This is exactly the reason why the so-called "Gold Standard" diagnosis fails so very many people. No Celiac diagnosis should just entail the biopsy results. Actually, that could be grounds for a malpractice suit so why they keep doing it boggles the mind!

ARCHIVED When It's Not Celiac's
Gemini replied to 123xyz's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Actually, it does, if you have Sjogren's Syndrome and an enlarged thyroid. Not everyone has these issues but, as I cannot swallow anything without cutting my food up into baby sized bites, the garden hose reference is very true for me and probably some other people. As for cancer screenings, I find it sad that our society lives in such fear of getting... -

It sounds like what you are experiencing is the LACK of bloating you probably had in your pre-gluten-free days. I was down to 98 pounds the week I got really sick yet I looked about 4 months preggers because of the bloating. You will also lose a lot of water weight because you probably are not ingesting much processed food anymore and that is loaded with... -

I understand your point and it's obvious you have had no bad experiences with invasive procedures like an endoscopy. However, there are those of us who doubt how safe it is and with good reason. I, personally, refused one because my blood work was so high, there was no mistaking what I had, along with symptoms at the time. I also had spent the past week vomiting... -
I was 46 years old when I was diagnosed, after 20+ years of intense symptoms and the inability to get past 105 lbs, at 5' 4" tall. I hit the wall and became deathly ill after consuming some nice hot cross buns over Easter of 2005. I have 3 other autoimmune diseases as a result of being misdiagnosed all those years, which is inexcusable considering I looked...

ARCHIVED When It's Not Celiac's
Gemini replied to 123xyz's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I think if your sis-in-law had gone on the gluten-free diet and her only problem was truly a tapeworm, she would not have improved on the diet at all. So, Celiac Disease could have been ruled out on that alone, unless there was strong suspicion of refractory sprue. I was going to say I couldn't believe it would take years to diagnose a tapeworm but, then... -
ARCHIVED Medical Marijuana For Symptom Control
Gemini replied to raisin's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I probably am as sensitive as you and it did not spark any kind of a reaction. I think all the small things that are not ingested are worried about far too much. If you had a reaction, it may be an allergic reaction....that's entirely possible. I have followed all of the guidelines that are current with regards to this disease and they must be correct because... -
ARCHIVED Medical Marijuana For Symptom Control

Pot absolutely helps calm the intestinal tract down after a glutening. I have a friend who has Crohn's and he is a regular smoker who holds a good job. He has been off and on a bag during his life and has severe Crohn's.....a lot of suffering at times. I have tried it on the very few times I have been glutened and it is amazing......my intestines calmed right... -
ARCHIVED If This Is True, I'm Gonna Freak

If Craisens contained any wheat at all, it would have to be listed on the package. According to the ingredients listing and a response from Ocean Spray, absolutely no wheat is used in Craisens. I eat these occasionally and have had no problems whatsoever (and I would if there was even a speck of wheat in them) so what I have been told is correct....no wheat... -
ARCHIVED Celiac And Eye Problems?
Gemini replied to LAceliac's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I have never heard of blurred vision being caused directly by Celiac but you will find that eye problems can be caused by other autoimmune problems that develop along with Celiac. One of the main ones is Sjogren's Syndrome, which I suffer from. Your eyes become extremely dry and light sensitivity is common with dry eye and Sjogren's. My vision will sometimes... -
ARCHIVED 6 Months gluten-free Still Have Antibodies
Gemini replied to diane h's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Diane....I wouldn't be too worried just yet. It took me a full year to being my antibodies down and that is extremely common. Too many Celiacs automatically think they are ingesting gluten when they may not be and that would be a mistake that will set you back big time. Are your antibodies down at all or are they still as high as they were when you were diagnosed... -
ARCHIVED Stickers On Fruit? Waxy Coatings?
Gemini replied to Lisa16's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Ummmm, Mike......in all recent publications concerning Celiac, the stamp issue was put to bed. Stamps in the US do not use any wheat in them, they use corn based products. You can lick stamps, unless you are intolerant of corn. Boy, there is so much fear out there....... -
ARCHIVED Why Is Endoscopy Still "the Gold Standard"?
Gemini replied to jacflash's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
OK....now I see where you are coming from. I don't think I said it is 100% absolute with regards to a diagnosis but that it is 100% specific to Celiac Disease. So if a patient presents with Celiac symptoms and has a positive tTg and EMA, which was how I was diagnosed, many progressive doctors will give a definitive diagnosis on this alone. Remember, no other... -
Nope.....these statistics were published in an article I read that came from the American Cancer Society and it was their push for mammograms. Fact is, breast cancer was a lot more rare in days past than today and I still think that the overuse of pharmaceutical hormones has much to do with it. People willingly give their young daughters BC pills as early...

ARCHIVED Why Is Endoscopy Still "the Gold Standard"?
Gemini replied to jacflash's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
So....what you are saying is that the present medical criteria, of which many people are so adamantly hung up on for a diagnosis, is wrong? I understand the mechanism behind the EMA test and what the ensuing reaction is but, again, every medical article I have read and every doctor I have questioned about the EMA test and it's validity has emphatically stated... -
ARCHIVED Testing Results
Gemini replied to holiday16's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I applaud your experiments on this, Mike, but I have to admit, I am not a believer at all. I drink red wine daily and was end stage, ready for a feeding tube Celiac. I also use some, but limited amounts, of certified gluten free food and have NEVER had one reaction and my blood work has been awesome. I couldn't possibly be ingesting gluten in any larger... -
ARCHIVED Why Is Endoscopy Still "the Gold Standard"?
Gemini replied to jacflash's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
But if a parent or first degree relative is a diagnosed Celiac, and someone else in the family has flaming Celiac symptoms, considering it IS a genetic disease and is FAR more prevalent that most of the medical profession care to admit, why would a doctor NOT look to Celiac first and foremost? The VAST majority of my family have a problem with gluten, although... -
ARCHIVED Why Is Endoscopy Still "the Gold Standard"?
Gemini replied to jacflash's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Every doctor and medical reference material I have looked at, including talking with the lab directly, have stated it is 100% specific to Celiac Disease. You also have to factor in whether the patient has active symptoms that would steer a person to having a Celiac panel done. The current thinking is if a patient has a positive tTg AND a positive EMA, then... -
Why do they do all these studies on pre-menopausal women when, I believe, the majority of breast cancer happens in post-menopausal women? I could be wrong but I know there are WAY too many women diagnosed each year and yet, I don't believe enough is being done to find a real cause because I personally believe that a major contributing factor is something...

ARCHIVED Why Is Endoscopy Still "the Gold Standard"?
Gemini replied to jacflash's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
jacflash......did your doctor do an EMA blood test in the panel? That would be the Endomysial Antibody test. It is 100% specific to Celiac Disease, meaning no other disease will give you a positive. It should be done in conjunction with the tTg...these 2 tests, if positive, are as good a diagnosis for celiac disease as the biopsy is. It is how I was diagnosed... -
That's interesting....I had not heard this but then again, I don't do physicals every year either. I actually do have a pretty good PCP now and she is not a nag about screenings and physicals. In fact, I was pleased to hear that because my health is so good (at the moment, anyway!) she recommends every 3 years. I also have never had a mammo, for the reasons...

I'm sorry to say that yes, this is what has become of medicine today. There are still some good doctors out there who think outside the box but mainstream medicine is all about Rx's and screening tests....so they can get you on more and more meds. It's all about control....once they load you up with meds they think you need, you have to keep going on a...

ARCHIVED What Is Candida In The Mouth Besides Thrush?
Gemini replied to Christina98's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
This is probably another clue that you are, indeed, gluten sensitive or have full blown Celiac. I had a thrush problem and canker sores for years before being diagnosed with Celiac Disease. About a month after going gluten-free, both problems disappeared, never to return and it's been 4 years for me. It will also cause swollen gums and all sorts of problems... -
ARCHIVED Reply From Red Cross Donating/ Receiving
Gemini replied to Lisa16's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Remember that gluten has to enter the gut and small intestine to provoke a response so blood donating and receiving, plus tissue and organ donation are all safe! You can also receive meds through an IV and they do not have to be gluten-free, although the vast majority are. -
ARCHIVED Attention Sensitive Celiacs
Gemini replied to dilettantesteph's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
It is also entirely feasible that many who suffer from Celiac have additional food allergies and intolerances to other grains. These have little connection to Celiac, though. It would make sense that other intolerances would happen, and are probably more common than most realize (like Celiac itself) but an intolerance to corn is not a Celiac problem and...
