ARCHIVED Gluten Free Deli In Harvard, Ma!
Gemini replied to francelajoie's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
In Harvard, Massachusetts?!?!? Or is that Harvard Square, in Boston? I live about 15 minutes from Harvard, the town, and am looking to move to Harvard in the coming year. Holy gluten-free Cannoli, I have to check this place out! -
ARCHIVED How Do You Know If You Are Healing?
Gemini replied to goldyjlox's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I think it's actually the opposite in most people. When I was eating gluten, I was never as hungry as I am now because all the bloating makes you feel full all the time. I would like a bird and feel full. Plus, with all the inflammation going on, hunger was not an issue. When you start to heal and your food is being absorbed like it should, you begin to... -
I must be one of a few people that had no problems after I went totally gluten-free with my diet. My numbers were through the roof at the time of testing and a year later, on the low end of normal. I did not change any of my cooking pans, just scoured them to within an inch of thir life and the only make-up or skin care product I changed was my lipstick....

ARCHIVED Whole Foods gluten-free Food Line
Gemini replied to Gemini's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I thought I would post for those that don't have the inclination or time to mix up and store flour blends. I keep mixes on hand for when I don't have time to bake from scratch....I work long hours and have a long commute so time is important. I find both ways equally as good as the mixes from gluten-free Pantry are delicious. As far as shopping at Walmart... -
ARCHIVED Whole Foods gluten-free Food Line
Gemini posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
As I was food shopping last week-end at Whole Foods, I noticed that they had their own brand, known as 365, of gluten-free baked goods, in mixes like the Gluten Free Pantry. They were noticeably cheaper than the gluten-free pantry also. I went up to the customer service desk and did my usual of thanking them for thinking of the Celiac community. They told... -
I'm not sure either whether the gluten-free diet alone will improve osteo in an older, diagnosed Celiac but I have no intention of taking any medication for it....at least not yet. There are serious side effects to them involving your jaw bone and, as I have to have 2 dental implants done, I am not taking any chances. The problem of necrosis has no fix so...

ARCHIVED Long Wait To See Doctor
Gemini replied to mrsry's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Completely off the subject here.....Ursa, that Black Forest Cake is making my mouth water! Did you do that yourself? For the unfortunate lady with the long wait......I understand how you feel. I ended up paying for the blood work, out of pocket, at another doctor's office I had been to in the past, so I could get some fast results. I was sick as a dog... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Disease And Second Hand Smoke
Gemini replied to suzanne2906's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
This subject has been broached before but I'll add this in again.....please bear with me so I can fully explain. You have to ingest gluten into your intestinal tract to produce a reaction and be glutened, unless you have DH and then it occurs also by skin contact with gluten. It may very well be that you do not feel well and get sick from second hand smoke... -
ARCHIVED Egd Results
Gemini replied to gabyy's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Erin.....I think once you find out how easy it is to find replacements for most all of the gluten-free stuff you eat, you'll find it very easy to adopt this lifestyle. It's really not a diet, it's the correct way to eat. I also think you may not realize how many symptoms you really have that are attributable to gluten. I had weird things happening that I... -
ARCHIVED Questions...
Gemini replied to mariaboek's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Absolutely! In fact, you do have symptoms....the ones you have listed above are all associated with and/or are caused by celiac disease. When a person presents with these symptoms, and you have a family member with it, it's almost guaranteed that you have it also. My whole family are all symptomatic but refuse to face reality, even though I am a diagnosed... -
This is when it totally sucks having doctors that miss the boat on diagnosing celiac disease early. The reason you were probably unresponsive to treatment before is because you were constantly sparking an autoimmune reaction from eating glutin, so that would make treatment and stabilization of your thyroid almost impossible. I have Hashimoto's thyroiditis...

I know that different restaurants can be inconsistent with their knowledge but my experience at Carraba's was excellent. Those disclaimers are for legal protection only.....if they were that worried about glutening people on a regular basis, they wouldn't offer a gluten-free menu. Carraba's is owned by Outback's and the reason there is a gluten-free menu...

ARCHIVED Confused/doubtful About My Daughter's Celiac
Gemini replied to ultimattfrisbee's topic in Doctors
I would bet her problem is dairy. Many celiacs cannot have dairy for awhile until healing occurs because lactose is broken down at the tip of the villi so if there has been damage, you cannot digest dairy just yet. This happened to me but I was able to reintroduce it after about 6 months and now I have no problems with it. -
It's stories such as this one that makes me crazy! This is not meant as a slight towards you, Jen, because I'm sure you were not familiar with celiac disease enough to know that this doctor did a grave injustice to your son by keeping him on gluten for 2 years with positive test results. This is why I have as little to do with doctors as possible concerning...

ARCHIVED Negative Blood Test---now What?
Gemini replied to Hadleygirl02's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Your daughter may be too young for enough damage to have occurred to trip the test. It took me 20 years and a lot of damage before it was figured out and that should never happen! To be honest, any one with these symptoms, especially the smelly, fatty stools, most likely have celiac disease. I know many people, especially with small children, like to see... -
Sara....I have heard of Christine the celiac disease doctor from a relative who went there. They had the same impression. Are you aware that there is a Celiac conference in Manchester, NH on September 16th? I just found out and have e-mailed them to see if it's too late to sign up to go. Christine will be giving a talk there.....sounds good!

I'm sorry I don't have any advice to give on this but wanted to say that the odds of finding a doctor in a hospital program that will agree to treat, or even recognize celiac disease without a biopsy is probably pretty low. Check it out by all means but they will pressure you for a biopsy....it's what they do and why so many people go years with undiagnosed...

ARCHIVED gluten-free Restaurants In Boston
Gemini replied to angel42's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Welcome! I have some good choices for you, however, they are on the high end scale but you will get a fabulous gluten-free meal and won't have to worry that the restaurant will mess up. My favorite is "Rialto" in the Charles Hotel, Harvard Square in Cambridge. Great area to walk around in, very historic. Rialto is one of the few restaurants that has an exclusive... -
I laughed my butt off when I read this post!!!!!! I agree, although I would like to see the Grand Canyon! The clams are to die for too! Not greasy and crisp so this is a pilgrimmage every Celiac must make. The mecca of the non-Islamic world!

ARCHIVED Do I Need A New Doctor?
Gemini replied to someday's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Alopecia is the medical term for hair loss and it can be an autoimmune problem. If you have celiac disease, then you would be at higher risk for alopecia. It's another one of those things doctors do not connect the dots on! I would go to an immunologist and see if there is a test for it.....I'm sure there must be. Your doctor is a jerk for discussing your... -
ARCHIVED A Question For Type 1 Diabetics With Celiac
Gemini replied to Cam's Mom's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Barb.....as others have stated, there are a number of other autoimmune issues that will keep a Ttg high. Type 1 diabetes and autoimmune thyroid disease, which I have. My Ttg was through the roof at diagnosis but I was already hypothyroid by then. I had my good doctor (non-HMO) run a thyroid antibody and it's supposed to be under 40, for the lab I went through... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Pill
Gemini replied to hit2win1's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I just have huge doubts about the whole thing. It's an autoimmune response and, as the medical profession still knows so little about the immune system and how to control it, I don't see a gluten pill as reality anytime soon. Would I be interested? No. I am so comfortable with th gluten-free lifestyle, I could care less if I ever eat gluten again. I was... -
ARCHIVED Teeth ?
Gemini replied to Nikki'smom's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Julie....I have learned much since diagnosis and many problems I had over the years were all connected to celiac disease. No one connects the dots. I know that my knowledge is better than many doctor's and dentists and I am teaching both about how devastating celiac disease can be in many ways. My dentist now is aware and my information to her is helping... -
ARCHIVED How To Lower Cholesterol?
Gemini replied to jkmunchkin's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Excellent post!!!!! I agree completely and only wish others would not take what their doctor's tell them as God's word. Pharmaceutical companies, along with the insurance companies, run health care in this country and one way to keep things cheap is to just put everyone on pills and convince them that cholesterol problems are more hereditary than not... -
ARCHIVED Teeth ?
Gemini replied to Nikki'smom's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
When my adult teeth came in as a child, my 2 front bottom teeth were yellow....no enamel on them. It kills me because I had so many signs of celiac disease then and no one picked up on it. If the teeth are yellow with no enamel on them, as opposed to being a yellowish color, with enamel intact, I am afraid the enamel does not come back. I had both teeth...
