That is a very good idea. I remember right after my diagnosis, a little girlscout came knocking on my door to sell cookies. It broke my heart to turn her away! "Sorry sweetie, I can't eat your cookies"
Gluten Free Girl Scout cookies would be awesome!
-Jessica
It is so funny that you would post this today. Just yesterday, I had an "oh, girl scout cookies" realization of something I would miss. Since going gluten-free a month ago, I have realized that I don't have to give up anything...to the point that I'm currently indulging myself a little more than before! But occasionally I'll think of something irreplaceable, and girl scout cookies was yesterday's.Even just one variety would be great, and such a great way to be more inclusive for kiddos like your daughter! I'll write, and hope for the best!

I ran across the top secret site a few weeks ago. I was so excited. They have a big mac sauce on there. I made it then made myself a tasty big mac minus the bun. It was AWESOME!! It's a fun site that we can use to make some of the things we really miss. Thanks for bringing it up.

I put it in meatloaf ,meatballs, cookies, and things sometimes. I have also used it ontop of apple crisp. I have also eaten it as a hot cereal with a little butter and sugar. I don't think it is bad and it hasn't made me sick at all. By the way, I used the flakes.
-Jessica
I really dont care for quinoa (tried it a long time ago pre-gluten-free) but thought I'd give it another chance. I ate it for breakfast last Thursday and have been REALLY messed up ever since. I have every symptom of a glutening but I know it wasnt contaminated. My doctor told me to avoid both quinoa and amaranth because even though they are gluten-free they are too similar structurally to gluten and therefore some people react....same with soy protein isolate (whatever that is). I didnt really believe him since 9 out of 10 websites say they are safe...sooo I went ahead and ate quinoa. Now I am still sick.I asked my doctor about this and he said this is why he told me not to eat it....because some people DO react to it. He said while some of his patients do fine with it...others have gluten reactions from it. I'm confused about this. I knew even the purest of oats could cause trouble for some but quinoa???
Did anyone else have a gluten reaction from quinoa?
P.S. I'm not at all sad about giving up quinoa...cuz its gross....but just wanna know if it could cause that reaction.

This is an email from my celiac support group here on Long Island. I thought you might all like to see this too:Hi Everyone,
Please read the following - it concerns and affects all of us. This was originally posted on Delphiforums:
"I bought a book the other day, "Talk to the Hand" by Lynne Truss, She's the lady who also wrote "Eats, Shoots & Leaves". I bought it because it looked as though it might be quite funny.
>Anyway I got as far as page 5, where she is writing about pet hates - people who chat in the cinema; young people who walk four abreast on the pavement etc. - and she goes on to write -
>
" I now can't abide many, many things, and am actually always on the
>lookout for more things to find completely unacceptable. Whenever I hear of
>someone being 'gluten intolerant' or 'lactose intolerant', for example, I feel
>I've been missing out. I want to be gluten intolerant too. I mean, how much
>longer do we have to put up with that gluten crap?"
>
I was really irritated by that remark and just put the book away. I now have no desire whatsoever to carry on reading it.

The last few years I have asked for a birthday pie instead of a cake. My mom makes the best pies!! We use the gluten free pantry's pie crust mix and then I request either butterscotch or lemon for the filling (recipe in the better homes and gardens cookbook). SOooooo good!! Much better than a cake

Pepto bismol products often turn the tounge and feces black. Ask him if he has taken any pepto. Hope that helps.

You can do a search for food diary.
When you are keeping one you need to write down every single thing that goes into your mouth.
Medicines
Food and drink and how much
candy and chewing gum
toothpastes
anything that passes through your lips should go down on paper. Then I always write how I am feeling so that I can look back and maybe pinpoint something. Do this for a while and hopefully you will pick out a pattern in your eating or find a hidden source of gluten. Good Luck!! Feel free to post the list here if you are needing some help picking out the culprit. People are more than willing to go through the list for you.

I postal mailed in an order a couple of weeks before christmas and STILL have not recieved it. Last week I finally got a call from this woman that I could hardly understand on my answering machine. She said some of my items were back ordered and wanted to know if I would like them to go ahead and ship the rest of the things and send me a credit voucher for the remaining items. I tried calling her back several times with no luck. Finally I got annoyed and just sent a e-mail to the company and asked them to forward it on to this lady who called since I was getting no where. I got a nasty e-mail back from a lady saying that I would HAVE to speak with this one lady who called, but I couldn't reach. In my e-mail I had asked them to FORWARD the mail on to the chick soooo I wrote a "kind" note back and asked them again to forward it.
When I got home from work that night I had another message from the chick on the answering machine saying she was just going to ship out my order and send a credit voucher for the out of stock items. Then went in a checked my e-mail and had an e-mail saying she was holding my order she just got my forwarded email. I mailed her back and told her to hang onto my order until it was complete because I can't afford to pay so much for shipping just because they can't keep items in stock.
I have never had so much trouble with this company before. They need to get this figured out or they will be loosing customers soon. It is more than rediculous!!
-Jessica
I take it all back, what I said before!!!Upon closer inspection, my order was only half complete. One item was listed as included, but was in fact missing. The other items were just absent. This is my first order from them and what can I say, i was not impressed.
I called today, to find 2 items were backordered but she could send them this week. The others were backordered til who knows when, and she'd credit me. If I hadn't called I would have been charged the full amount and they never would have sent me the backorder items!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I placed my order days before they switched their system to this new half-baked idea of removing products from the site that are backordered. HUH? Who removes a product they sell???? I suggested they list the products, just not allow users to add the item to the cart. Duh!
So, if you have ordered recently, check your order!!!!!!!!!
And if you talk to them, tell them to change their website!!!!
Merika
new to gluten-free mail order and not loving it
wife to a web developer and probably thinking too much about site usability

are all jennie-o hot dogs safe, or only certain ones? the stores around here carry them and they are usually less expensive!christine

I just thought of another brand. Jennie O. They have turkey hot dogs. I know that I can find them at the local wal-mart here.

Oscar Mayer is a Kraft brand. They have hot dogs and many kinds of lunch meat products. All you have to do with kraft is read the labels. They clearly list ingredients. Hope you enjoy your hot dog. I made corndogs the other day with some oscar mayer hot dogs. They were tasty.
-Jessica
Hi again Everyone!
I know since I first started Posting, the subject of "gluten-free" (and additive free) HOT-DOGS has come up. Thanks to several of you on the Forum Board here, I have done some research into the dilemma of us "hot-dogs" lovers~ Many of my questions were answered in regards to eating out and wanting a hot-dog (without the BUN of course!) and which "dogs" were safe, etc; etc;
"nini" really gave me a good "tip" on her suggestion of APPLEGATE FARMS hot-dogs & some of the meat Products, etc; I had never heard of "Applegate Farms" before, & not even sure if they sell the brand around here in my area, so I went into their Web Site to have a look around. {http://www.applegatefarms.com} and this is a very GOOD Web Site! THANKS nini!!!!! They've even got some gluten-free "turkey" dogs that I was looking for!
Sorry to report tho nini, that they do NOT carry the Applegate Farms brand in our area here, & the closest place to get them is like 300-miles away in a bigger City!!!!!!!!
(figures!) Even our local grocery Stores here are NOT listed. (sniff!) But. From the Applegate Farms Web Site, a person can ORDER these Products directly from there. The price of these things are incased in gold tho... LOL
compared to the .77-cent hot dogs a person can get in the Super Markets.
I am trying to plan ahead for this Summer, with the "eating out" regarding Camping trips, picnics, BBQ's and Summer events such as this. As far as the Movie Theatre's, & various Concession Stands (vendors, etc;) and the type of meats & hot-dogs they serve, (including C-Stores & Gas Station Deli's, etc;) I think some of us may be out of luck in that Department. Darn! But again, it all depends upon which area a person lives in too.... this I am finding out quickly from the Forum Board here.
All in all, I may be stuck having to "order" Products from off the Internet... especially the hot-dog "gig," because even our Health Food Stores here, do NOT carry meat items, or this particular brand. I'm hoping to be able to resolve my hot-dog issue by the time hot Summer weather & "cook-outs" come around. I also hope nini's tip of introduction to Applegate Farms helps a few on the Board here as well.... it did ME!
THANKS AGAIN nini!

Does anyone know if Abreva contains gluten? The corner of my lip has a
gross crack, my pharmacist said it might be a coldsore. He said to
keep treating it how I am and if it doesn't get better in a few days
get the abreva. I e-mailed glaxcosmithkline, but of course their
response will take a while, just curious if anybody knows the answer
off hand. Thanks!

My dad used to always make us what he called potato cakes for breakfast. He would use leftover mashed potatoes, melt butter in the skillet, flatted a bunch of cold mashed potatoes into a hamburger shape and flour both sides (use gluten-free flour of course) then put the cake into the hot buttered skillet, brown both sides and enjoy!! Not terribly healthy, but very warm, filling and a great way to use leftovers!
-Jessica
having this board to come to is so helpful----you all have reminded me of things i was forgetting. potatoes, for instance. i live in idaho. my husband has done tires for the farmers for years. we get FREE potatoes. we do eat them alot, but can someone give me a good recipe for potato pancakes---i've never made them. we were from the south, so we grew up eating beans and rice. thanks for the reminders of things i should have already thought of.LOL!!Traditional mexican food (i'm not talking taco bell style here) uses a great deal of veggies and potaotes and such for stretchers. I learned to make traditional mexican food from a little hispanic lady when I was young. She used carrots, potatoes, and peas in her taco meat. She said that when you are poor and you have a large family to feed, that makes the food go farther! Since learning from her, I have always added the extra veggies. It doesn't only make it go farther, but it adds a little more healthyness
Even when making stir fries, I will use tons of rice under my stir fry and just make extra sauce in the stir fry. It seems to make it go quite a bit farther. Rice in meat-loaf is also something that I do. Since I don't put in the bread the rice makes it go a bit further.
Don't let leftovers go to waste. I saw a news blip today where the average american spends $5,000 on groceries in a year. $750 of that money is for groceries that get thrown away!! Get some ziploc containers and freeze small portions, label them with freezer tape. I do this and I have a frozen dinner to take to school for lunches. Much cheaper than buying something or buying a frozen amy's meal. Much healthier also.
-Jessica
. Stretching your food dollars with rice and potatoes is a great idea too. -
Top them with the junior mints, let that cool THEN frost them with milk chocolate icing. Pour yourself a huge glass of milk and Enjoy!! That is my favorite way to eat them. -Jessica
Here is my all-time favorite dessert idea for you----when your brownies come out of the oven, pour lots of Junior Mints on them and let it stand. Do not spread them around. It makes the most wonderful topping...that is if you like Junior Mints. Of course, Junior Mints are gluten-free. I have made this lots and they are very rich, but great. Barbara -
I had been bored with my food also. I recently got a forwarded e-mail from a friend. It was a recipe exchange. It sounded fun so I participated. It has been fun getting new recipes from people. I'll post the e-mail incase you want to try it out with some of your friends. It might just give you a new idea to get ya cookin again. !!

1) Person One blah@blah.com2) Person two blah@blah.com
Please email a recipe to the person whose name is listed in # 1
position.
Next, in another email, move my name to the # 1 position and put your
name in the number 2 position.
Only your name and mine should appear on this list when you send your
email.
Send the email to 8 friends.
It is just for fun. If you cannot do this within 5 days, please let me
know so it will be fair to others. You should receive at least 36
recipes. It will be fun to see where they come from.
The turnaround is fast because there are only 2 names on the list and it
is sent via email.

I have used Tinkyada and De Boles and did not pre-cook the noodles with either brand. I had never made lasagna until going gluten free. I always thought it sounded super hard to make. Turns out it is SO easy to make. I think it turned out great without the pre-cooking. I just made sure to use plenty of sauce to keep the lasagna moist. Enjoy!!
-Jessica
I was cooking so well. I had planned this meal for weeks. I had the cheese all mixed up as the lazagne was in the pot boling. When I went to lay the strips down they fell apart. I ended up with iddy biddy pieces of pasta in a big pot with all the ingedients thrown in like it was a mud pie. I stood there yelling at the the whole mess saying "I'm having lazagne toight regardless of what you say".
Question: how do you get the strips of lazagne to go from the pot easily into the dish?

Just thought I would post a response that I recieved from one of my congress people.
-Jessica
Dear Jessica,Thank you for contacting me regarding funding for the
National Institutes of Health (NIH). I appreciate hearing from you.
Between 1999 and 2003, Congress doubled funding for the
National Institutes of Health, increasing funding from $13.6 billion
in 1999 to $27.2 billion in 2003. The NIH has responded to
specific homeland security needs since 9/11 by focusing resources
on bio-defense research priorities. On December 14, 2005, the
House passed the conference report making FY06 appropriation
for the Departments of Labor, Health and Human Services, and
Education. On December 30, 2005, this became law. The
conference report provides increased funding for medical research
at NIH by $253 million, bringing total funding to $28.6 billion.
Included in the NIH budget is $100 million for the Global Fund to
Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria, as well as funding to
combat influenza and potential pandemics abroad and at home.
It is important that the NIH budget continues to fund
important life-saving research. Please feel free to contact me again
with comments or concerns on matters that are important to you.
God Bless You,
Jim Ryun

I never trust something that someone else has made up. I may use a list as a reference to get me started in the right direction. However I always go ahead and call the company on my own or check their website to double check the gluten free status. People are well meaning with lists, and lists are great, but you are the only person who is responsible for your health. You have to be ontop of it.
-Jessica
Anybody else had this experience? (Seems like it from browsing through posts!) I wondering how far you really can trust all those lists of gluten-free food - whatever the source (message boards, manufacturers, etc etc). I understand the cross contamination issues, hidden sources, ever-changing ingredients. But I swear I've gotten glutened from (by?) several products that're supposed to be fine. Two biggies lately have been Newman's Ranch dressing (really bad) and Sargento Parmesan/Romano grated cheese. I'm also suspicious of some of the Boar's Head meats & cheeses. TCBY frozen yogurt.I guess the smartest thing is just to trust your own body, but it gets expensive trying things you have to throw out - and worse, it's pretty much impossible to heal if you keep getting ambushed by so called gluten-free products. (Sorry for the rant. Feeling icky today.) But thanks for any clues you can provide!

In case you missed this:National Institute of Health Cuts May Decrease Celiac Disease Funding
-
Sorry you feel that way. It's quite a shame.
-Jessica
It will take as much cutting as would lower it too a point below which I believe research of that priority should be funded at. Yes, I am saying that, to me, it IS ok to cut funding in this area because of the big-picture of economic issues going on in the country. I do not see this, for me, as being the time or place to stand up and say "hold it". ANWR, I would have been willing to do so for, even in the context of the bill it had been reproachably attached to. You also assume that I haven't written in to suggest what is important to me. I can do that without saying "vote yes or no on bill X".How much national defense spending are you willing to put on hold because of celiac disease research? (I do not say this to be trite, or as a "comeback", but what concerns me is the scope issue here. I could see suggesting that NIH funding be separated from defense allocations, so that they can be more fairly evaluated separately, but the actual breakdown of NIH funding, except at a very high level, isn't covered in this bill at all. It would be more efficient to write to the NIH urging them to allocate the money they are given in ways that support celiac research. That would, of course, mean reducing research somewhere else - it's always a give and take.)
