  1. This is a great idea! I have one question, which regards viewing new posts. So far, I only know how to access *all* the new posts. But I don't know how to get to a listing of new posts in only those threads that I have a discussion going it. Sometimes I don't have time to check all the new threads, and there are a few discussions that I have lost...
  2. I had the same experience, too. When I did the Specific Carbohydrate Diet for four months, my periods went from 6 to 7 days in length with heavy cramping to 3 to 4 days in length with minimal cramping. The flow wasn't affected so much, however. Now that I'm gluten free but eating other carbs (not so much, but occasional rice, potatoes and corn products...
  4. I don't know what it is, but I have problems with nature's path gluten-free cereals, too. Always get a big stomach ache when I eat them. I don't know if it's too much corn at one time. I know some people have corn sensitivities. For me, I think it's just hard to digest, so eating too much of it gives me problems. That's what I think. I switched from...
  5. I feed my pup Solid Gold Hund-n-flocken--I never noticed before that it has pearl barley in it. I'll have to try him on something else...which is too bad, because he loves this kind. And his fur and skin are gorgeous on it. It looks like the Holistique may be gluten-free, depending on your opinion on oatmeal...and of course the Barking at the Moon. It...
  6. For what it's worth, I would say avoid the Dodge Neon like the plague. I worked for a rental car company that used neons. Granted, rentals take a beating. But these cars were in the shop as much as they were being driven. The toyota camry is pretty close to as good as a car gets. It, along with the Honda civic, are safe, reliable, inexpensive to...
  7. It's books.google.com You can link through to it by moving your cursor over the more>> drop-down menu on the mainpage. You can also search in Google Scholar (scholar.google.com) and it will give you both peer-reviewed literature on a subject, as well as book content, though for both you must have rights for specific content to access more than the...
  8. See? My GI doc is a QUACK!
  9. The information I posted above was based on what I had learned from my doctor. But I just talked with the gal at Enterolab, and she told me that actually the endoscopy should be used for evaluating further down the small intestine, that my doctor was remiss for not scoping any farther than the duodenum. But if your doc only biopsied the duodenum, it's possible...
  10. Ugh...sounds awful. My student insurance through Aetna is not so hot either, hence my glee at having no official diagnosis . If you haven't ordered genetic tests to go along with your stool panel, I recommend it. It's a very good way to evaluate probability of specific kinds of problems, and also to help understand the risks your children may face...
  11. That leaves you with some decisions to make about the meaning for you of a definitive diagnosis, as compared with the response to the diet that you've experienced and the invasiveness of the test and the potential pain of going back on a gluten diet. Only you can make this decision, though there are certainly plenty of folks around to help you see all sides...
  12. I guess it depends on how you're defining "mainstream." I know many people don't recognize the results yet...but I said it is mainstream, because it's completely in line with current standard practices--it's not wacky or biologically implausible. It's the same darn test, even if it isn't recognized yet. I'm not sure how Drs. Green and Fasano would...
  13. Hi All, So I got my results back from Enterolab and I'm HLA-DQ3,3 (subtypes 7,8). Does anyone eles have double DQ3? I searched a bit for info on DQ3, but only found info from folks who had it with DQ1 or DQ2. I'd love to share symptoms stories with other DQ3's out there.
  14. Hi Tonya-- I had the same as you; endoscopy, colonoscopy both normal (though my doc opted to only do a biopsy of stomach and one of large bowel, because the small bowel "looked fine from the scope...." doesn't he know the damage is microscopic and can be invisible to the naked eye early in the disease? Clearly he didn't.), blood work normal... But...
  15. I had less damage than many on here, I think, though wicked high malabsorption. I was always bloated, gassy, and retaining water when I was eating wheat. Since cutting it out, even just a few weeks ago, my tummy started to flatten. I lost about 6 pounds of water weight in the first week or so, I think from inflammation coming down. Eating a naturally...
  16. Hey Jerry, Not that it means much, but I have training in epidemiology and also have run many an assay myself in my days in the lab. I vetted enterolab pretty thoroughly, based on what I know of these tests, before sending them my hard-earned dollars. The truth is, enterolab *is* mainstream. The assays they do for anti-gliadin antibodies and anti...
  17. Hi Jerry-- For what it's worth, last Thanksgiving I was not yet gluten free. After a breakfast of rolls, lunch of crackers, and dinner of bread and stuffing, and a midnight snack of a giant bagel from grand central station, I woke up running to the bathroom to puke. I thought it was food poisoning at the time. My friend had eaten all the same stuff...

    ARCHIVED Good Docs In Nebraska?

After having some conversations about my experiences, a friend of mine has reason to think he might have problems with gluten. He's looking for a new primary care doc. Also, he's interested in the Enterolab tests, but it would be great if insurance would cover them. Any fellow Nebraskans out there have any suggestions? He'll be checking this thread...
  19. Yeah, that's kinda what I thought. But they can also be present during parasitic infections when allergy is absent, so that gets a bit confusing in my case...I may well have been parasitized. I treated presumptively without testing immediately on returning from the field with mebendazole to take care of any worms I may have picked up in the village. I...
  20. Hi all, So I finally had my endoscopy and colonoscopy.... The results are thus: GERD Gastritis Eosinophilia of large bowel No evidence of parasitic activity No evidence of villous flattening Given my enterolab results, I'm wondering if my gluten intolerance could result in increased eosinophilic activity. The problem is that I traveled...
  21. Yeah, I've taken the high-end, enteric-coated, three-species, totally refrigerated probiotics for a year. Also drink a pint of kefir a day....hasn't helped, so I suspect something more...
  22. Hey there, I've worried about the parasite thing, because my symptoms started after travelling in Africa for three months. Back then I wasn't taking any stomach stuff, although I did go through a round of ciprofloxacine, a round of flagyl, and a round of mebendazole, in addition to malarone, and also three days of quinine and doxycycline when they thought...
  23. Yikes. I don't know if it's related, either; what I've read on gastritis says it passes on it's own, but like I said, I think it's a symptom of other inflammation going on...
  24. I've had this a couple of times. Once I went to the ER cause I was afraid it might be appendicitis (it wasn't). It felt like someone was trying to turn me inside out through my belly button. Or slashing me across the belly. Other times it's under the right ribs, right where the gallbladder is. It feels like someone is stabbing in the ribs with...
  25. Whoa! I've totally got that! And it's new, just the last year or so. On my left middle finger, and starting on my left index...I thought maybe it was some kind of nail fungus, or something, I was getting set to buy something for it
