  1. Have you looked at the Apr 2004 study in Digestive Diseases and Sciences? Their study suggests the blood work is not as sensitive as initially thought.
  2. More food for thought/questions 1. Antigens need not be pathogens. Example, type IV hypersensitivity reactions such as bee stings or poison ivy in which the antigen is bee venom or poison ivy oil and it is the same substance that your body reacts to the second time. 2. How do you then explain seronegative patients with positive biopsies that respond...
  3. Ravenwoodglass Sorry for what you have gone through. I know what you mean about most people that you know did not have the honour to know your brother. It is very comforting to talk to someone that knew your loved one, and as time goes by, there seem to be fewer and fewer people. My mother died of an unknown liver disease 25 yers ago when I was 11 years...
  4. Hi everyone I get the celiac newsletter online as a result of registering for this site. I think it was in the one from May 9 that summarizes the rate of false negatives from a study in the April 2004 Journal of digestives diseases and sciences.. It differentiates between total villus atrophy and partial atrophy. I can't remember exactly, but for the...
  5. I wonder if that's what I had that for 20-25 years, just didn't know there was a name for it. I just said that I had weird skin. I could write my name on my forearm and it would swell up. Usually gone in 30 min though. Haven't had it much since gluten free.
  6. Good for you to be looking at this as a possibility. I wish I had thought of it at 22! I'm 36 and had those issues since being a teenager. I wouldnot go out without alkaseltzer in my purse. I had it in every desk drawer in work, in the glove compartment etc... If you are lucky enough to have identified your problem you will have the key to a healthier...
  7. ok, I don't know how to do the quote thing and don't have time to figure it out, but for 2kids4me: Your right, it would be better to say that in type I, the ability of the pancreas to make insulin is destroyed via the destruction of the islets.
  8. true ehnough! I suspect that there are different types of type II. One being insidious and weight related and the other being like what you had experienced, ie triggered by something with more of an acute onset. That is to say without the acute and total destruction of the pancreas but with very high sugars at the start. But like you say, we just haven...
  9. I think we need to differentiate between type I diabetes and type II. My understanding is that it is type I (junvenille onset, acute onset, requiring insulin as the only means of treatment as the pancreas is destroyed by the autoimmune process) that is linked to celiac. The type II (adult onset comes more from the peripheral tissues being resistant to the...
  10. Hi Everyone I am wondering if our thought processes may be backward. I am thinking about all of the related conditions and wondering if celiac causes related condidtions instead of being just associated with them. There would have to be a wide spectrum of individual response to account for the wide variety of assoicated condidtions. But what if the gluten...
  11. You ask some very good questions, the most important is why is this not tested for more frequently? I think most doctors are still practicing in the 1950's with their knowledge of this. And we tend to believe them, trusting that they know everything. We know our bodies better than anyone and there comes a time when you have to learn to listen to them,...
  12. Hi there Pick up "taking charge of your fertility" I believe the author is Toni Weschler. This will help you figure out your cycles.
  13. Hi there and welcome I think the advice that everyone will give is that you cannot get any results from cutting down on gluten. You must not eat any which includes extensive label reading for hidden wheat products in any processed food. I've been on a steep learning curve for 5 months. I have found that gluten free diet has made a big difference in...
  14. Thank you both for your replies. I just found out today that I have moderate to severe endometriosis. So chances of pregnancy are pretty well zippo. I thought I was having a lap with laser treatment, but the surgeon said that it was quite advanced and that he would have had to seriously damage the ovary with the endometrioma. So he opted to tell me I...
  15. Oh, and one more thing. Lisa, pick up and read the book "taking charge of your fertility". It explains more about your cycle than you will every be able to learn from your doctor.
  16. Yes. I have an idea that the inflammatory substances from celiac in the intestine influence inflammation in the uterus and vice versa. I have had 2 gluten free cycles and noticed an improvement in the monthly flow and pain. Unfortunately I figured out the gluten thing too late and now have stage III endometriosis (just found out today). My hope now is...
  17. Hi everyone Just had a lap and dye test yesterday. Wasn't too bad at all. I know that there was a cyst on one ovary for sure and the rest I'll find out at my follow up visit in 5 days. Just wondering who has had experience with this, ie did the endo return? Were you able to get pregnant? I'm 36 and have never had a baby and am beginning to think I'm...
  18. Hi and welcome to both of you. Isn't it great to feel better? In answer to the question about are there many people who don't get a diagnosis but rather self-diagnose on a positive response to diet, there was an interesting poll done on this site that asked how many of the members of this site had a diagnosis based on a positive medical test, eg blood...
  19. Yes, I recall feeling sick after eating hotdogs. Bacon can do the same. Now if I eat bacon, I limit myself to 2 slices. I also remember waking up in the night to be sick after a rich meal at a restaurant, fettucini alfredo I think. But yes, high fat foods have been hard to digest.
  20. One other condition linked to gluten that comes to mind when re-reading your post is ulcerative colitis. Do you know where the ulcers were with you dad, eg, stomach, small or large intestine?
  21. Hi I have a very similar medical mystery to solve. My mother died in 1982 at 42 years old from a liver condition, undiagnosed. She was a nurse and began having trouble in the mid 1960's, got better for a while. She had 3 children, and then one of my earliest memories is her eyes turning yellow. She had ulcers and this progressive liver condition. ...
  22. Hi there I grew up thinking that my mother died of hepatitis contracted at work as a nurse. I now question whether it was pbc and unrecognized celiac. There was a story about a needlestick injury from a patient, but when I ask the only person that knew her at the time left alive, my aunt, she does not remember a specific incident, but conjecture that maybe...
  23. Hi There Elye, yes I agree entirely with you. When I was a student in biology in the early 90's, there was research that showed that many tumors had estrogen receptor sites. I thought it was a bad idea to use the pill, but did anyway for 7 years and have used it to control ovarian cysts, but I have remained convinced for years that there is a link to breast...
  24. Hi There For me this whole discussing is quite ironic...here's why...was/am Catholic but cannot take communion because I divorced my first spouse for reasons of his infidelity. I remarried without an annulment. Life has never been happier. Since I have applied for one and since I have gone gluten free...hmm...
  25. Hi There Just went off the pill a month ago. Had heavy and very painful cycles, was anemic and suspect endometriosis. I went on the pill last fall to control the nearly constant spotting from the endometrioma. Ihave a gyn apt coming up in March. Went gluten free in Nov and went off the pill 1 January. First cycle was heavier than on the pill as expected...
