ARCHIVED Grrrrrrrrrrrr
VioletBlue posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I went to the trouble to request that the local organic store order some Solea Potato Chips. Not only are they gluten free, they were supposed to be made with olive oil which means they were supposed to be sunflower oil free. I'm allergic to sunflower oil. I looked them up on their website. They list only olive oil in their ingredients on their website... -
ARCHIVED Glutenous Rice
VioletBlue replied to up-late's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Glutenous Rice is another name for Sushi rice, Short Grain White Rice or Sweet White rice or vice versa. It's stickier than longer grain rice, and shorter so it's perfect for Sushi. You can also find Glutenous Rice Flour aka Sweet Rice Flour, which is used to make Mochi. Violet -
ARCHIVED When Does It Ever End?
VioletBlue replied to Sarah8793's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Rice AND water? I think you're being overly optomistic there I don't know when it ends. I don't appear to have found that magic place either. I have no words of wisdom. But I understand your frustrations. Violet -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Gardening
VioletBlue replied to pswiderski's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
*shudder* The year before I was diagnosed I bought a bale of hay to grow potatoes in. Long story, but it's actually a really neat way to grow them. Anyway, that fall after I harvested the potatoes I broke the bale down and spread it over the front and back garden to protect the wintering over herbs and bulbs and the roses. I was diagnosed that December... -
Here is an excellent site that rates dog foods by quality: Open Original Shared Link It's no oincidence that the highest rated foods are all grain free. I feed EVO red meat dried and Evangers pure canned meat to the dog. The cats get Evangers Holistic Pheasant. Yes, the animals eat better than I do most days. I also found a great dog treat from Solid...

ARCHIVED Just Diagnosec- Still In Denial And Depression Period!
VioletBlue replied to sharps45's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I was diagnosed last December. There are still days now when it gets to me. I said something obscene to the TV last night when a commercial came on. It was one of those burger place commercials that shows the fluffy bun. This one claimed their whatever was healthier. Yeah, right. I hate those commercials. Hate pizza commercials too, LOL. But overall... -
ARCHIVED Asthma? Yeast? Hot Flashes? Connected To Celiac?
VioletBlue replied to poet925's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I was diagnosed with chronic bronchitis about seven years ago. It was with me almost constantly. The mornings were the worst for the coughing. And when I'd have a major coughing fit my temperature would go up suddenly and drastically. About two years ago I started having hot flashes. My period became extremely irregular and unpredictable and the doctor... -
ARCHIVED Giving Blood And Celiac Disease
VioletBlue replied to missnbagels's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I would agree that there wouldn't seem to be any reason why a Celiac couldn't donate blood. The only thought I have otherwise is whether or not that person should donate if their iron levels aren't as high as they should be as a result of anemia. I could see where it might be a concern for the donor's health as opposed to the recipient. -
ARCHIVED How Do You Know If You Are Healing?
VioletBlue replied to goldyjlox's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I think the food issues have to do with where you were when you were diagnosed. I was always hungry and I had gained significant weight in the years prior to diagnosis. Now hunger is no longer the constant issue it once was, and even when I am hungry it no longer has the urgent do or die attitude to it that used to exist. So I have lost weight since... -
ARCHIVED If Your Glutening Symptoms Are Depression And Rage?
VioletBlue replied to VioletBlue's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Whew. Yes, it's nice to know you're not alone, wow, thank you. I'm not even sure depression or rage or anger accurately describe it. The obsessive thinking is definitely part of it. The timing was what has made this last accidental glutening so bad. I have four wonderful aunts on my fathers side, all in their seventies and eighties. One of them... -
ARCHIVED If Your Glutening Symptoms Are Depression And Rage?
VioletBlue posted a topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
The most pronounced effect on me when I'm accidentally glutened is depression and anger. It's overwhelming and life altering. Fortunately I've come to realize it for what it is and I simply wait it out. It usually takes about five days for it to come and go. There are other milder symptoms like indigestion and acid reflux and back pain, but they're really... -
ARCHIVED Update: Just Wanted To Give People A Heads Up To Get Tested!
VioletBlue replied to a topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I'm still trying to figure out why it would matter if I were allergic to wheat in addition to being Celiac? Isn't it a moot point once you're diagnosed with Celiac Disease? Celiac diagnosis means end of wheat consumption, end of gluten consumption. End of problem. -
ARCHIVED Does Anyone Want To Witness Me Being Pummelled?
VioletBlue replied to Canadian Karen's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I'm sorry you got roughed up. I find it odd that people are so dismissive, particularly if there's a chance diet could help. What does it hurt to try every avenue if your child's future hangs in the balance? I believe that a reaction to Mercury could have something to do with Celiacs in some people, if not other auto immune issues, and I wouldn... -
ARCHIVED gluten-free Corn Tortilla Bread
VioletBlue replied to LoriC's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
La Tortilla Factory makes a Teff tortilla which I've asked the local organic store to track down for me. Teff is a gluten free grain. The same company also makes an organic corn tortilla. There is also a rice tortilla out there, I don't remember who makes it, but for me it's a little like rolling up cardboard. violet -
ARCHIVED Salsa--
VioletBlue replied to nowheatnomilk's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I gotta tell you, I've sworn off McCormicks period. I now buy an organic line of herbs or I dry my own. What got me with McCormicks was when I read the label on the Garlic Powder I bought and it said made in China. McCormicks can claim that as far as they know the product is gluten free, and they may even test to make sure, but I no longer trust food products... -
"Gosh no, that would kill me." I like that. Straigh forward, to the point. I'll have to try that from now on. I appreciate all ideas. Thanks. It helps just to write it out and know someone else out there understands. Violet

Quitting isn't an option. This is a small town. I've probably got one of the highest paid jobs in the valley. I'd literally be looking at cutting my pay in half IF I could find a job anywhere else here. I can't make the mortgage and car payments on that. Not to mention most other employers don't offer health benefits. I'd have to move out of the valley...

I work for a very small company. The owner, his wife and me. We run the business out of a house that used to be their second home. When they moved up here full time they bought a big ranch and turned the second home into their office. So it's got a bathroom and kitchen and appliances. But the downside is my desk not far from the kitchen which is open...

ARCHIVED Looking For gluten-free Potato Ships Without Sunflower Oil
VioletBlue replied to VioletBlue's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I remember looking at Cape Cod in Vons, but I didn't buy it either because the label listened a mix of oils, not just canola oil, or because it had a cross contamination warning on it. The health food store here doesn't stock anything I can eat. I'll see if they have a distributor for Solea. Thanks. Sunflower oil or seed makes me itch something terrible... -
Having come to recently realize that I'm terribly allergic to sunflower in any form and any amount, I'm rather frustrated. I can't eat corn or tortilla chips because I'm allergic to corn. Now it seems I can't eat anything else. I've hit every store in town and all the chips I could eat have sunflower oil to some degree in them. When the hell did sunflower...

ARCHIVED Does Anyone Get The Night Sweats?
VioletBlue replied to Janeti's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I only get them now if I've been accidentally glutened. And oddly enough, since someone mentioned hormones, all the other signs of menopause have lessened significantly since going gluten free. -
ARCHIVED Waking Up Every Hour To Pee
VioletBlue replied to wilbragirl's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I had always read that two of the primary causes of nighttime muscles cramps are dehydration and not enough calcium. Judging by how much some of us go at night dehydration makes sense, LOL. And I wonder how many people here who experience leg cramps are also lactose intolerant so they're not drinking milk or eating chesse? It seems that as long as I faithfully... -
I just happened to catch it on ABC this evening as I was eating my gluten free pizza dinner. What a wonderful segment and what a beautiful woman. The passion and determination she's brought to her sons battle with Autism is so wonderful to see. Among other thing she has her son on a gluten and casein free diet which she mentions in the segment. It would...

ARCHIVED How To Deal With Meals Within A New Dating Situation
VioletBlue replied to bigapplekathleen's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have done a Spanish Rice with shrimp as the only "meat". Or the old easy stand by, green salad with large prawns on top. Grilled prawns on top a bed of buttered herbed rice. Okay, I love shrimp, can you tell. I also love making sushi. Hey, you could get yourself a how too book and learn how to make sushi together! Violet
