  1. HI Meline I know others will give you the name of the blood tests you should tell the doctors to give you if they can. I know its not just Greece but even in Hawaii they did not know about the blood tests for celiac. I had to find out about them on the forum and from my old doctor in Chicago. The blood tests were done within a few days of the biopsy...
  2. I added a picture of all the gluten-free pastas from Italy at http://www.hawaiifruit.net/PRODUCT-CATALOGUE.webp Here is the message from Antonio Rotunno. I can hardly wait to try some of this when I get back! ken ------------------- Hello Dr. Love, as I promise, here you are our gluten free catalogue and a brief description of our company. Bioalimenta...
  3. Didnt catch if your male or female but check your testostorone and other hormone levels. I was amazed at the difference after getting mine replaced. ken
  4. dont feel too bad, its rough work walking back and forth across 8 football fields while gorging on safe cheese, rice things, hundres of wines and sake etc.
  5. I'm working in tokyo for the month but if you call my wife when you get there, 323-2417 she may be able to make some gluten-free banana breads or something your kids would like. When Im home she sells them at the farmers market. Just dont know her schedule as she teaches at the local elementary school. have a great trip!
  6. The cold sweats are worse for me than the passing out. Which if I do here in Tokyo seems normal although falling asleep on the train and circling tokyo for 3 hours is not fun. Used to be able to set my clock by when i would wake up to change my tshirt. the vitamins have helped that too. If you do get some blood work, it might be good to check hormone...
  7. Had the same problem for a number of months. One of our members here suggested I try B complex and it worked wonders. I'll still, well it feels like passing out, get weak and sleep from time to time but it seems to be diet related if I take in too many carbs. good luck ken
  8. Have a great trip~ The Sat. am farmers market is at keauhou shopping center from 8 to noon. its the only one on the west side where you can get only locally grown produce. On your way around the island, the south kona fruit stand is a good place to stop too. have fun! ken
  9. Im so happy everything worked out and you had no trouble. wish I could have been around there more since things are way to hectic here in tokyo. Ill pass things on to merrimans so they know to pass the word on to servers. they have in the past so it must be that big party which caused the snafu. Anyway, it was great to meet you and I hope you can...
  10. Well so much for my diet! Already emailed this one home! My current research project is on types of figs! ken
  11. Hi,, I sent you the list we are working on for Hawaii and a list from Italy which I found somewhere on the forum. I bet there are other things on the forum which you could work into something for your area. Look for a local culinary school too. They may be very thankful for whatever you can give them. Open Original Shared Link is a paper I put together...
  12. Hi Meline Greece is one of the few places I have not been too so dont be surprised if we do show up -- with plenty of gluten-free foods. souvlaki is great any time of the day! What are some of the other cheeses you want to eat? Maybe cheese is not the hard part but giving up lukomathes may be <G> I can barely spell in english much less greek~! take...
  13. I think its always good to let the restaurant know what happened in a way that makes them want to learn more about our problem and what they can do to help and keep customers happy and coming back. We've been working on a dos and donts list for restaurants in Hawaii as a way to educate them. Most people in that business may have heard of celiac but they...
  14. HI from Tokyo natural cheese is usualy no problem if there is no mold. feta, and the cheese in saganaki ( I forget name, maybe keffateri?) and other greek cheese should be no trouble. If lactose is problem then cheese can be problem. Many Japanese are lactose intollerant and cheese is not so popular here and also very expensive! I went to 3 markets...
  15. I've had great experiences with acupuncture in many places around the world. The first time was in Hawaii. I had trouble with my shoulder for many years and my regular doctor just gave me more naprosyn. Finally a friend in honolulu said I should go see the acupucture Dr Watanabe which i agreed to try. went into the waiting room at his clinic and he walked...
  16. it is a great product brought a case of it with me to Tokyo and leave it at various restaurants. Its made and sold only in the US and not here but the company is based in Nagoya and Mie-ken.
  17. Good point, I have brought my own frozen "real" crab meat to friends sushi places. It's amazing what a good sushi chef can make with it in no time flat. If you want to try something raw, try scallops and the tuna. They are not usually "fishy". ken
  18. Yes, its a big no-no. generally made of surimi or processed fish with wheat binders to hold it together. This is true for all those Japanese things like kameboko, chikuwa and processed fish cakes. There are some pure ones in Japan but hard to find anywhere else. ken
  19. Usually I break out within 10 minutes of having some sort of hidden gluten. There are times when it's been a day or two and not sure why there is a difference other than the type of accident. good luck
  20. natural cheese was the easiest for me to digest after getting back to normal. I still eat too much of it! Never had trouble with soy or dairy but then again i never had any trouble until 2 years ago. i would try one at a time and see how your body reacts rather than doing it all at once. good luck!
  21. I was totally unconsious when I had mine so I dont remember a thing other thqan waking up and wishing I could have pizza<G>. You might ask the doctor ahead of time what they plan to do. Anyway for me there was no pain at all. My stomach actually felt better after it. take care Ken (in Tokyo)
  22. Hi, I had asked my friend who manages the JAL operations in Kona and he tried to get them to do something but in Hawaii they treat it like a domestic flight and dont offer much in the special meal catagory. Would have been ok with a fruit plate which they also didnt have. Might have more luck on the return flight. Being one of the celiacs who gained a bunch...
  23. Thanks all! Made to tokyo in one piece. Nothing at all to eat on the plane. JAL's food looked good but flaky crossiants were everywhere! too tired to make dinner or go out. just want to get my own computer working here. My office changed from dsl to cable TV and it just does not like my mac laptop. At least my 6 bottles of san-j soy sauce survived...
  24. Hi, I'm headed to Japan literally in a few minutes. Will try to take pictures of gluten-free foods I find in order to make us a reference file. Will there I'll spend a few days at the worlds largest food show. 8 football field sized exhibition halls with foods from almost every country. Over the years it is been interesting to see the increased numbers...
