmune system begins to attack your blood platelets and once the number drops lower, it can cause internal bleeding. Your blood will not clot well and minor...

ARCHIVED Nail Salons And Hair Color
Gemini replied to daisymae106's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have had my hair colored for over 20 years using good quality salon color and have never had any kind of an issue with it and I am an extremely sensitive Celiac. Let's face it....hair color is not something you want to be ingesting on any level and if you did, I am sure you would know it. It would be a problem if you have any topical allergies at all,... -
ARCHIVED Teen Weight Gain Technique/product?
Gemini replied to Karmann's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Can your son do some weight training also? It's a great way to build muscle and will make him much stronger. Along with weight training, protein shakes are one of the better ways to feed muscle because you can't be eating meat or fish all day long. Figure a gram of protein per pound of body weight, per day. Protein shakes provide concentrated protein, without... -
ARCHIVED Teen Weight Gain Technique/product?
Gemini replied to Karmann's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I don't think that's a fair statement of fact. Most people who are serious about weight training or getting really fit and developing muscle use protein shakes daily as an addition to a healthy diet. You cannot get enough protein in a normal diet to build muscle mass..or muscle at all if you have under developed muscle from Celiac Disease....unless you want... -
ARCHIVED I Think I've Made The Transition
Gemini replied to Marilyn R's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I was so sick at diagnosis that within 3 days of going gluten-free, anything being cooked using wheat smelled bad to me so I understand what you are saying exactly! The grossest smell of all? Dunkin' Donuts when they are making the donuts! I would rather inhale nuclear waste. I can't imagine how people eat that crap! -
ARCHIVED Cous Cous Gluten Free On Menu
Gemini replied to kellynolan82's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You too? I can always tell when my thyroid isn't happy...at least the symptoms make it obvious. I really like Lundberg products, in general, and have never had any type of reaction from them so know they are safe for Celiacs. I was surprised when the cous cous didn't turn out so well. I ate a lot of cous cous pre-diagnosis so am familiar with making... -
I have had one implant done and am having 2 more done over the next year a half. The first one went absolutely great and I have had zero problems with it. Healing was swift and complete. I also had to have some bone grafting done each time because it's always a good thing to build up the foundation that the implant is going into. It was easy....once the tooth...

ARCHIVED Cous Cous Gluten Free On Menu
Gemini replied to kellynolan82's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Skylark, the voice of reason..... I have tried the Lundberg gluten-free cous cous and it's horrible. The brown rice versions stick together like glue and no matter what you do, it just isn't the same texture as the wheat version. I haven't tried the millet version but that's an interesting substitute. -
ARCHIVED Celiac And Hashimoto's Disease
Gemini replied to pattianne's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Absolutely! This is common to those of us with both conditions and the reason is your daughter may be absorbing more of her meds now that she has been healing. It happened to me but it took longer to happen as I went many years with undiagnosed Celiac and was older. I went seriously hyperthyroid and had to re-figure the correct dosage of Nature-throid... -
No one is going to guarantee that their food or drinks absolutely do not contain any gluten because that's impossible to prove. Testing is not quite that sensitive and it would cost too much to do so even if they could. However, I have found after doing this for 6 years that many places, Starbuck's included, will bend over backwards to make sure your drink...

ARCHIVED Gluten Problems And Autoimmune Thyroiditis?
Gemini replied to Enigma33's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I agree with your opinion on this as this was my experience....one year before my Celiac diagnosis, I had my thyroid panel done (I have had Hashi's for almost 20 years and the Celiac diagnosis came 6 years ago) and my TPO antibody was 1200, with a normal range being under 40. I was miserable and couldn't understand why my thyroid was so out of control. I... -
ARCHIVED Shampoo, Lotions, Dryer Sheets?
Gemini replied to kali-mist's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Unless someone has an additional topical wheat allergy, then you do not have to use gluten-free skin products...unless you make a habit of ingesting them. Your statement that people will definitely ingest some from washing their hands is not quite true. I know I always rinse my hands well after washing and I certainly don't eat food with my hands but if there... -
Another outstanding choice! If you want a break from the kiddo's, you can always send them into the maze!

ARCHIVED gluten-free Pizza In Worcester, Ma
Gemini replied to Beth C from MA's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Yup...Boynton's does a great job with the pizza. It's the only pizza I eat. Lot's of places have gluten-free pizza but most of it is lousy. Try the mousse cake offered on their menu. It's gluten-free and made off premises. I am not a huge mousse fan but this cake is phenomenal. -
ARCHIVED Thyroid & Misery Of Switching Meds
Gemini replied to idonteatwheat's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I could not agree with your post more, beachbirdie! While I know this is not true for everyone out there, I have had the worst luck with specialists and always refer back to my functional medicine doctor for thyroid care. Endo's just seem to be a bunch of dopes, they do not like to prescribe natural thyroid supplements and always claim we are over medicated... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Sometimes Just Isn't Good Enough....
Gemini replied to strezzedout1979's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Is your doctor re-running the complete Celiac panel on you for dietary adherence? Testing only the tTg is not the correct way to test for dietary compliance. Elevated tTg can happen due to other autoimmune issues so you may have another disease going on that is causing it to remain high and it may not be from ingesting gluten at all. Liver disease, Hashi... -
I did not find Warwick tacky at all. I think because they have wax figures from Madame Tussauds, representing a turn of the century week-end party, that some find it odd. I didn't and thoroughly enjoyed how life-like they were. It is one of the best preserved castles in Europe and is very impressive as you approach the castle. I have seen many castles in...
