ARCHIVED Family Reunion
Tim-n-VA replied to summerteeth's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I usually take ham to an event like this. Easy to prepare, easy to transport. It insures that I'll have a meat dish to eat and usually there are vegetables that are relatively safe. -
ARCHIVED Hard Times Cafe - Gluten Free Chili (supposedly)
Tim-n-VA replied to Emily Elizabeth's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Just to clarify, the original post was about "Hard Times" which I think is a regional chain around the DC area, not the Hard Rock Cafe national chain. I've not eaten there since my diagnosis and am interested in hearing if anyone has any experience with them. -
ARCHIVED Chicken Ideas Please
Tim-n-VA replied to Ariauna's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I got the basic idea from the crockpot site referenced above. I took a can of frozen lemonade (thawed), six tablespoons of brown sugar and two teaspoons of balsamic vinegar. I heated that while I fried boneless chicken breasts. I sliced the breasts and served with the lemon sauce. The crockpot site used half of these quantities but that left me wondering... -
I found this on the Hooters website FAQ section: I didn't realize it was that easy. Can't have gluten? Avoid foods that typcially contain gluten.

ARCHIVED Sweet Christine's Bakery - Kennett Square, Pa
Tim-n-VA replied to NJKen's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
To help future searches, this applies to the Brandywine Valley area and Wilmington, DE. Timing was off for a meal at Sweet Christine's but we did have muffins there and they were very good. I also got a pretzel stick to go and had that as a later snack and it was also good. Pizza By Elizabeth just north of Wilmington was very convenient to the museums... -
ARCHIVED Sweet Christine's Bakery - Kennett Square, Pa
Tim-n-VA replied to NJKen's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
I'm considering a Labor Day trip to the Brandywine River area. Anyone have any other suggestions for restaurants? Thanks, -
ARCHIVED Newly Diagnosed Meeting In Virgina June 14th 2:00pm
Tim-n-VA replied to mvineyard's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
The gluten-free cooking demonstration was repeated the past Saturday at the Whole Foods in Fairlakes. I don't have the specific dates but another is scheduled in October. The store website has a calendar of events. -
ARCHIVED For Everyone Who Is A "self-diagnosed" Celiac...
Tim-n-VA replied to glutenmommy's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I think part of it is just conversational shorthand. I usually tell people I live near DC instead of listing a small suburb that few people have heard of. Similarly, saying you have Celiac disease without a formal diagnosis could just be a convenient short-hand to use in casual conversation instead of a long speil on the symptoms, test failure rates, doctors... -
ARCHIVED For Everyone Who Is A "self-diagnosed" Celiac...
Tim-n-VA replied to glutenmommy's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I was under the impression that the antibodies were attacking the villi leading to the atrophy not that the atrophy allowed the release of the antibodies. I'll admit that I don't understand a lot of the technical stuff and Wikipedia should be looked at with a little skepticism but their Open Original Shared Link seems to support my impression. Most articles... -
ARCHIVED Beware! Thai Kitchen Changed Ingredients
Tim-n-VA replied to jennavive00's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thanks for the notice. I have just recently found these in the local stores. The ones I have do say gluten-free. Hopefully the ones with wheat are older stock that just made their way to the shelves. -
ARCHIVED Celiac And Msg
Tim-n-VA replied to Tabasco's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I'd guess wheat in the soy sauce. Many people do have problems with MSG but it isn't a gluten reaction. Cross-contamination from the prep area (most Chinese restaurants put some type of coating on some of their items such as sweet and sour chicken) is another possiblity. -
ARCHIVED Type 1 Diabetes Linked To Immune Response To Wheat
Tim-n-VA replied to ChemistMama's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I found this on the American Celiac website: I wonder which comes first? -
ARCHIVED Colonoscopy - What To Expect?
Tim-n-VA replied to alcie27's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Regarding the sore throat: For my first endoscopy, I asked if the anesthetic would supress a sensitive gag reflex. They said that knowing that, they would spray my throat. I had no sore throat afterwards. For my second, I was a little distracted by the fact that I was having a colonoscopy at the same time and didn't mention the gag reflex. I have a... -
ARCHIVED Gluten In Frozen Fruit?
Tim-n-VA replied to Mi55-E's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I know this was discussed in the past and I can search later when I'm not at work. Was there an answer to the question of whether strawberries could have gluten from the straw they are grown on? I realize that there is probably lots of variation with regards to really using straw, etc. -
ARCHIVED Are Celiac Groups Ruining Their Credibility?
Tim-n-VA replied to truckergordon's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I don't really care. 180% of average salary is almost a worthless statistic. There are so many factors that could justify salary variation it is impossible to evaluate. Tell me the ratio of admin and fundraising costs to "direct benefit" costs and you might have something meaningful. -
ARCHIVED Honey Nut Chex
Tim-n-VA replied to OliveBranch's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
No reaction to any of the gluten-free labeled boxes but the thought of chocolate cereal didn't appeal to me. With the honey-nut and cinamon, I usually mix with rice or corn to cut back on the sweetness. -
ARCHIVED I'm Going To Dollywood
Tim-n-VA replied to Tim-n-VA's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
I survived the trip without getting sick but I really can't recommend Dollywood or the Pigeon Forge area for gluten-free dining. Based on the menu list at the link above, I planned for my lunch in Dollywood. When lunch time came, we discovered that that particular food concession was taking the day off. I had left the list in the car and guest services... -
I have a sister-in-law who is always trying fad diets. She went thru a gluten-free phase indirectly as part of the blood type diet. She might have also been gluten free when she was selecting food by color but I can't remember the details of that one. One data point for knowing a person who chose the "lifestyle". I personally like these people because...

ARCHIVED Grouping Your Own Posts
Tim-n-VA replied to elle's mom's topic in Board/Forum Technical Help
There might be a more efficient way but I use this process: 1) About 1/3 down from the top of the screen where it says "Logged in as:", click your name 2) On the page that pops up, click the "Posts" tab. 3) On the list of your posts, if you click one it will take you to your post in the thread so you can scroll for any replies. On a related note... -
Yes.

Thanks. With "Dr." in the byline and starting with references to a medical doctor by name, it was not clear.

ARCHIVED I'm Going To Dollywood
Tim-n-VA replied to Tim-n-VA's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Thanks for the suggestion. I went to their site trying to find a contact and found a link that I'd missed before. It isn't a large list but they have a few gluten free options: Open Original Shared Link -
The most commonly cited statistic on this board is 1 in 133 which is 0.75%. The "false stats" are no more false than the stats cited on this board almost daily.

Other than the title (is it really possible to be too tolerant of other people's decisions), I didn't have any problems with the article.
-
One possible explanation: For some people, the anesthesia that puts you out overcomes their gag reflex. For others, numbing spray is needed. For my first scope, I asked the doctor before he started and because I said I had a sensitive gag reflex he sprayed and I had no problem. I didn't think to ask before the second and they had to stop the procedure...
