ARCHIVED Omg- I'm A Phd Candidate!
JenKuz replied to Mtndog's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Congratulations!!!!! I'm Jen, new here, and about to take my second qualifying exam anthropology in October [bites nails] and defend in December [bites nails harder]. It's a tremendous accomplishment to pass without revisions; amazing, in fact. Good job. -
ARCHIVED For Those Of You With Dogs
JenKuz replied to lonewolf's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
So funny that you mention that, because I was about to recommend a book called "How to Speak Dog" by Stanley Coren. Totally unrelated to the site you posted, although it also looks good. I think all dogs can be trained, but it also helps to understand limitations of the breed and the individual dog, and play to its strengths. My dog acts like a circus... -
ARCHIVED Soup Is Mmm Mmm Good
JenKuz replied to Lauren M's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
This must be the simplest soup ever, but I swear it's to die for: 1 large can Glen Muir whole tomatoes dash rosemary dash thyme dash salt 2 tblsp butter (or to taste) Just blend up everything but the butter, heat slowly, melt in butter and serve! I *used* to eat this with french baguette toasted in the oven with olive oil and herbs. Now I forego... -
ARCHIVED For Those Of You With Dogs
JenKuz replied to lonewolf's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
My dog is a terrier-hound mix, and he's way more interested in 'keep-away' and tug than fetch. The retrievers are the only ones really bred for it. As a puppy, he'd take the toy and race off with it to the bathroom or somewhere else, or he'd goad me into trying to take it from him, and then try not to let me at the last minute. Now, when I throw his ball... -
Thanks for the good advice, guys. I have a biopsy scheduled for the end of October. I have debated going off gluten so long before the procedure; I finally decided, I feel like crap, I know it will help, and the biopsy may well return a false negative anyway, so I should be killing myself for the next month. Meanwhile, I've ordered the enterolab panel...

I'm seeing someone new; we've gone out a couple times and I've eaten normally. Now I'm going gluten-free. I would just order a salad and leave it at that, except that the guy has very sweetly offered me tastes of his dishes every time we've gone out. I'm worried about the next dinner. I'm not diagnosed, and I can't honestly say I'll be super sick if I...

I think that depends on the person. I don't eat much soy, so I haven't noticed. But I get terribly gassy from peanut butter. I never had any problems like that before, even with the usual suspects (peppers, cukes) until the stomach symptoms started. Now, even when I'm grain free, I've noticed that I get gassy from peanut butter, chickpeas, hummous,...

ARCHIVED I Can't Live Like This!
JenKuz replied to JenKuz's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Thanks for the concern, guys I've checked the lipsticks for gluten ingredients; I just meant, the potential for cross-contamination from eating bread and then applying the lipstick. I'll just wipe the tips, cause I love my lipsticks. Vanity may be the end of me one day, but there it is. I am replacing my toothbrush, however. That seems wise. -
ARCHIVED I Can't Live Like This!
JenKuz replied to JenKuz's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Lisa, Thanks so much for the sympathy I deglutened the kitchen yesterday and am going gluten-free today. Except my lipsticks. I can't bring myself to get rid of them. Everything else is gone, though. Yes, she is. She gives me hope for the new generation of doctors -
ARCHIVED Help...does Anyone Have Swollen Glands On The Back Of Their Neck?

Hey, it's kind of cool, though. Like a gluten barometer! -
ARCHIVED Contact Lens
JenKuz replied to fanny's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Hi Tiffjake, I found sorbitol in the ingredients list of my lens solution (Aquify). I thought this ingredient was grain-based, and could contain gluten. Do you think it goes through some sort of processing to remove gluten protein? Because it could perhaps be sterilized and still retain the protein. What do you think? Just curious. Jen -
ARCHIVED No Wonder Taco Bell Isn't gluten-free
JenKuz replied to Nancym's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
If you can eat corn, you can try using masa flour. It gives such a distinctive Mexican taste. I love it in my chili. Which thank god I can still eat. Whew. -
You can use any nut butter in hummus to replace the tahini, and it'll taste good. In a pinch I've used sesame oil instead of olive oil with some cashew butter for texture and it turned out great. Different, but great. As for me, however, I have a terrible time digesting chickpeas. Not an "intolerance," just an ordinary legume thing. I never had to...

I just found myself looking at the ingredients label on my contact lens solution, wondering if any of the lubricants or perservatives are made with wheat products. Then I found this thread. I have terrible eye problems if I use certain solutions. Others are fine. I'm about to search the ingredients to see if any are wheat based....so if anyone can point...

ARCHIVED Help...does Anyone Have Swollen Glands On The Back Of Their Neck?
JenKuz replied to DBRIDGEVEGAS's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I find this fascinating. I actually went to the doctor when I was in college, because I thought the large knots on the back of my neck were a tumor. He laughed me out of his office, saying "They're just lymph nodes." (And then my mom called his office to berate him for laughing at a young girl who is trying to be responsible about her health--Go, Mom!... -
ARCHIVED I Can't Live Like This!
JenKuz replied to JenKuz's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You're totally right. Actually, today I haven't been able to leave my toilet. I found myself looking up symptoms of E. coli, because a restaurant served me a salad with what could have been spinach in it yesterday. And then I realized that this is the diarrhea and gas I have every couple weeks, with something almost as bad in between. And there... -
ARCHIVED I Can't Live Like This!
JenKuz replied to JenKuz's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Thanks for the advice, guys. I'm leaning in that direction. BTW, NancyM, I love the paleolithic diet. One of my committee members is one of the people who originally came up with the idea of returning to a caveman diet. M.J. Konner is the name. Co-wrote The Paleolithic Prescription, which is worth reading if you haven't yet. -
ARCHIVED I Can't Live Like This!
JenKuz replied to JenKuz's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Thanks for that information. I actually was gluten free before, for four or five months. I didn't think I had celiac at the time, though; I thought I had tropical sprue associated with giardiasis. I did the specific carbohydrate diet for the four or five months because of that. I went off the diet only because I was doing a training program at Duke... -
ARCHIVED I Can't Live Like This!
JenKuz replied to JenKuz's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Yes, half of me agrees with you both. The problem is that I've travelled in a few developing countries and there may be something more serious wrong with me; the blood and stool tests seem to have ruled out anything infectious, plus I've taken every anti-parasitic and anti-biotic known to man. So I should go through the full diagnostic procedure just to... -
ARCHIVED I Can't Live Like This!
JenKuz posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I don't know if I can take this for another month before my biopsy. Every time I eat I want to throw up. My guts feel like someone is squeezing jello through them; sort of gurgly and painful and full of pressure. I want to cry every time I eat, but as soon as the nausea passes, I'm starving again, I'm looking for something else to put in my face. I don... -
I can see your point, except for two things: The first woman who didn't know what an ameba was, was not an assistant. She was the woman who actually drew my blood, therefore not a housewife or college student... The assistant who refused to read me my results was in fact the same person who ultimately called me with them, so she must have been authorized...

ARCHIVED Celiac's? Not Exactly...
JenKuz replied to RunnerNYC's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
RunnerNYC, It looks like all us undiagnosed folks have questions! Did the doctors give you an indication of how common this thing is and what can cause it? Like, if you had a sudden jolt like getting in a car accident or throwing yourself off a cliff tied to the end of a rope? (Not that I would *ever* do anything so silly... ) Could that do something... -
ARCHIVED Okay, What Now?
JenKuz replied to JenKuz's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Michelle, That's exactly how I feel. Definitely going gluten free after the biopsy, regardless. -
Oh, my. That's much worse. It's appalling, in't it?
