  1. Got to thinking last night after I wrote the previous message. Its not so much that things are magnified as that it just takes longer for everything to heal and may just seem magnified. Soars or scratches take forever to clear up, colds take weeks instead of days and so on. Maybe, just a guess, our bodies are fighting off or starting to heal and the energy...
  2. Once called centrum who told me I had to call each time I bought a bottle since sometimes they were gluten-free and sometimes not. Guess whatever they buy thats cheap to keep the stuff glued together! I always loved Snapple diet ice tea too but in Hawaii, where they really need it, its almost impossible to find diet drinks other than coke and pepsi which...
  3. Yea I've kicked myself a few times too. Can remember being extremely hungry after a long day working in Japan a year ago and picking up one of those rice balls, not thinking and taking a bite. Can't remember where we were driving but as soon as I bit into it and remembered the soy sauce taste. i dumped the bag of stuff on the seat and spit up into the...
  4. It could be something in the ice cream, very few that I can eat without trouble, but it could also be some cross contamination if your family is like mine and were using the same spoons they eat with will eating something else. good luck!
  5. Well again we're on the same wavelength. I just started my third week of laryngitis and flu. Flu is gone but today my voice level is 0. First they tried antibiotics -- skip a week and now on amoxicillin. Doc said to check with the pharmacy to see if its gluten-free and the pharmacy said check with the doc. After a few calls and extensive online research I...
  6. Oh that sounds good! In spring in Japan, one of the dishes they make is with sakura leaves and blossoms in buckwheat. Been a long time since I made it but it was really good and I usually order it when I'm there each March. Light cherry flavor is really nice. Sometimes I'll use whole buckwheat or quinoa like one would use couscous with dried fruit cooked...
  7. Yuck is right! The only time I ever got sick on the job when I was a photojournalist was at a dog food factory where they processed stuff. This reminded me of that.
  8. Grinding it yourself would be best. I keep meaning to get a grinder one of these daze... In Japan near my office there s a shop where they grind it for you. They also have a machine where they hull rice that you buy so that you get both the rice and the coating called nuka which is used to make pickles. Cooking the whole buckwheat like rice or quinoa is...
  9. We often use Braggs too although not as a soy sauce replacement. Do use it in ponzu sauces. It's found on tables at many Hawaii restaurants now. Mrs Bragg has a farm about 10 miles from me.
  10. Sure sounds like your enjoying things there too. We take mangos for granted here and would kill for a real peach at times -- or apple. At the USDA collection in Davis they have 139 types of figs planted in a field and another few hundred they plan to put into a new field. Amazing collection. Besides the 18 peaches, I ate 126 different figs over 2 days...
  11. Sute about the Japanese lady. Something I can imagine. Your grandmothers cooking reminds me of my grandmothers cooking. She was born in the US but her family came from the Polish Russian border area. I do remember the chicken feet she always talked about. Also remember the first KFC in Singapore. They had people waiting in line to buy chicken feet! Not something...
  12. San-J wheat free tamari soy sauce is about as close as they come. It's the only one we can get in Hawaii but others on the forum have written about other brands. Ken
  13. I never did get to do a text file but youcan see a lot of pictures of soba making on my site. Open Original Shared Link scroll down until you see the soba school section. The key is mixing the soba (buckwheat) flour with ice water. You have to be careful when you buy the flour and the noodles as often its mixed with wheat flour. Some larger japanese...
  14. Sounds great! Mango04 is right, you should do cook book. Or, Maybe we should all do a fourm cookbook and sell it to raise $ for more celiac research!
  15. Haha maybe not a bad idea -- windex on DH. INteresting about the way it was designed. I always read that in Ancient Greece the chefs were male and protected by guards so that they were not killed by invaders. It can be labor intensive, for pastries like Loukomathes. I miss those too!
  16. Need to make a list of the movies I've not seen. "The Gleaners and I" sounds great. I had forgot about "Eat, drink, man, woman". Should rent it again since I didnt see it since it was first out. My wife cant figure out why I like Chocolat as she usually teases me about watching some James Bond movie for the 430th time. Well at the farmers market we...
  17. Funny you mentioned the peaches at Davis. I was there last Sept. and talked to a raw food group in Sebastopol. Went to the farmers market in the morning and ate 18 peaches that day. Really! Reminded me of going to You-pick places in Michigan when I was a kid. We NEVER get a good peach here for the same reason you cant get a decent papaya. They are picked...
  18. Hi, Glad you enjoy our ramblings! Scent of Green Papaya was a great movie. Some of our students here make it for the public lunches they serve a few times a year. Try to find Tampopo in foreign section. The director is Juzo Itami who made a number of other good films that have been release with subtitles. Patek is not available on my Island but when...
  19. I wonder how much of these wheat subsidies are tied into big US based agribusiness. Your right that the incidents of celiac and other allergies will increase in all Asian cultures if they succumb to the use of wheat. It's already happening in Japan. Manioc or cassava root is great. Had to go to a party at the governors in Guam and that and ulu / breadfruit...

  21. Never did like raw tomato, its just tomato sauce that does it to me now which is something I seldom have. Other nightshades dont bother me at all. My grandmother was the same way and never ate tomatoes. Prior to diagnosis I never had any trouble with anything although plenty of likes and dislikes/ Now I have to relearn it all again. take care
  22. The ginger tea is really good, especially with fresh ginger. My shirt sizes range from L to XXXL depending on how distended my belly is. Most of my friends tease me about beer belly but I never liked beer even before I had celiac. Ken
  23. It's really hard to say for sure but your description sounds very familiar. This thread started on New Years when I had an accidental glutening at a friends New Years party. Didnt eat anything, just breathing air around the kitchen while people were breading and making tempura. I didnt notice what they were doing at first, just alked in to say hello to people...
  24. I'm thinking of planting the trees before or after remodel and asking them to do it when I'm in Japan in March away from the dust. Then my wife can deal with it and arrange things the way she wants. take care
  25. Dont know if its available here in Hawaii but sounds like its good to check into. ONly get the reflux if I eat something with tomato late at night. Hate being woken up from the gerd coming up.
