ARCHIVED Reaction To Gluten-celiac Disease
ptkds replied to danchi's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I think it depends on whether the baby has active celiac disease. My youngest had problems from day 1 whenever she had my breastmilk ( I didn't know about celiac at the time). My toddler takes about a day before she has the runny diarrhea. My 6 yr old takes about 1 hr before her tummy hurts. I get sick about 30 minutes after I get glutened. I think it... -

ARCHIVED Had My Daughter Tested Today
ptkds replied to Jo.R's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
That is great! My pedi was like that, too. When I asked her for the test, she agreed right away. She has another family with Celiac disease as well. My dr was receptive to my request, too, but that was after my dd's daignosis. I am so grateful for their wonderful responses, especially after some of the responses I have read about that others have had from... -
ARCHIVED Dh Rash? Didn't Look Like Pictures?
ptkds replied to bjshad's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I'm no expert, but I believe it "could" be DH. But then again, it may have been some other gluten or allergy reaction, such as eczema. My dd had a BAD diaper rash when she was 16 months old, just before diagnosis. I put every kind of med on there and nothing helped. It finally cleared up when she went gluten-free. Now my other baby gets a small diaper rash... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Diease And Obesity
ptkds replied to Lolabell's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
One of my problems is that I can't eat green veggies. I have some kidney problems, and for some reason my body produces too much of some nutrient (don't know what it is called) that is also found in green veggies. So the dr told me to avoid them. Plus I have NEVER liked veggies (except corn, potatoes, etc). I just don't know what to do. I am seriously considering... -
ARCHIVED Celiac Diease And Obesity
ptkds replied to Lolabell's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I just had to add that I am 100+ lbs overweight. I have been for years, and I tested positive for celiac disease in November by bloodwork. Unfortunately, I haven't lost any weight though since going gluten free. My dd (the 1st in my family to test postive) wasn't too small. She was in the normal weight range for her age, but she tested + through bloodwork... -
ARCHIVED Financial Assistance For Low Income Families?
ptkds replied to hornbeck0920's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I just cook them like regular noodles. Boil water, add salt, put in noodles for about 7 minutes, drain and rinse in cold water. I can't stand uncooked noodles and overcooked noodles make me gag ptkds -
ARCHIVED Sticky Bun Bread
ptkds replied to celiac-mommy's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Ok, this sounds great, but is it safe to leave the dough out overnight?? I just figured that the eggs in the bread recipe would make it go bad. Let me know if I read that right, cuz it sounds really yummy! ptkds -
ARCHIVED Please! Need Advice On My Toddler
ptkds replied to wildlife-lover's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
You should definetly have him checked for celiac disease. My dd was borderline anemic, but her pedi said her levels were "within normal range", but the WIC office said she was anemic. Or you could just try the diet for a while and see if he improves. It shouldn't be too hard if you are on the diet as well. He may also have a milk allergy or lactose intolerance... -
ARCHIVED Financial Assistance For Low Income Families?
ptkds replied to hornbeck0920's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
No, you can't get special foods allowances from the government. But some whole food markets do take food stamps. And HEB (if u have one near u) usually carries a few gluten-free things, and they take food stamps. On WIC, the dr can prescribe the special milk (such as potato milk, soy milk, whatever the dr recommends) and WIC will pay for it until your ds... -
I read things off the internet (mostly this site) to my hubby. I told him of all the dangerous and long term side effects of eating gluten. I told him about how long it takes to for the intestines to recover from a tiny amount of gluten. It took awhile for dh to get used to it, but now he is great about it. He accidentally glutened me and the kids the other...

My dh's grandmother died a few months ago, and I had the same problem. Only I also had to feed 2 kids, plus myself. I was still new to the diet. We had 2 meals made for the family by the church in the area. I went and found a Wendy's during both meals and just brought that in. When I mentioned to one of the ladies that helped prepare the food, she realized...

I most likely have DH. I go the the derm next month, and hopefully they will do a biopsy at that time since it takes 3 months to get in there! But after reading another post on here, I put some iodine on a bandaid and put it on my arm. It was itchy almost immediatly, but I left it on for almost 24 hrs. I took it off 2 days ago, and I can still see exactly...

According to the link above to the celiac.com website, you can create DH blisters by putting iodine on your skin. But there is another Iodine procedure that helps a person increase their iodine levels, and that is by painting iodine onto your skin daily. Since the spot where I put the iodine-soaked bandaid on my arm is getting worse, then I definetly wouldn...

Yep, when dh gets home, I may go see if I can find some stronger iodine. I don't know how it is sold. I just used some stuff I had here that I used awhile back. I still have a rough spot exactly where the pad on the bandage was. It looks funny. It is a perfect rectangle of tiny bumps! Keep us updated! I want to know if it works! ptkds

I happened to catch part of The Night Show w/ Jay Leno last night, and he had that guy that does all those controversial shows like 9/11 and stuff (I can't remember his name right now). They were talking about a new movie he has out called Sicko or something. It is about the poor health care system in America. He said that the accused terrorist down at Guantanamo...

ARCHIVED Celiac Disease And Your Teeth
ptkds replied to bloatedntexas's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yep, it's common to have weak teeth. My 6 yr old has had cavities in probably every molar in her mouth, despite regular cleanings and sealants. I once broke a molar just biting into a cheesestick from sonic (before I knew I had celiac). However, my dh who doesn't have celiac (at least according to his bloodwork) has HORRIBLE teeth, and he takes really good... -
This is an interesting idea. So I kinda tried it. I am not sure yet if I have DH (I go the the Derm next month), but I think I do. So I put some iodine (only it was from a 1% solution) on a bandaid and stuck it on my arm for a full day. It itched and drove me nuts. When I took it off, my skin was all red and irritated, but no real DH bumps. It is still a...

The reception is at Southwest Minnesota State University in the Student Center. They cater the events there themselves. The lady was so sweet! ptkds

My dh is a correctional officer. From what he has told me about the food there, I don't think you could get a gluten-free meal. My dh works for a state prison, so that is different than county. They run their own kitchens, and they have certain inmates cook all the meals. So I think it would be impossible to safely eat there. (gluten-free or not ) ptkds

I ordered Amaranth seeds the other day on accident. I thought it was the flour. So I was reading the label, and it said that I could make popcorn out of it. Has anyone ever done this? Also, I was thinking of trying to grind some to make the flour. Should I use my Kitchen aid grinder or a coffee grinder? I don't know how oily these seeds are. Thanks...

We are going to Minnosota in 2 1/2 wks for my BIL's wedding. He told me that the place that they were having the reception at wouldn't allow any outside food, and they were serving 1 meal and he didn't know if it was gluten-free or not. So I of course was very worried and starting to get a little stressed about the whole situation. So today I found the phone...

ARCHIVED Gluten-free Pizza?
ptkds replied to Belinda Meeker's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I use a recipe called "Seasoned Pizza Crust" from Bette Hagaman. It is WONDERFUL. My non-celiac dh and dd LOVE it. I think it is in her Comfort foods book. If you want the recipe, just PM me and I will give it to you. I also have the book called "Incredible Edible Gluten-Free for kids" by Sheri L. Sanderson. I got it on amazon .com. I haven't found 1... -
Well, I finally got to go to an IHOP yesterday in North central Tx. I asked the waitress about the corn pancakes, but she had no clue so she went and talked to the cook. He was VERY nice about the whole situation. At first, he said that they contained no gluten, but he would check first. He came out a few minutes later and said that the mix did contain wheat...

ARCHIVED Dd Had Scope Done This Morning
ptkds posted a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My 14 month old dd had her scope and biopsy done this morning. They had to poke her 4 freakin' times to get the IV in. I was fine until the 3rd try, then I just started crying along with her. Anyway, the dr saw ulcers in her stomach. We even got pics .He said her intestines look somewhat ok, but he is pretty sure she has Celiac disease. He told me...
