Well that sucks! Safeway owns Vons if I remember right. The local Vons does not carry Lundberg. I'm one of those that reacts to Quaker rice cake products. The local organic store carries only one flavor of the Lundberg. So it's that or nothing around here.

ARCHIVED Would You Be Among The First To Give It A Try?
VioletBlue replied to Molecular Dude's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
No, never, not worth it. How many drugs were deemed safe only to be pulled after millions of people took them? How many people have died, how many lawsuits have there been over approved medications that killed and maimed people? The pharmaceutical industry has repeatedly spun their own trials to get approval for drugs that wound up killing people. I... -
ARCHIVED Yummy Pizza Toppings
VioletBlue replied to imsohungry's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Hmmm, tomato sauce, garlic, sliced tomatoes, artichoke hearts and gobs of warm soft goat cheese. I learned that one from an italian restaurant on Wilshire Blvd. -
ARCHIVED I Miss My Thai Food!
VioletBlue replied to imsohungry's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I went to the trouble awhile back to order rice papers from Amazon. The shipping is more than the papers. Then of course after that I discovered that my local Vons carries the exact same brand in the organic section next to the tofu and bean sprouts -
I take a NatureMade D supplement that is gluten free. There are other makers like Natrol and NOW who's supplements are gluten free. There are a couple different kinds of D supplements. There is some research that says some absorb better than others. The best source of D I've been told is sunshine. The body manufactures D as a result of exposure to sunlight...

There are other people here with different types and levels of kindey damage. I've participated in a couple threads here on the subject. Perhaps if you posted under related disorders with a heading about Kidney disease you could flush some of them out. I have something called Thin Basement Membrane Disease which is a benign condition that allows protein...

ARCHIVED How Common Is Self-diagnosis?
VioletBlue replied to Molecular Dude's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I think it's pretty common. I also depends on how you classfy self diagnosis. I had done an elimination diet and found a problem with wheat. I read up on wheat allergies and came accross Celiac Disease. A huge light bulb went on over my head. I was what I would now call gluten light for about a month before I took the blood test and the antibody numbers... -
ARCHIVED Finally, Decent Waffles!
VioletBlue replied to imsohungry's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I love the lifestream waffels. I was amazed to find them in the freezer section at Vons of all places. I like their texture and taste better than Vans. No more going to the organic store for waffles, LOL. -
ARCHIVED Lasagna Noodles
VioletBlue replied to celiac-mommy's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I used the De Boles no cook noodles to make lasagna for the first time this weekend. It turned out rather well. I'm very happy with the product, and 45 minutes worked perfectly. The noodles had a nice texture. I was kind of dreading it because the other types of rice noodles I've used tend to have a toughness to them if not well cooked. But this was... -
ARCHIVED Period Loss
VioletBlue replied to Bananna's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I have had fluctuations in my period for the last couple years. Honestly, at 44 I assumed I was entering Menopause and that was the cause. After all I was having hot flashes and mood swings etc etc. I went to see the doctor eventually and found out how low my iron was and one thing led to another which lead to Celiac Disease. Now a year or so later... -
ARCHIVED Hunger Pains
VioletBlue replied to holdthegluten's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I am the same way. I suffered from hypoglycemia prior to diagnosis. That was what brought on the shakes for me. I have read that it is somewhat common in untreated Celiacs. I also had days where I was always hungry, and when hunger pangs would hit it was such an urgent need I couldn't do much of anything else until I ate. Now when I actually feel hunger... -
ARCHIVED Have A Few Questions:
VioletBlue replied to Belinda Meeker's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I know from experience that some of the Aussie line contains gluten. I've used Pantene products without any problem. Violet -
ARCHIVED Cooking Oils
VioletBlue replied to mak07's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Rapeseed is very closely related to Canola seeds. Biologically speaking they're kind of fraternal twins. I would think if you could tolerate Canola oil you could handle Rapeseed oil. Likewise, if you can't tolerate Canola oil, Rapeseed oil would be a bad choice. Violet -
I wonder how they treat their fries? Some places drench them in a solution to preserve them and keep them from going brown between the time they're cut and the time they're cooked. Those solutions can contain high levels of sulfites which bother some people. Violet

ARCHIVED I May Have To Buy An Rv To Cope With This Condition
VioletBlue replied to weathertopmama's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Ugh. I'm sorry you wound up getting glutened after all that work. You can rent an RV. It's somewhat expensive, but probably on par with a hotel room for a half dozen people. And usually dealers who rent RV's have several options from small van conversions and pop ups to giant RV's with slide outs. You might also google tailgating. I know there... -
ARCHIVED My Gluten Free Food List 1/10/08...please Add Yours
VioletBlue replied to Respira's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Great list. It might be easier to add to your list. I don't believe I saw See's Candy on your list. With the exception of some of their decorated specalties, their chocolates are now gluten free according to their customer service. I believe they're stores are just in the western US though? Bubbies Pickles, my very favorite pickle in the whole world... -
ARCHIVED Coffee/caffeine
VioletBlue replied to ricardo29's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I can only handle moderate amounts of caffeine. Before I was diagnosed I drank the fully leaded coffee without problem. Once I went gluten free the caffeine started to really bother me. It was no longer an energy boost so much as a manic moment. I drank mostly decaf for about nine months after that. Now days I can drink moderate amounts of caffeine and... -
ARCHIVED Where Do People Buy Their gluten-free Flours From?
VioletBlue replied to chlobo's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I either buy from Barry Farms through Amazon or at the local Organic store. I can't say enough good things about Barry Farms. I oder enough at once from Amazon to get free shipping. The local organic store is small and can only carry so much. I can count on them to have rice flour if I run out, but I don't see the point in buying little one pound bags... -
That is the best explanation of the feeling I've ever read. I can't explain what the difference is between feeling like that and not, but it's profound. That is how I feel when I've been seriously glutened. Everything takes on a significance that is unrealistic. The difference between how I think and feel about things when I'm on gluten and how I feel...

ARCHIVED At The Start Of A Long Road
VioletBlue replied to writerscramp's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi and welcome. I'm glad you're finding help and comfort here. They knew me well at Taco Bell and the local Chinese take out place. I've considered holding a wake for my former lifestyle. I may still do it. Violet -
I'm not the one to ask, LOL. I couldn't eat your chilli. Or indeed most chillis. The red wine red pepper and chilli powder would make me sick. Also it looks like black pepper is an issue for me They all give me horrible gas. Are you all right with peppers otherwise? Do you know how you react to red or green or hot peppers, do you use them very often...

ARCHIVED Red Bridge Beer
VioletBlue replied to francelajoie's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Oh and I was surprised by how good it tasted. I was prepared to grin and bear it if I had to, but it's actually very good -
ARCHIVED Red Bridge Beer
VioletBlue replied to francelajoie's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
One of the advantages to Redbridge I've discovered is that it's made by anheuser busch. While no store within an hours drive of me stocks it, I was able to ask a small local market if they could order me a case. It turns out not to be a problem. Just about every store that carries beer receives AB deliveries on a regular basis. If the driver doesn't have... -
ARCHIVED Need Some Food Suggestions
VioletBlue replied to jasonD2's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
So can you eat things like lettuce, radishes, cucumbers, peppers, tomatoes, celery? Salads are a good option if you're able to handle raw veggies. Add a simple oil and vinagar dressing with a few herbs or spices in it and you're set. You can also include boneless chicken stripes or shrimp in your salads. Or you can cut out the lettuce part all together... -
ARCHIVED Reversing Osteoporosis Without Fosamax
VioletBlue replied to frec's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
And there's the lovely thing about research. I've read research that says Vitamin D from a pill is virtually worthless because the body can't process it in that form. That piece of research claimed that the body gets only limited benefits from Vitamin D pills. But I don't accept that one piece of research as fact, nor do I base my life on it. Research...
