  1. Rebecca, sorry you are having a hard time. But please know it is normal. It is normal to be upset when you have found out you have a condition that means you have to make major changes in how you manage your life. I am three weeks in. I feel like crying all the time (though I haven't actually broken down yet)... Anyway, know you are not alone. People...
  2. Thanks Ursula, Yeah not feeling too good yesterday - itching and stomach cramping - and today (running to toilet). Lesson learned... At least I am now REALLY sure that gluten is the problem. Sally
  3. Thanks Ursula. That info is very helpful. And I thought this dr. was knowledgeable! He did say we were looking for celiac! Then he takes biopsy only from the colon! Anyway, will discuss with him how / if we can do anything else to get a diagnosis... would be better to know. Particulalry if can find out if it is just gluten, or there are other things...
  4. Hi, Got the results of biopsy. Seems that Dr. only submitted biopsy of colonoscopy. Results were chronic nonspecific colitis (edematous stroma and lyphocytes and plasma cells). I guess this doesn't mean anything with regards to celiac. Does anyone know what this means? Haven't seen my dr. yet - still another week. No blood tests have been done....
  5. Hi, Got biopsy results. But turned out he only submitted the colonoscopy biopsies. Result is chronic non-specific colitis (edematous stroma, with lyphocytes and plasma cells)... Any idea what this means? Nothing in terms of celiac??? We have not done any blood tests. Don't know if they are even available here... ... and today am itching...
  6. Hi, Would just like to share. Just got back from a trip to Malaysia. On the plane had a gluten-free meal ordered - it was actually really nice. Got it and the hostess, smiled and went to put bread on my tray! Good thing everything was wrapped. My boss has been fabulous. He actually told our client (we eat out a lot when we travel) that I was...
  7. Hi Nita, As this has just developed after a cruise is it possible you picked up a bug, a parasite, or something? That can throw your system out. Sugar also tends to throw me out and worsen symptoms (and I crash energy wise) - unless I am having it and exercising at the same time (I am a try-athlete. ) Sally
  8. Thanks everyone. Your input is really useful. Will give away the oats... Actually, I didn't realise that itching was an issue, until I saw this forum a week ago, and went for the past week without being as itchy as usual.. though today am still VERY itchy and scratching ... Have been extra itchy for the past months - I just put it down to pollution...
  9. Hi - After one week of gluten free (I got some soya sauce one day which did have an itch response)... I ate a brownie today.... kind of accidentally... I usually have a brownie at this coffee place I go to... asked for one and was two bites down before I remembered I shouldn't have this... then considered what the heck!!!! And finished it... Thought...
  10. Hi, I am not an expert, but it sound like what you are eating is pretty low calorie. Have you tried counting calories to see how much you are actually getting? You definitely need up to 2000 calories a day, and possibly more more because you need to gain weight. The renal diet will keep you low protein, but you need to get enough to prevent muscle...
  11. Hi - I have been gluten free (well nearly, I think I accidentally got some traces).. for one week. This week my weight has dropped by 5 lbs! And I have been eating! That NEVER happens to me (I am also hypothyroid and PCOS)... I hope it is not just water... let's see.. I am not obese, but can easily stand to lose 20 - 30 lbs. Fingers Crossed: Sally
  12. Hi, I've really found that exercising help with my sleeping - before I got into exercise I also had problems sleeping, now it is much better as far as sleeping at night goes (mind and body are both tired)...... also maybe you have to retrain yourself to sleep at the time you want, very consistent night-time routines, environment etc.. It may take some...
  13. Hi, Googled celiac. This site came up. Sally
  14. Hahaha!!! This thread is funny enough that I read every post - though it's so long. - When your nickname is "La Cubeta" "The Toilet" - Whenever you exit a room quickly your friends smirk and say, don't worry she's just going to the rest room. - When you actually go to use public toilets in your office building rather than using the toilets in you...
  15. Hi All, I am waiting for an "official" diagnosis. In the meantime, I have been snooping around my family. We are not physically close (I live in Philippines, they live in Australia) and it seems we don't talk about medical stuff (my mum only told us the day she was being admitted to the hospital that she was having a hysterectomy - we were really mad...
  16. Hi, I just started gluten free this week and my doctor put me on omeprazole (proton pump inhibitor) for the next month for reflux/hyperacidity. I currently have NO reflux symptoms. This is really good (and probably a result of diet) because previously I was on omeprazole and IT DIDN'T HELP. I think it would take some time for the reflux to recover...
  17. Hi, I felt much better from the second day.... am only up to Day 6 now. Had chicken with some soy sauce last night (soy sauce has Wheat!) because I was so hungry and that's what was in my fridge. I was itching like crazy afterwards... still itching today, but improving - tummy seems reasonable... touch wood! Lesson learned! Better to go hungry...
  18. Hi Elaine, welcome to this forum. I am also new here and the people are great. You don't need to be medically diagnosed to have celiac (I think I read that there is a 30% false negative rate). This means that even if you have celiac, it won't necessarily be detected on the tests (and maybe better from an insurance view point). All you need is a positive...
  19. Hi, Just new here. But an idea.... you could use rice noodles. I was looking around today when considering lunch and thought Thai would be good. They should be fine? Just so long as they/you cook your noodles in fresh water to avoid cross-contamination. Vermicelli, Bihon, Rice Noodles, Thai Noodles.... Another good carb would be bananas. Am in...
  20. Hi, That's exciting training for IM. I have doing triathlon for a few years, but no IM yet. Was planning to do IM next year February, but currently suffering bad plantar fascitis, so might have to pull out... Have only just started gluten free (still waiting for biopsy resutls), but feeling much better. I REALLY hope that this is going to help...
  21. Good Morning. Have been trying gluten free for the past 5 days. So far it is brilliant! Tummy is much happier and though I am still feeling really tired, also no nausea. Am also on acid blockers now (have 1 month prescription), so that would be helping with the reflux and hyperacidity. Is it usual to have such a rapid response? This seems...
  22. Hi Donna, Itchiness could be caused by the mangoes. Some people get terribly allergic to them. My mom is one. I fortunately am ok with them. I grew up in a mango growing district. During school vacation I worked picking and packing mangos. A lot of workers had to quit after a couple of weeks due to really bad reactions even from just coming into...
  23. Hi All, Just got back from the endoscopy and colonoscopy - all without sedation. The endoscopy was ok, other than the very unpleasant sensation of having a hard tube down my throat. At least I don't have a strong gag reflex. The colonoscopy was VERY uncomfortable... I think this was mainly due to the air that they put in to expand everything......
  24. Hi, Come to Philippines! I am having endoscopy and colonoscopy tomorrow and the whole thing, including biopsies is going to cost about $500. Mind you, I have to pay for all of that myself. My insurance only covers accident or hospitalisation. The money you save on the tests, you could have a holiday. Gluten free eating is probably easier here...
